Agnes did not have this. What she does have is hard work and a belief in what she is doing. Agnes, year after year, makes elegant and delicate wines with a real sense of place. The wines drink exactly as they should for the level of designation and village they represent.

This Pinot Noir comes from the lieu dit site “Les Hoz” located in the Auxey-Duresses appellation. Vines are 20 to 60 years old. The younger vines undergo a little bit of whole cluster fermentation, while the older vines are completely destemmed. Ageing is done for one year in barrel, with 15% of it new, finishing with four months in stainless steel before bottling.

This wine is named for the two vineyards from which it hails in both Meursault and the town of Meloisey in the Haute Cote de Beaune. The wine is aged in 500 liter barrels before it is released.

Alain Graillot, Crozes-Hermitage 'La Guiraude' 2019

Every wine region in the world has its benchmark producers. These are the producers that year after year release top tier wines with a consistent voice that is evident in each bottle. These producers are an inspiration to younger producers throughout the world. Alain Graillot is a classic example, presiding over 50 acres of 30+ year-old vines in Crozes-Hermitage, just off the powerful hill of Hermitage in the Northern Rhone. Graillot has always focused on the pursuit of greatness. Quality comes first. He passed in 2022, though his voice lives on with both of his sons, Antoine and Maxime, who picked up their father's torch back in 2008.

From his wines, Alain would select certain barrels to create a limited label known as “La Guiraude,” which he considers his best. He has been a guiding light for quality that every neighboring producer aims to emulate.

Albert Boxler, Cremant d’Alsace 2019

When an estate is founded in 1673 you can hypothesize about the history that lives on in each bottle. This history plays a major role in farming because each new generation carries on techniques taught from their forefathers. With this being said, consider the region of Alsace switched its alliance multiple times between France and Germany during the World Wars. Many experts would consider the wines of Jean Boxler, the current owner and winemaker, to be some of the best in the world. For this reason, the small 5,200 case winery produces some of the most collectible items out of Alsace. The wines still bear to this day the same label designed by a Boxler cousin dating back to 1946.

This Cremant is among the best sparkling in this region. It is made into a very dry style and aged on its lees for 24-40 months imparting richness and concentration. The quality is on par with Champagne at a fraction of the price.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the ‘Gang of Four?’ It was a nickname lovingly bestowed to the most noteworthy winemakers of Cru Beaujolais—Jean Foillard, Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton. Enter Alex Foillard—son of Jean Foillard—who now runs his own show in the world of Beaujolais. His exposure to wine and all things Beaujolais came to him at a young age. He took on early interest, intent on carrying on his father’s trailblazing ways. While his father worked with vines in Fleurie and Morgon, Alex farms from both Brouilly and Côte-de-Brouilly. Beginning at just 24 years old, he has taken a page from his father’s finesse for winemaking, working organically and naturally.

Just south of the famed Cru of Morgon is the lesser known Cru of the Côte de Brouilly. The vines here are 30-60 years old. The rocky soils seem to marry the fruitiness of Beaujolais with the power of the wines from the northern Rhone, which actually aren’t that far south from here.

Patchwork gets its name from the multitude of vineyards it draws its fruit from. Many would call this the winery’s flagship bottle, blending both the clay and limestone soils that represent the area of Arbois. This is not an oxidized style, but closer to that of a Premier Cru level of Puligny Montrachet.

Vines are full of clay-limestone which makes for a wine full of good acidity and structure. It is fermented in stainless steel and then goes on to age for four months on the lees. Second fermentation begins, then the bottles age for 18 months before they’re disgorged and then released.

Winemaking, while still minimal, is an interesting approach of both the cremant and natural sparkling styles. Initially, the juice ages for three months on its lees. The wine is bottled to begin the initial fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The second fermentation is kick started with a bit of straw wine (raisin wine) that lasts nine months. These indiegnous yeasts will bring more complexity and richness. The wine ages for 13 months on the lees in bottle. While there is a bit of residual sugar, no sugar or sulphur is added.

Benjamin Leroux, Bourgogne Aligote 2022

Forging one’s own path is tough enough with a blank slate. Forging one’s own path in a place like Burgundy, with its rich family histories and formidable reputation is a Burgundian feat in itself, reminding us to recognize where you are and seeing potential. Not coming from a winemaking family, that is exactly what Benjamin Leroux has done with his domaine. Born and raised in Burgundy, he grew up running around his mother’s floral shop. It was there as a young boy that he by chance met wine geek extraordinaire Becky Wasserman, who was buying flowers at the time. This only strengthened his desire to become a vigneron in his home region.

True to his word he began his studies locally at age 15. Taking to it, his education continued abroad in New Zealand, Bordeaux and at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Louis Jadot in Beaune, and Comte Armand in Pommard, where he was named technical director and manager at the age of 24! He founded his own domaine and négoce in 2007 after fifteen years at Comte Armand.

The Leroux estate farms about 8 hectares, but draws from over 30 hectares total spanning the Côte from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin to produce these hidden gems. Leroux is a “small is beautiful” type of thinker. His reputation is that of prioritizing what he finds interesting about a parcel over its historical fame or popularity. He has discovered fantastic terroirs either long forgotten or undiscovered, a unique and rewarding approach for a domaine just establishing itself as a formidable entity in Burgundy viticulture.

Forging one’s own path in a place like Burgundy, with its rich family histories and formidable reputation is a Burgundian feat in itself, reminding us to recognize where you are and seeing potential. Not coming from a winemaking family, that is exactly what Benjamin Leroux has done with his domaine. Born and raised in Burgundy, he grew up running around his mother’s floral shop. It was there as a young boy that he by chance met wine geek extraordinaire Becky Wasserman, who was buying flowers at the time. This only strengthened his desire to become a vigneron in his home region.

True to his word he began his studies locally at age 15. Taking to it, his education continued abroad in New Zealand, Bordeaux and at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Louis Jadot in Beaune, and Comte Armand in Pommard, where he was named technical director and manager at the age of 24! He founded his own domaine and négoce in 2007 after fifteen years at Comte Armand.

The Leroux estate farms about 8 hectares, but draws from over 30 hectares total spanning the Côte from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin to produce these hidden gems. Leroux is a “small is beautiful” type of thinker. His reputation is that of prioritizing what he finds interesting about a parcel over its historical fame or popularity. He has discovered fantastic terroirs either long forgotten or undiscovered, a unique and rewarding approach for a domaine just establishing itself as a formidable entity in Burgundy viticulture.

Benoit Daridan took over the family winery in 2001 after many years of study and work experience around the world. As the seventh generation to take over the small 15 hectare farm, Benoit has worked tirelessly to protect and promote the family traditions of passion for the regions terror. The vineyard is perfectly positioned between arguably the Loire Valley’s most two most famous properties: Chateau de Cheverny and Chateau de Chambord. While most of the vineyard is made up of young vines, they do pride themselves on a tiny two hectare plot of 50 year old vines.

You would think this wine was from the region of Burgundy based on its blend and style, but it is a fresher, possibly softer version coming from similar soil types in the ancient Loire Valley. It is mostly Pinot Noir with a little Gamay added; a Loire version of the Burgundy Passetoutgrain.

The conversion to organics and biodynamics aside, his vineyard practice employs horses and aromatherapy, and to walk around the cellar you’ll find barrels painted purple and small Buddhas perched as if to watch over the room. It is easy to tell he takes great care in every step of what he does, in hopes, and execution, of finding balance not just in his winemaking, but also in life.

This is old vine Chardonnay planted way back in 1952. This is a more opulent style of Chardonnay than the other Grand Cru bottlings, which is really saying something because the wines undergo lengthy lees aging, giving this wine a profound texture and weight.

“Les Crayers” means the “big chalk,” openly referring to the hefty presence of chalk in the soil. This wine is aged for four years on the lees. No dosage, or sugar is added making this bone dry and pure. This is the first single vineyard that Marguet began to bottle.

A Prestige Champagne is the first of its kind to be vinified with natural methods and certified organically. The project is a collaboration of four great wine minds-- Benoit Maguet, Benoit Lahayem, Vincent Laval, and David Laclapart. The idea is to craft the highest quality wine using biodynamic methods in Champagne. The base wine spends two years aging on forest selection barrels before the second fermentation. The wine is released after nine years. When this bottle has been blind tasted next to top cru Champagnes including Salon, Krug, and others, it continually achieves the highest ratings blind. With less than 3000 bottles produced it can be hard to come by.
