Perhaps you’ve heard of the ‘Gang of Four?’ It was a nickname lovingly bestowed to the most noteworthy winemakers of Cru Beaujolais—Jean Foillard, Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton. Enter Alex Foillard—son of Jean Foillard—who now runs his own show in the world of Beaujolais. His exposure to wine and all things Beaujolais came to him at a young age. He took on early interest, intent on carrying on his father’s trailblazing ways. While his father worked with vines in Fleurie and Morgon, Alex farms from both Brouilly and Côte-de-Brouilly. Beginning at just 24 years old, he has taken a page from his father’s finesse for winemaking, working organically and naturally.

Just south of the famed Cru of Morgon is the lesser known Cru of the Côte de Brouilly. The vines here are 30-60 years old. The rocky soils seem to marry the fruitiness of Beaujolais with the power of the wines from the northern Rhone, which actually aren’t that far south from here.

Benoit Daridan took over the family winery in 2001 after many years of study and work experience around the world. As the seventh generation to take over the small 15 hectare farm, Benoit has worked tirelessly to protect and promote the family traditions of passion for the regions terror. The vineyard is perfectly positioned between arguably the Loire Valley’s most two most famous properties: Chateau de Cheverny and Chateau de Chambord. While most of the vineyard is made up of young vines, they do pride themselves on a tiny two hectare plot of 50 year old vines.

You would think this wine was from the region of Burgundy based on its blend and style, but it is a fresher, possibly softer version coming from similar soil types in the ancient Loire Valley. It is mostly Pinot Noir with a little Gamay added; a Loire version of the Burgundy Passetoutgrain.

Domaine de Fa, Saint Amour 2020

The brothers Antoine and Maxime were in hot pursuit of new challenges beyond the Rhone valley due likely to their love for the Gamay grape. They purchased a five hectare plot named “En Besset” on a stony hillside in northern Beaujolais near the appellations of Saint-Amour and Julienas in 2013. And so began their new endeavor as a force to be reckoned with in a region currently experiencing viticultural renaissance. The granite hillsides are excellent for making a dense and chiseled example of Beaujolais while still remaining fresh and crushable. The brothers are making all the appropriate decisions in keeping their grapes organic, the vineyards biodynamic, and the winery itself sustainable.

From the most northerly village of the ten crus of Beaujolais is that of Saint-Amour. The Gamay comes from the single vineyard of Cotes de Besset with large pieces of granite and sand. This is impeccably well-made Beaujolais with floral, licorice, white pepper, and kicking acidity.

In the States, we talk about “The Deep South” and we are referencing the southern culture down by the gulf. The personalities coming from this part of the Country is unlike anything else. The hospitality is over the top yet sometimes slightly back country. This is very much the same for the regions where Dupeuble is from; this is the deep south of Beaujolais. Recently many of the Cru’s (towns) have become quite famous, but this part of the region is true farm country and has been for a long time. The Dupeuble Domaine dates back to 1512 and has produced wines with very little change in their methods.

The Dupeuble Beaujolais comes from vines ranging from 50-100 years old from clay, granite, and limestone soils. The juice ferments naturally via carbonic maceration and then ages in stainless steel. This bottle is an incredible value for what it represents; natural winemaking, old vines, and a traditional legendary winemaker to boot.

After the devastating 2016 vintage, which was wiped out from hail storms, the producers remain affable and optimistic. This is how "Famille Dutraive" came about; it's a negociant project co-owned by Jean-Louis and his three children. The fruit is sourced and then vinified by the Dutraive family in their cellars.

After the devastating 2016 vintage, which was wiped out from hail storms, the producers remain affable and optimistic. This is how "Famille Dutraive" came about; it's a negociant project co-owned by Jean-Louis and his three children. The fruit is sourced and then vinified by the Dutraive family in their cellars.

En Papolet is a lieu dit hailing from the village of Chénas sitting at an altitude of 300 meters. Charles Thillardon, owner of this site, are organic farming champions of Chénas. Jean-Louis Dutraive took the brothers under their wing after meeting them back in 2009. The mentality of helping each other out is clear as the brothers then helped the Dutraive family by selling them fruit after the terrible 2016 vintage.

This is a lively blend from two separate old vine sites in the cru of Chiroubles. Poullet is the first vineyard with a hillside at almost 400 meters in altitude and vines aged 70 years. The other vineyard site is Javernaud located at over 400 meters with vines aged about 60 years. This is a bright, fresh, and quaffable wine from Chiroubles.

The “Gang of Four” is a nickname lovingly bestowed on the most noteworthy winemakers who make Cru Beaujolais. Kermit Lynch christened the name to Jean Foillard, Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton. The significance of this nickname lies far beyond their talents. Before natural wine made its resurgence in the area, Beaujolais Nouveau was the popular choice for years, hitting the tables of many Americans’ Thanksgiving tables every November. Enter Kermit Lynch—he began to import the crus made by the Gang in the 90s. Jean Foillard played a major role in returning Beaujolais to its roots by starting with old vines, eliminating synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting for the healthiest grapes, and using minimal doses of sulfur or none at all.

Grown in the regions famous pink granite soils, from vine aging 45-50 years, this Fleurie comes from a plot spanning just 1 hectare. The vines see no contact with herbicides or pesticides, and every grape cluster twisted from the vine by hand.

Enter Kermit Lynch—he began to import the crus made by the Gang in the 90s. Jean Foillard played a major role in returning Beaujolais to its roots by starting with old vines, eliminating synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting for the healthiest grapes, and using minimal doses of sulfur or none at all.

This cuvee comes from 80 year-old organic vines grown on a parcel of specifically sandstone soils. Classic to Beaujolais, the wine is whole-cluster fermented with minimal intervention to showcase terroir.

There’s a relatively newfound love for Cru Beaujolais among the sommelier set and Domaine de la Grand’Cour is one of the rock star producers to make its way into the American market. Winemaker Jean-Louis Dutraive is a 5th generation vigneron focusing on small parcels of Gamay grown with integrity and produced with minimal intervention. All the wines undergo carbonic maceration for the fermentation and a mixture of different size barrels and cement casks are used for the elevage. Finished wines are unrefined and unfiltered before bottling. At nearly 60 years old, Jean-Louis Dutraive has long held the respect of local farmers from his region but has recently turned into a rather dark horse favorite among global wine geeks.

A limited amount was made of this Vieilles Vignes wine coming from a parcel in the Brouilly Cru. Jean-Louis' father kept this parcel, even after moving the family domain to Fleurie. Vines in this parcel average 50 years, though some are well over 100 years in age. Brouilly is known for its volcanic rock; however, this site is different because of its limestone and clay.

This label is separate from father Jean-Paul’s original Morgon project; instead father and son Charly collaborate for this label based out of the neighboring village of Regnie. While they have the same approach in the vineyards and cellar, the outcome is noticeably different. The Morgon wines are rich and plush while the Regnie is spiced and textured

The granite-based vines from Regnie are as old as 90 years coming from two different sites. The fruit is low-yielding, though the wine is complex, textured, and aromatic. Farming here is completed biodynamically and aging is done completely in cement.

This transition happened in 2001 and his first step of action was acquiring more top tier vineyards plots around Nantes and converting them all to organic. The dedication of capturing the coastal influence of the Atlantic and showcasing that Muscadet can be everything from Parisian cafe wine to serious vibrant and elegant wine. To do this, everything comes down to the work in the vines. Jeremie is known for the amount of time he spends walking the parcels, having eyes on his vines to understand and highlight growth year after year. The cellar is full of concrete, both glass-lined buried in the earth and eggs for a natural sur-lie movement.

With the region gaining much attention from wine geeks worldwide due to the versatility of the wines (for dining or just flat out drinking), the camaraderie of the vignerons is unparalleled. There is a young, energetic group with easy access to top vineyard sites and everyone is cheering each other on. Following a childhood bred on his father Jean Louis Dutraive’s incomparable winemaking in Beaujolais, harvests in Oregon and Australia, and internships with family friends, Justin decided to start his own path.

These grapes are sourced from the hillside parcel of Les Tours in the village of Saint-Etienne-la-Varenne near the Crus of Brouilly and Cote de Brouilly. Vinified in sphere-shaped fiberglass tanks that rotate on their axis (as opposed to using the pump over method) the wine presents fruit forward and fresh without lacking in textural richness.

Maesta Della Formica, Toscana Gamo Rosso 2020

Maesta Della Formica, meaning “majesty of the ant” is a relatively new producer founded in just 2013. After oenology and viticulture school at the University of Pisa, there began a common goal from two friends of growing Riesling in peaks of Tuscany. Along with this focus began a series of other international varieties, like those of Gamay and Syrah. The wines have very low intervention with marketing that is both playful and honest. Beyond the vines, they also cultivate other agriculture that do well in the high altitude areas of Tuscany, like chestnuts, juniper, and blackthorn.

Aromatics from a red Burgundy, spices you’d get from a Rhone red, and the soils of Tuscany and you’ll have the Gamo Rosso. This wine is all about its lightness and elegance while being versatile and food friendly.

Marcel Lapierre ‘Le Beaujolais’ 2022 1.5 MAGNUM

Marcel Lapierre is a name that will live on as a legend in the region of Beaujolais. After taking over his father’s domain, life changed for Marcel when he met Jules Chavet, who has been deemed his spiritual godfather. Jules represented many things to Marcel in the winemaking world, but most notably, it was he who had spoken about natural wine during the 1950s when chemical fertilizers and pesticides began to appear. He wanted to keep the traditional ways of Beaujolais intact. Marcel Lapierre became the torch carrier of this return to natural winemaking, and additionally, the “Gang of Four”—a nickname given by Kermit Lynch to Marcel and local vignerons who carried out this mission. This return to old ways meant harvesting later, starting with old vines that naturally yield lower, and minimal doses of sulphur dioxide or none at all. Marcel Lapierre unfortunately passed in 2010; his son Mathieu carries on the legacy of his father.

Call it “mini Morgon” if you will, but this by no means a village level Beaujolais. The vines are all 50 to 80 years old coming from just outside the boundaries of Morgon. The fruit gets declassified while you still get the pleasure factor of Beaujolais by the Lapierre family.

Marcel Lapierre is a name that will live on as a legend in the region of Beaujolais. After taking over his father’s domain, life changed for Marcel when he met Jules Chavet, who has been deemed his spiritual godfather. Jules represented many things to Marcel in the winemaking world, but most notably, it was he who had spoken about natural wine during the 1950s when chemical fertilizers and pesticides began to appear. He wanted to keep the traditional ways of Beaujolais intact. Marcel Lapierre became the torch carrier of this return to natural winemaking, and additionally, the “Gang of Four”—a nickname given by Kermit Lynch to Marcel and local vignerons who carried out this mission. This return to old ways meant harvesting later, starting with old vines that naturally yield lower, and minimal doses of sulphur dioxide or none at all. Marcel Lapierre unfortunately passed in 2010; his son Mathieu carries on the legacy of his father.

The vines for this special bottle are 100 years old, taking the idea of old vines several steps further. It is a more serious, intense, and complex version of the traditional Morgon. This will need time in the bottle or time in the decanter, or perhaps both.

Raisins Galois, in a way, is a declassified version of the Morgon bottling also made by Mathieu Lapierre. The juice is derived almost all from the Morgon cru, but higher yields and younger vines are what sets it apart. Because its yield surpasses the 56 hectoliters per hectare, the wine does not quite make the cut. Even so, the wine is less concentrated, easier to drink, and lower in alcohol, making it an all around crown pleaser. “Raisins Galois” means simple “Gallic grapes.”

These wines are new to Ohio and we cannot get enough of them. Aude Benoit and her husband Maxime sought to build a project together where they farm just three hectares of vines in the Cote de Beaune. Vines are sourced from three different coveted appellations in the Cote de Beaune; the villages of Beaune, Pommard, and Meursault. This is as small as it gets when it comes to a winemaking entity; there are no other employees working their vineyards other than family members themselves. Small production and difficult to come by.

Using the two main red varieties of Burgundy, the Pinot Noir and Gamay complement each other in this red that works well both for everyday, though special enough to be opened for an occasion.

Mee Godard, Morgon Corcelette 2021

Before Mee Godard moved to France, she studied wine in Oregon, then moved her way to enology school in Montpellier. Her love for the Beaujolais area grew after working for several Burgundy based wineries. Beaujolais is one of the few places in France where an aspiring winemaker can start up their own winery. Mee is a one-person show that prunes, farms, and runs a strict cellar. She is part of a new wave of talented individuals that are actively paving a path for the future generation of winemakers by setting new trends. Everything is done by hand in the vineyard and yields are kept low. She is slowly converting the agriculture to biodynamic methods, though already practices organic. Her style involves using both carbonic and non-carbonic maceration for deeply structured wine. Keep an eye out for her Morgon wines of Beaujolais because she continues to deliver.

Corcelette has a reputation as a famous vineyard in the northerly area of Morgon. The average age of the vines is 70 years; they're densely planted and low yielding. This is a wine that can function as the picnic wine and still grace fine dining tables. It pairs beautifully with food, but doesn't need it. This is her most approachably priced bottle.
