Depending how you look at it, ‘A Vita can either be viewed as a lifetime or ‘from life.’ Either way you see it, this small winery is bringing a breath of fresh air to the most southerly region on the boot—Calabria. Dup Francesco and Laura de Franco farm in the DOC of Ciro, straddling the area between the Ionian sea and the Sila mountains. The area is known more so for its bulk wine, though ‘A Vita makes about 2000 cases in total. Their approach to farming and winemaking is minimal as they bring an overlooked region into the world spotlight.

‘Il Rosso’ blends the classic variety of Calabria, Gaglioppo, with the other red variety, Magliocco. Gaglioppo is not only an offspring to the Tuscan Sangiovese, but also a cousin to the Sicilian Nerello Mascalese. Fruit comes from two vineyards and aging is completed in stainless for a lengthy two years.

This Riserva bottling is all about the old vines of Gaglioppo planted in 1968 and its extended aging. The maceration is an extended one as the juice spends one month on its skins. The juice then spends one year in a large Slavonian oak barrel and then ages for almost three more years in bottle before release.

Abbia Nova, Piglio Superiore Rosso 2020

Variety: Cesanese

Piglio is a town of humble dwellings; Abbia Nòva was an abbey from an area where Benedictine monasteries were common; the monks would create libraries, teach agriculture, and plant vines. Today Daniele Proietti and Pierluca Proietti oversee the growth of the Cesanese and Passerina varieties, both indigenous to the Lazio region. Olive groves, medicinal herbs, walnuts and a vegetable garden are also maintained at the Abbia Nòva property. Wine is made from four different vineyards and olive oil from five different groves. San Giovanni is one of the contradas (vineyards) devoted to the Cesanese and Passerina varieties, and olive groves. Daniele and Pierluca emanate their humble farming families, a fusion of local tradition and deep culture.

Cesanese is an ancient grape variety indigenous to the Lazio region. It is not a grape variety for the faint-hearted. Though its structure is rather approachable, it has a “boar-like” gamey quality and a bitter finish, not unlike the Italian amari, balanced with sweet cranberry and pomegranate tones. It pairs exceptionally well with the regional cuisine that tends to be on the meaty side. This bottle comes from vines of volcanic soils ranging from 15-80 years old. The wine has a complex ageing journey, ageing in both oak and cement for over 20 months.

Making a name for yourself in the wine world is hard no matter where you are based, but being located in Burgundy makes this nearly impossible without a famed family name to back you. Agnes did not have this. What she does have is hard work and a belief in what she is doing. Agnes, year after year, makes elegant and delicate wines with a real sense of place. The wines drink exactly as they should for the level of designation and village they represent.

This Chardonnay comes from two different sites—young vines planted in 2015 from a plot in Volnay, and forty-year old vines from a plot in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune. The wine ages in primarily stainless steel, with 15% aged in barrel.

Alain Graillot, Crozes-Hermitage 'La Guiraude' 2019

Every wine region in the world has its benchmark producers. These are the producers that year after year release top tier wines with a consistent voice that is evident in each bottle. These producers are an inspiration to younger producers throughout the world. Alain Graillot is a classic example, presiding over 50 acres of 30+ year-old vines in Crozes-Hermitage, just off the powerful hill of Hermitage in the Northern Rhone. Graillot has always focused on the pursuit of greatness. Quality comes first. He passed in 2022, though his voice lives on with both of his sons, Antoine and Maxime, who picked up their father's torch back in 2008.

From his wines, Alain would select certain barrels to create a limited label known as “La Guiraude,” which he considers his best. He has been a guiding light for quality that every neighboring producer aims to emulate.

Alfredo Maestro, Vina Almate 2022

Alfredo Maestro’s family came to Peñafiel from the Basque Country. Having grown up amongst the vines, he had a great interest in wine and started making his own from an early age. From the beginning, he farmed organically, yet in the cellar he worked literally by the book, teaching himself enology from a textbook, using all the tricks to make a “correct” wine of Ribera del Duero. He would use cultured yeasts, tannins, color enhancers, etc. It took some time, but Alfredo eventually had a revelation—as an organic farmer, why would he use chemicals to adjust the finished wine? It made the most sense for his cellar work to match the integrity which he used in the vineyard—so he did just that. He began eliminating unnecessary products and additives. By 2003 he was making wine without additives whatsoever, including sulfur.

Viña Almate is the first wine that Alfredo made, named after himself (Al-ma-te). This is an entry-level Duero wine made from Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) sourced from various plots. The wine has a serious bit of stem inclusion, resulting in a powerful, spicy, and full-bodied red. It is fermented in stainless steel and spends the winter resting in vats.

Ampeleia, IGT Maremma 2019

Ampeleia was born only just in 2002 from the collaboration and friendship between noteworthy icons—Elisabetta Foradori, Thomas Widmann, and Giovanni Podini. They created a place where they could not only develop an agricultural project but also fulfill a common dream. The estate comprises different plots of land, each located far apart and on different altitude levels—their mission is to create variables in altitude, soil type and microclimatic conditions. Variety is the spice of life, at least Ampeleia, representing the project’s constant quality and willingness to discover. The grape varieties that have been planted are common to Mediterranean vineyards reflecting the tradition of growing multiple varieties in the same vineyard. Today, the estate extends over three altitude levels and covers 35 hectares of vineyard.

This is high altitude Cabernet Franc from the Ampeleia di Sopra vineyard. The grapes are fully destemmed and fermentation is done in cement tanks and large oak tasks, resulting in a pure, clean, and fruity wine. The wine then ages for two years in bottle before it is released.

Anthill Farms, Chardonnay Peugh Vineyard 2021

Anthill Farms is a group of three friends who went against all the odds to start a winery in California. They didn’t have money saved nor were they born into the business. They were cellar rats, the guys moving hoses and cleaning floors, for some pretty significant wineries, Williams Selyem being the most influential. However, while still quite young, the three decided to pull together a tiny amount of cash and started making wine at a crushpad facility. Before long the wines had a cult following and we’ve been drinking them ever since. Many of Anthill’s wines only make it to a mailing list or restaurants; we are lucky to include their small production wines.

Peugh Vineyard, located in the middle of the Russian River Valley, has head-trained Chardonnay vines, something rarely seen for this variety. This is normally used on crazy, rocky soils with Syrah, Grenache or Mourvedre, but not Chardonnay. The reason this happened is the vines were planted in the early 1940s when California growers had no idea what they were doing. The result today is that this unique Chardonnay is produced from some of the oldest vines in the entire state.

At first glance, “Ashes and Diamonds” only brushes the surface of what the winery truly represents. The story—or journey rather—begins in the autumn of 2013 when Kashy Khaledi (son of winemaker Darioush Khaledi) was a creative media executive at Capitol Records, the “ideal job.” In the midst of a lengthy creative stump, Khaledi would often turn to old films for inspiration. He found one that shifted the course of his life—the 50s Polish film Ashes and Diamonds. A dream started to take shape; Khaledi threw himself into researching the viticulture and enology that shaped California’s wine culture. His quest for joint ventures began; he teamed up with Steve Matthiasson and Diana Snowden, farming vineyards in Napa Valley in the pursuit of balanced wine.

Farmed by Steve Matthiasson, the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon come from three vineyards from Napa’s Oak Knoll and Yountville districts. Ageing is completed all in barrel, 30% of which is done in new French barrels. This is opulent and textured, a white wine worthy of age.

Benedicte & Stephane Tissot, Arbois Chardonnay 'Patchwork' 2022

Bénédicte et Stéphane Tissot are a powerhouse winemaking couple based out of Arbois in the Jura region. Their perspective plays vital to the style of their wine. They favor natural wines as opposed to industrial ones, and wines that show off nature’s gifts versus winemaking. Their wines have been certified biodynamic by Demeter. Many of Jura’s wines go for an oxidative style; their wines are not this. They prefer a reductive style, the opposite of the local style. Their love is shown by their passion and their drive to make several different wines.

Patchwork gets its name from the multitude of vineyards it draws its fruit from. Many would call this the winery’s flagship bottle, blending both the clay and limestone soils that represent the area of Arbois. This is not an oxidized style, but closer to that of a Premier Cru level of Puligny Montrachet.

Benjamin Leroux, Bourgogne Aligote 2022

Forging one’s own path is tough enough with a blank slate. Forging one’s own path in a place like Burgundy, with its rich family histories and formidable reputation is a Burgundian feat in itself, reminding us to recognize where you are and seeing potential. Not coming from a winemaking family, that is exactly what Benjamin Leroux has done with his domaine. Born and raised in Burgundy, he grew up running around his mother’s floral shop. It was there as a young boy that he by chance met wine geek extraordinaire Becky Wasserman, who was buying flowers at the time. This only strengthened his desire to become a vigneron in his home region.

True to his word he began his studies locally at age 15. Taking to it, his education continued abroad in New Zealand, Bordeaux and at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Louis Jadot in Beaune, and Comte Armand in Pommard, where he was named technical director and manager at the age of 24! He founded his own domaine and négoce in 2007 after fifteen years at Comte Armand.

The Leroux estate farms about 8 hectares, but draws from over 30 hectares total spanning the Côte from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin to produce these hidden gems. Leroux is a “small is beautiful” type of thinker. His reputation is that of prioritizing what he finds interesting about a parcel over its historical fame or popularity. He has discovered fantastic terroirs either long forgotten or undiscovered, a unique and rewarding approach for a domaine just establishing itself as a formidable entity in Burgundy viticulture.

Forging one’s own path is tough enough with a blank slate. Forging one’s own path in a place like Burgundy, with its rich family histories and formidable reputation is a Burgundian feat in itself, reminding us to recognize where you are and seeing potential. Not coming from a winemaking family, that is exactly what Benjamin Leroux has done with his domaine. Born and raised in Burgundy, he grew up running around his mother’s floral shop. It was there as a young boy that he by chance met wine geek extraordinaire Becky Wasserman, who was buying flowers at the time. This only strengthened his desire to become a vigneron in his home region.

True to his word he began his studies locally at age 15. Taking to it, his education continued abroad in New Zealand, Bordeaux and at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Louis Jadot in Beaune, and Comte Armand in Pommard, where he was named technical director and manager at the age of 24! He founded his own domaine and négoce in 2007 after fifteen years at Comte Armand.

The Leroux estate farms about 8 hectares, but draws from over 30 hectares total spanning the Côte from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin to produce these hidden gems. Leroux is a “small is beautiful” type of thinker. His reputation is that of prioritizing what he finds interesting about a parcel over its historical fame or popularity. He has discovered fantastic terroirs either long forgotten or undiscovered, a unique and rewarding approach for a domaine just establishing itself as a formidable entity in Burgundy viticulture.

The Defaix family is a fourth generation of a family of vine-growers rich in personality. Bernard Defaix started the vineyard in 1959 with 2 ha. Vineyard holdings across the Chablis region of Burgundy have expanded to 27 ha including three Premier Cru vineyards (Côte de Léchet, Vaillons and Lys) and others in the Chablis and Petit Chablis appellations. Bernard’s sons Sylvain and Didier have been managing the domain for about twenty years, handling winemaking and vineyard operations, respectively. Didier’s wife, Helene, handles administration and sales. Although this is a small property – common in France – the Defaix family undertook an extensive study of their vineyard soils to better understand vine root systems and the impact of mechanized vineyard operations. From 2012, they have been producing organic wines.

The Bourgogne Blanc is a similar concept to the Petite Chablis. It is solely based on the Chardonnay grape and ages on its fine lees for 8 months for texture in stainless steel. The main difference with the Bourgogne Blanc appellation is in the origins of the grapes—they don't need to be sourced entirely from the Chablis appellation.

Côte de Lechet is the name of this 51 hectare vineyard with a west-facing bank all to itself. The Defaix family farms eight hectares of this site and are noted for being the biggest vignerons of this cru. Not only does this site get plenty of sunshine, but there is a plethora of fantastic fossils known as Exogyra Virgula, an extinct variety of fossilized marine oysters that lie at the base of the vines. This is a site that ripens well and early, complimented by the distinct minerals found in its soils. This Premier Cru level Chablis undergoes extensive ageing on its lees and spends some time in neutral oak. Though this wine can be drunk immediately with your favorite fish dish, it will age exceptionally well.

Beru, Chablis 'Terroirs de Beru' 2019

Athénaïs of Chateau de Beru is one of the most discussed producers in Burgundy today. Coming from a domain with 400 years in the making, she leads the current generation of this property. The chateau has certainly experienced its ups and downs. As phylloxera devastated the family’s vines, new ones were not planted for almost 100 years. The fruit was sold to other Chablis co-ops up until 2004 when the death of Athena’s father happened. She traveled back to the domaine to assist her mother, Laurence. It was then that she began incorporating all sorts of changes. The family began bottling their wine, converted agriculture over to biodynamic, and opted to intervene minimally in the winemaking. The reputation is only improving and Beru has become known for their Chablis wines. ‘Athenais’ is the name of her negociant project, though still intertwined with the family domain.

'Terroirs de Beru' is village level Chablis, meaning the vines are sourced from different parcels to showcase both Chablis and Beru as a whole. The wine showcases elegance of the fruit and mineralogy of the kimmeridgian soil found beneath the vines.
