Of all the producers coming out of California, new and old, Carboniste may have the freshest perspective. Yes, they are making sparkling, but completely letting the warm California climate take the lead. There is no influence of Champagne, Prosecco, or Cava in sight. The project is run by Dan and Jacqueline Person, who after meeting at UC Davis, worked all over the world before reconvening on this project. While Dan does have his work for Schramberg under his belt, he insists on reimagining sparkling wine inspired by the California state of mind.

This Albariño’s story is actually very personal. The Gomes family has been farming the vineyard of the same name since the 19th century when they originally traveled over from Portugal. In their homeland, Albariño is grown near the coast, and it wouldn’t be completely wild for it to be drunk with octopus. The wine is fermented in tank with a small amount of dosage added.

Grosjean Freres, Valle d'Aosta Pinot Noir 2022

Variety: Pinot Noir

In the cool northern Italian region of the Valle d’Aosta, which lies nestled in the crevices of the Italian Alps dwells the family-owned vineyards of Grosjean Freres. The family would raise cattle, and during the summer grow grapes and chestnuts at the lower parts of the slopes. Though the history of this winemaking family long had roots in this region, a wider audience for the wines did not begin until Dauphin Grosjean was encouraged to show his wines at a local wine expo. Winemaking all of a sudden became a family affair, including Dauphin’s five sons. Vineyards were purchased and production increased.

This wine is 100% Pinot Noir, though the two lineages of the wine are from different countries, 70% of the vines are French and the rest are Swiss. The vineyards come from a high altitude slope of over 600 meters in elevation. The Pinot Noir ages partly in oak and partly in stainless steel.

Marcel Lapierre ‘Le Beaujolais’ 2022

Marcel Lapierre is a name that will live on as a legend in the region of Beaujolais. After taking over his father’s domain, life changed for Marcel when he met Jules Chavet, who has been deemed his spiritual godfather. Jules represented many things to Marcel in the winemaking world, but most notably, it was he who had spoken about natural wine during the 1950s when chemical fertilizers and pesticides began to appear. He wanted to keep the traditional ways of Beaujolais intact. Marcel Lapierre became the torch carrier of this return to natural winemaking, and additionally, the “Gang of Four”—a nickname given by Kermit Lynch to Marcel and local vignerons who carried out this mission. This return to old ways meant harvesting later, starting with old vines that naturally yield lower, and minimal doses of sulphur dioxide or none at all. Marcel Lapierre unfortunately passed in 2010; his son Mathieu carries on the legacy of his father.

Call it “mini Morgon” if you will, but this by no means a village level Beaujolais. The vines are all 50 to 80 years old coming from just outside the boundaries of Morgon. The fruit gets declassified while you still get the pleasure factor of Beaujolais by the Lapierre family.

Goyo Garcia Viadero has been working in Ribero Del Duero since before the establishment of the D.O., and his family has been working in viticulture for hundreds of years. Goyo’s own cellar dates to the Roman era and he claims acts are a prominent part of his winemaking process. The labyrinthine cellar built into limestone bedrock is vast, deep, and stays at a very cool temperature year-round. Goyo has chosen to reject additives, new oak, and intense extraction all characteristic of the region’s wines, instead opting for a fresh nimble fruit forward expression.

This bottle come from high elevation 40+ year old vines and is his only completely un-oaked wine.

The German winemaking icon Peter Keller does not readily offer praise. The young and upcoming winemaker Peter Leipold has proven to be a bit of an exception to this. “For me, Peter Leipold is on the way to becoming a young genius… He worked for two years here at our winery before leaving for Liger-Belair… What Peter does with Pinot and Silvaner in Franconia reminds me of what Julian Haart is doing in the Mosel… Peter’s wines touch my heart,” raved Keller. Aside from making beautiful rieslings, the young winemaker focuses on the varietal Silvaner, a rare yet culturally significant varietal few work with. Regardless of grape, Leipold's wines are pure, electric, mineral-driven, and entirely German in their precision. Be on the lookout for Leipold's wines, he's on the rise.

Denis Mortet, Rose de Bourgogne 'Colette' 2022

When it comes to iconic Burgundy producers, there are just a handful that not only make sought after bottles, but have the journey to complete the story. The story of Domaine Mortet follows three generations of established men, each with his own vision. Charles Mortet founded the domain in 1956 with just one hectare. When his son Denis took over, the domain had grown slowly to 4.5 hectares. Their focus was to grow over time, steadily taking on more vineyards. After the tragic death of Denis in 2006, young Arnaud brought forth a sense of energy and imagination. Incredibly, the changes that Arnaud has made have brought this Burgundy producer to a new status of quality due to his minimalist tendencies and organic forward practices.

It doesn't fresher than this for a Burgundy rose. All fruit comes from plots in Premier Cru & Grand Cru plots in Gevrey-Chambertin, quite an anomoly as Gevrey makes red wine. All fermentation takes place in steel. This wine is named for Arnaud's niece born in 2022. Just 250 cases produced!

Both Xavier & Dominque Vayron are the faces behind Chateau Bourgneuf, a property that resides in the village of Pomerol on the Right Bank of Bordeaux. Here the clay soils are perfect for Merlot with both power and finesse. After eight generations in the same family, they continue to make some of the best bottles in Pomerol. There daughter, Frederique, took the helm in 2008 where she brought a refreshing both an personal and contemporary approach to their winemaking. With her tenure, she was the first of the family to bring on a second wine.

Saisons de Bourgneuf is the second wine of the chateau incorporating just as touch of Cabernet Franc. This blend is intended to be an early drinking style and reveals the fleshy power that is Merlot.

Jean Dauvissat, Chablis Mont-Main Sourdelle 2022

There the name Dauvissat is a common one, though this domaine is unrelated to the others. What makes this domaine stand out is that its current winemaker is Fabien, Jean's grandson, is an up and coming producer just barely into his thirties. Believe it or not, there are still many who do not farm organically in the region of one of France's most iconic wine regions; Chablis. After taking over from his father, Fabien has converted farming to both organic and biodynamic. Aging is a slow and steady one with aging happening over 18 to 24 months making for a wine that is both honest and modern. The wines have just landed in Cincinnati over a year after Kevin enjoyed them in a bistro in Chablis.

This bottle is a blend of two vineyards - Mont-main and Sourdelle in the town of Beines. Fabien believes these vineyards have the same quality and uniqueness as those from Premier Cru sites.

Muriel Giudicelli, born to Corisican parents, spent much time summering on the island. Studying wine at university, when Muriel selected where she wanted to put down roots, Corsica seemed the natural place. Deciding to forgo traditional enology practices of the time, Muriel instead sought out experiences with small domaines all over France. It was during these stages that the dream of Domaine Giudicelli was born. Jumping at the opportunity to acquire 5 hectares of vines from a retiring vigneron in 1997, Muriel has been making exceptional Corsican wines since. The estate is now certified biodynamic.

Grown from vines averaging 25 years in age, the vineyard spans 10.5 hectares and includes soils of clay, limestone, granite, schist. The wine ages in stainless steel on the lees for 11 months before release.

Enfield Wine Company is the passion project of John Lockwood and his wife Amy Seese. Founded in 2010, the project is very young, but despite that has recently started to gain attention nationwide. These are truly some of our favorites from California. John only uses native yeast and the wine is never filtered or cold stabilized. The growers he works with changes from year to year while he continues his relationships with small growers from some of California’s most special heritage sites. His passion is contagious and his energy unwavering.

With only 83 cases made, this tiny production wine is as unusual as is it hard to come by. Seeing skin contact on grapes sourced from Rafael Vineyard's 1982 plantings in Oak Knoll, the wine is vibrantly complex.
