Female run by Sophie Fourcade, Chateau Cote de Baleau is a beautiful property positioned on the right bank of Bordeaux in Saint-Emilion. The property was founded in 1643 with a long history of great families having ties to the land. The vineyards are planted to 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The soil is limestone and sand located not far from the famed estate La Gomeire. One of the most impressive things about Chateau Cote de Baleau is the age of the vines, which are over 40 years old; Bordeaux as a whole is still rebuilding much of its old vines.

The fruit undergoes thirty days in a tank where it macerates. The wine ages up to 18 months in oak, half of which is new, before it's released. This bottle could be drunk now with a little decanting, or cellared for several more years.

Meeting owner and winemaker Hervé Dubourdieu is almost like meeting a surgeon. Dressed to perfection and walking with confidence, his estate is located in the southern end of the famed Bordeaux wine region in Haut Barsac, famous for white wine, and more famous for dessert wine made from the noble mold, botrytis. I remember walking around the winery and feeling that if I put on a white glove I would not find a spec of dust, let alone dirt, anywhere in the winery. This cleanliness shows up in the wines. Always pristine and focused, the aromatics are fresh and the palate clean. The dessert wines produced here are what many of the estates in Barsac and neighboring village of Sauternes focus on. When a vineyard does not obtain the noble rot and the airflow is just too much to create the famous mold, it is still perfect to produce dry, fresh white wine blended with Sémillon, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc. No oak is used in the winemaking, and flavors of citrus and grass come through. Due to the river emptying into the Atlantic and the humid air blowing inland down into the vineyards, the wines are incredible with light seafood salads or simple preparations that highlight lemon.

From the same Bordeaux house that brought us Châteaux Peybonhomme. Even though Château Peybonhomme Les Tours began six generations ago in 1895, this generation begins with the union of two humans of different wine-related backgrounds. Jean-Luc Hubert descended from a long line of sailors who navigated the Gironde river utilizing “scow” boats to transport wine. Alternatively, Catherine came from a long line of winemakers, her great grandfather having acquired Peybonhomme in 1890. Both of their ancestors worked extensively with one another making and transporting wine, unbeknownst to them the union that would one day happen. The kids have grown and now assist in making beautiful, natural wines and following in their parents’ footsteps.

Steep gravel slopes are prime for planting Merlot, the number one contender in this blend. A bit of time in new oak marries fruit and wood tannins, and the in-bottle result is a harmony of terroir and tradition. The wine is an entry-level version of their Tete de Cuvee bottle.

La Gurgue, Margaux 2017

This historic château has changed hands and names, acquired vineyards, and evolved over the years. The estate has a close tie to the village of Margaux; one of its previous owners was, in fact, mayor of the town. Acquiring the title of mayor has its benefits in the wine world; even more accessible is sought after land; that’s just what was done. One such Camille Lenoir purchased a plot of land named “Curton,” one of the best plots of Margaux. The name of the château comes from a locality of the village. Today the estate is looked after by Claire Villars Lurton, who works diligently with her efforts of delicacy.

This bottle of Margaux is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petite Verdot coming from 30 year old vines clay and gravel-based soils. The wine sees oak for twelve months, 25% of which is new.

La Vaisinerie, Puisseguin Saint-Emilion Merlot 2018

Formerly part of Château de Puisseguin the property has existed since the XVII century. Since July 2019 Alain Moses has been the new owner. After being a wine broker for 20 years, Alain created TWINS, a wine merchant specialized in Fine Bordeaux Wines, now managed by his sons, Anthony and Sébastien. As an entrepreneur, Alain wanted a new challenge this adventure is what happens when you spend the better part of your adult life working in and around the Bordeaux trade and you finally retire you also know where the best terroir lies. Château La Vaisinerie is located on the hills of Puisseguin, at 6 miles from Saint-Emilion. The
Chateau produces Puisseguin Saint-Emilion red wines, with 91% of Merlot and 9% of Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vineyard is 35 years old. The appellation, Puisseguin-Saint-Emilion covers 730 ha. The clay and limestone soil, similar to Saint-Emilion, enables a good water supply for the vine, perfect in case of drought.

Laffitte Carcasset, Saint-Estephe Cru Bourgeois 2018

Laffitte Carcasset draws its name from two sources. Josef Lafitte was the attorney for the King of France, whose family owned the estate until 1838 when it changed hands. The name Carcasset comes from the name for the lieu-dit from which it was situated. Through the years, the chateau has changed hands and names a handful of times. In 2016, the estate was sold and now has a new owner as well as a new advisor. Hubert de Bouard, the new advisor, has increased the quality of the wines in a short period of time.

The average age of the vines are 30 years, composed of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and a bit of Cabernet Franc.

Leoville Las Cases, Saint Julien 2nd GCC 2001

This second growth, which qualified in the 1855 classification, is a serious wine among all the Bordeaux wines available. There are three Bordeaux Chateaux under the name of ‘Leoville.’ Leo means lions and refers to the power and structure of these wines from Saint Julien. The wines age gracefully in the cellar, even for an eternity if you let it. Leoville is located on the Left Bank of Bordeaux in the village of Saint Julien.

This 2001 only just left the winery in 2021 as it was held back as a library wine. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot lead the blend here.

Meyney, St Estephe 2018

Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot

Château Meyney is one of the oldest estates in the Médoc, the subregion on the left side of the Gironde estuary. The estate is a former convent with records dating back all the way back to 1662. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot are planted right up to the banks of the river, making for a serene landscape. The estate has changed hands many times leading to its current owner. CA Grands Crus, a subsidiary of the Groupe Crédit Agricole and owner of several esteemed Bordeaux houses, purchased Meyney in 2004. Today, the vines are looked after with exceptional care by the Technical Director for CA Grands Crus. Château Meyney is a single block of 74 hectares, all overlooking the Gironde estuary. The placement of the vines is important, as the estuary protects these vines from frost.

The vines are between 35 and 40 years old, although some of their older vines are closer to 100 years in age. The blend is representative of the Saint-Estephe style: driven by Cabernet Sauvinon and blended with Merlot and Petit Verdot. The oak ageing is done in 50% new, taking place over the course of 18 to 24 months, vintage depending. This bottle can be enjoyed now, or could cellar another ten years.

Denis Durantou is considered one of the rising stars of Bordeaux and never stops moving. From the same Bordeaux house that brought us Château La Grolet. Even though Château Peybonhomme Les Tours began six generations ago in 1895, this generation begins with the union of two humans of different wine-related backgrounds. Jean-Luc Hubert descended from a long line of sailors who navigated the Gironde river utilizing “scow” boats to transport wine. Alternatively, Catherine came from a long line of winemakers, her great grandfather having acquired Peybonhomme in 1890. Both of their ancestors worked extensively with one another making and transporting wine, unbeknownst to them the union that would one day happen. The kids have grown and now assist in making beautiful, natural wines and following in their parents’ footsteps.

Because of this “atypical” blend of Malbec and Cabernet Franc, the “L’Atypic”—pronounced “lah tee-peek”—is a less serious style of Bordeaux in a declassified Bordeaux bottling. This comes from the Right Bank of Bordeaux from the region of Blaye.

Peybohomme takes a traditional Bordeaux Blanc blend and creates a satisfying dry white with equal parts Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. 40% of the wine ferments in new barrels while the rest takes place in concrete. The ageing process takes place over six months while the winemaking process keeps in tune with the biodynamic calendar.

Chateau Pichon Longueville is one of the great Bordeaux houses which was part of the original 1855 classification, though the estate itself originated back during the late 17th century. Pichon was classified as a Second Growth during that time with its vineyards within the appellation of Pauillac, part of the Left Bank. With its historic past, the chateau has changed hands just twice. The first family of Pichon Baron owned this property for over 200 years. The property was divided at some point, becoming Pichon Longueville and Pichon Comtesse. This estate continues to be one of the most prestigious Bordeaux houses today.

Reserve de la Comtesse is the "second wine" of Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, which was originated in 1973 and sold the market. Today the wine represents 20%-50% of total production. Coming from the same vineyards and made in a manner that can be a bit more approachable younger, which does not change the fact that these wines can still age incredibly well. Paulliac is considered one of the most significant wine regions on earth, with three of the First Growth Bordeaux being situated here, the region has a lot of stature.

Poitevin, Medoc Cru Bourgeois 2019

Château Poitevin was founded in the 1950s by René Poitevin as a small family owned property of two hectares in the Médoc. He and his son after him would grow their vines and sell the resulting harvest to the local cooperatives. Guillaume represents the third generation of viticulture for the Poitevin family; changes began with him. After practical and theoretical training in Bordeaux, he changes the ways of the estate by the vinification of his own wines instead of selling. With a clear perspective of tradition and modernity, Guillaume makes several cuvees, Château Poitevin included. He is helped by his wife, Natacha, and a small dedicated team of winegrowers. In 2012, Château Poitevin won the Coupe des Crus Bourgeois; a reward awarded for twenty years of work.

The wine is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Verdot from gravel-dominated soils laced with sand and clay. The wine is then aged in oak for 14 months, 30% of which is new. This is a vin de garde, meant to cellar for another 10 to 15 years. The bottle is of incredible value!

Rauzan-Segla is still one of the most important chateaux in Bordeaux; as such, this property has 362 years of history behind it. Like other notable chateaux, Rauzan-Segla has had its fair share of connection with both royalty and the famed. The domaine is a property of Chanel and was well-loved by U.S. president Thomas Jefferson. The vineyard area covers 52 hectares in the village of Margaux, a village known for making wines with power and ageability.

This wine could easily be mistaken for a First Growth, though it was classified as a Second Growth during the 1855 Classification. This is one of the finest Bordeaux to be released in recent years. Many claim 2010 is one of the best, if not the best to come out of Chateau Rauzan.

Rieussec, Bordeaux Sec Blanc 2017

Chateau Rieussec is one of the most noteworthy châteaux in all of Bordeaux, hailing from the same great talents as Lafite Rothschild. The Rieussec winery and vineyard is located in the region of Graves (aka gravel) on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. In Graves is the appellation of Sauternes, famous for its honeyed, rich dessert wines, but Rieussec also makes an incredible Bordeaux Blanc Sec. The winery was begun in the 18th century under the Carmelite monks, who valued the vineyards' gravelly clay and sandy soil. During the great 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, Rieussec was ranked as a First Growth for its Sauternes and Barsac wines. Another turning point occurred in 1984 when Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) acquired the estate, implementing meticulous measures often described as “Draconian.”

This Bordeaux Blanc comes from the same vines as the Sauternes, though the main difference here is that the grapes are harvested much earlier before their potential exposure to noble rot, otherwise known as botrytis. The wine is always fermented in barrels in order to balance it and extend its ageability in the cellar.

Smith Haut Lafitte 'Les Hauts de Smith' Blanc 2019

The story of Château Smith Haut Lafitte began in the medieval 14th century when there was the first record of any deeds of the estate, vines included. As history goes, the estate changed hands quite a bit; a Scottish wine merchant purchased it in the mid-18th century and named it after himself. A gentleman by the name of Lodi acquired the estate later on—this same man was also the mayor of Bordeaux and a signer of the official 1855 classification. Fast forward to today; Florence and Daniel Cathiard fell in love with the estate, intending to continue its legacy of excellence. One daughter, Mathilde, and husband founded a company that utilizes the vine cuttings and grape seeds in a range of beauty care products. This epic history reinstates the legacy this chateau continues to carry on.

Traditionally, a Bordeaux Blanc is a blended wine, though “Les Hauts de Smith” is simply Sauvignon Blanc. This may be considered the winery’s entry level white, but the care and quality is just as great as that of their best. The aging process is lengthy as the wine spends one year on its lees in French oak barrels, half of which are new.

Yquem "Y" Bordeaux Blanc 2018

There are sweet wines from around the world, and then there are the cherished wines of Yquem. The famed estate has history dating back to 1593 and has exchanged hands a few times over history with the quality rising with each passing. The property is classified as a Premier Cru Superieur “Superior First Growth”, and was part of the official classification in 1855. There are 310 acres of vineyards planted in Sauternes with only 100 in production at any time. The chateau makes two wines: the Sauternes which is sweet, and ‘Y’ Bordeaux Blanc which is dry. Both wines undergo the same meticulous attention in the vineyard, harvesting and winemaking are completed rather differently. Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc are the foundation for both.

“Y” is a dry white wine made from both early harvested Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon that’s achieved the perfect ripeness. The wine was first made for the 1996 harvest, as there was a call for more wine that was fresh and crisp. The wine is now made in every vintage.
