Depending how you look at it, ‘A Vita can either be viewed as a lifetime or ‘from life.’ Either way you see it, this small winery is bringing a breath of fresh air to the most southerly region on the boot—Calabria. Dup Francesco and Laura de Franco farm in the DOC of Ciro, straddling the area between the Ionian sea and the Sila mountains. The area is known more so for its bulk wine, though ‘A Vita makes about 2000 cases in total. Their approach to farming and winemaking is minimal as they bring an overlooked region into the world spotlight.

‘Il Rosso’ blends the classic variety of Calabria, Gaglioppo, with the other red variety, Magliocco. Gaglioppo is not only an offspring to the Tuscan Sangiovese, but also a cousin to the Sicilian Nerello Mascalese. Fruit comes from two vineyards and aging is completed in stainless for a lengthy two years.

The Gaglioppo fruit comes from a vineyard right near the Ionian Sea. The juice undergoes the saignee method after 12 hours on its skins yielding a darker rosato with a brickish hue. Its salty with a tannin kick, a fairly accurate representation of Mediterranean rose.

This Riserva bottling is all about the old vines of Gaglioppo planted in 1968 and its extended aging. The maceration is an extended one as the juice spends one month on its skins. The juice then spends one year in a large Slavonian oak barrel and then ages for almost three more years in bottle before release.

Abbia Nova, Piglio Cercia Rosso 2019

Variety: Cesanese

Piglio is a town of humble dwellings; Abbia Nòva was an abbey from an area where Benedictine monasteries were common; the monks would create libraries, teach agriculture, and plant vines. Today Daniele Proietti and Pierluca Proietti oversee the growth of the Cesanese and Passerina varieties, both indigenous to the Lazio region. Olive groves, medicinal herbs, walnuts and a vegetable garden are also maintained at the Abbia Nòva property. Wine is made from four different vineyards and olive oil from five different groves. San Giovanni is one of the contradas (vineyards) devoted to the Cesanese and Passerina varieties, and olive groves. Daniele and Pierluca emanate their humble farming families, a fusion of local tradition and deep culture.

This Cesanese comes from sandy, volcanic soils out of a 25 year old vineyard site. The fruit is completely destemmed and goes on to age for 12 months in amphora and one month in small barrels.

Cesanese is an ancient grape variety indigenous to the Lazio region. It is not a grape variety for the faint-hearted. Though its structure is rather approachable, it has a “boar-like” gamey quality and a bitter finish, not unlike the Italian amari, balanced with sweet cranberry and pomegranate tones. It pairs exceptionally well with the regional cuisine that tends to be on the meaty side. This bottle comes from vines of volcanic soils ranging from 15-80 years old. The wine has a complex ageing journey, ageing in both oak and cement for over 20 months.

Way back in 1900, a Frenchman by the name of Pierre Tintero, found himself in Piedmont in the pursuit of work. He found work in the form of a struggling widow who needed help with her estate; Pierre became an asset to the estate, and ultimately, fell in love with the widow Rosina. Elvio Tinttero, for who the winery is named, began experimenting with the difficult process of frizzante wines in the 80s. Now on to the fourth generation, Marco and Cinzia are running the operations today. The focus of their winemaking is Moscato d’Asti, the slightly fizzy frizzante wine with a distinctive sweetness.

This is single vineyard Moscato d’Asti coming from 30 year old vines. There might not be another single Moscato d’Asti quite like this one; it has terroir and complexity. “Sori” is Piedmontese for a south-facing slope while Gramella is the name of the area in Asti that grows these Moscato grapes. Fermentation only begins when an order is received in order to maintain the freshest wine possible.

Variety: Syrah and Nero D'Avola

Alessandro Viola is known by some as the Sicilian wine master. His wines hail from Alcamo in the northwestern corner of the island, right on the coast. He has just seven hectares, but plants all the classic varieties of the island, both white and red. Being that small, he’s able to oversee all operations in the vineyard and in the winery. His winemaking philosophy is pure and simple like his wine; “make wine using only grapes,” which drives home his natural winemaking style.

“Notes of Red” is a blend of the indigenous Nero d’Avola and the non-indigenous Syrah. It’s fruity, crunchy, and spicy. The winemaking process is completely natural, and includes the phrase “Senza Solfiti Aggiunti” which means no added sulphites. It’s aged in chestnut barrels, classic for the reds of Sicily.

They created a place where they could not only develop an agricultural project but also fulfill a common dream. The estate comprises different plots of land, each located far apart and on different altitude levels—their mission is to create variables in altitude, soil type and microclimatic conditions. Variety is the spice of life, at least Ampeleia, representing the project’s constant quality and willingness to discover. The grape varieties that have been planted are common to Mediterranean vineyards reflecting the tradition of growing multiple varieties in the same vineyard. Today, the estate extends over three altitude levels and covers 35 hectares of vineyard.

This Cabernet Franc hails from “La Rocca” vineyard, which refers to the site being a natural fortress ringing in at 500 meters altitude. This wine is a celebration of the wine as a monovarietal, which shows off the clay-limstone and schist soils from which it hails. On a clear day, the island of Corsica can be seen while standing in La Rocca vineyard.

Andrea Felici started bottling his wines in 2002, but when his son Leonardo wanted to join the family firm, Andrea wisely sent him to get experience in the wider world, to develop a taste for fine wine, to broaden his perspectives before he came back to their tiny village in the region of the Marche. Leo spent four years working as a sommelier, then returned home. He and his father began converting the vineyards to organic. They make just two wines: a young vine Verdicchio, and a lees-aged Verdicchio from 50 year old vines. Both are delicious at incredible value.

Arianna Occhipinti is a young woman of fierce perspective and drive. Her uncle is Giusto Occhipinti of the Sicilian COS winery. At age sixteen, Arianna was invited by Giusto to help out at the Vinitaly international wine exhibit. In four days time, she knew that she then wanted to study wine at university. Ironically, university did not help with her professional career, as everything she had learned was from her uncle. Undeterred, she began fresh with just one acre of abandoned vines, and grew. Her focus then became Frappatto and Nero D’avola, grown naturally and biodynamically. Not to be overshadowed by her uncle, Arianna has grown into her own person as a winemaker and received international acclaim as a young woman in the industry.

The bottle’s name is Siccagno, referring to both the vineyard name and local dialect for “good wine.” This is a special bottle of Nero d’Avola coming from older vines. The wine undergoes a longer maceration period than her other wines and then spends two years in large oak barrels.

The SP68 refers to the main road that runs by the vineyards. It is also the oldest wine route ever attested as peasants would use this route to bring wines to the coast. Arianna likes to say that she is carrying the past and future at the same time via SP68. This is a blend of Muscat di Alexandria (but not sweet!) and the local Sicilian white called Albanello. This undergoes a couple weeks of skin maceration for texture, then six months in concrete, and one month in bottle.

Giovanni Ascione and Maurizio Alongi are Italian natives who have both coincidentily worked in winemaking regions all over Europe. Both worked independently for years doing consulting for many esteemed estates across Italy before deciding to branch out together. Avoiding over-ripening and over-extraction, the duo is inspired by vinifiying lessor-known and often-blended varietals into single varietal bottlings.

This is the case with the Canaiolo, a grape with lively tannins, complimented by red fruit flavours and a floral nose.

Barbacan, 'Sol' Valtellina Superiore Valgella 2021

Variety: Chiavennasca or Nebbiolo

Barbacan is a miniscule estate of just three hectares in the far north of Italy on the Swiss border. Here the Sega family is one of the few growers in the appellation of Valtellina in Lombardy that are making wine completely naturally. Coupled with what the Italians call “heroic viticulture,” the grueling work put forth by this father and his two sons is beyond impressive. Valtellina is a serious valley of terraced vineyards. Both human efforts and the grapes are stressed, and this shows in the beautiful wines of this unique Alpine area. Chiavennasca is the local name for the variety we know as Nebbiolo.

“Sol” means sun in Italian. As seen from the label, the sun plays a vital role in the life of the vine, as well as how the Chiavennasca vines are terraced at very high altitudes. The juice spends three months macerating on the skins, then ages in a mixture of acacia and chestnut barrels for one year. It then spends another nine months in concrete before it’s ready.

Barbacan is a miniscule estate of just three hectares in the far north of Italy on the Swiss border. Both human efforts and the grapes are stressed, and this shows in the beautiful wines of this unique Alpine area. Chiavennasca is the local name for the variety we know as Nebbiolo.

Alpi Retiche, or the Rhaetian Alps, are a smaller mountain range of the easter Alps while also distinguishing itself as a separate appellation from Valtellina. There are often a small blend of other grape varieties in the mix beyond Nebbiolo. This undergoes a shorter skin maceration than ‘Sol.’ It is aged in a mixture of Slavonian oak and steel tanks before release.

Berto is the story of a distillery in Piedmont representing the classic vermouths of the region. At the time of its purchase in 1906, Carlo Quaglia was its owner, whose great-grandson now directs the distillery. The recipes of the classic sweet vermouths, the blanc and rosso, have been passed down over the years from one generation to the next, each son enhancing Berto’s recipe with their own vision. Bèrto comes from the nicknamed nephew of the chef who resurrected and recreated the Quaglia recipe back in the 1930s. These are vermouths that can stand on their own, but serve well as an inclusion in cocktails. This sweet vermouth is extremely versatile for cocktails—the Manhattan, Negroni, Boulevardier. We also love this one on ice with an orange peel as the ideal aperitivo.

Bonavita, Faro DOC 2019

Variety: Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and Nocera

The small holding of Bonavita has been in the family of Giovanni Scarfone for more than 100 years in the small region of Faro, which is northeast of Etna. After studying agriculture at school in Bologna, Giovanni opted to return and put to practice what he had learned. He converted his vineyards to organic, even though his father and grandfather never used chemicals anyway. Before the 2006 vintage, only the family consumed the wines made on the farm. The vineyards sit atop a large hill in the town of Faro. Lower down the hill is the family’s garage doubling as a wine cellar. The family creates wines reminiscent of Etna Rosso, although at a lower altitude and with the addition of the Nocera variety to add acidity.

Only 7000 bottles of this wine are made. The fermentation takes place in both oak and steel with a long maceration of the skins anywhere from 20-60 days. The juice ages in a mix of smaller 30 liter oak barrels, steel, and cement for two years, and then another year in the bottle before its release.

Borgo Paglianetto is a relatively new winery born in 2008. In the central area of the Marche region are the vineyards that span the valley between Fabriano and Camerino. The wines come from the production area of Verdicchio di Matelica. This region is a short distance from the Adriatic Sea and dredged in the history of its vine growing. The closed-off Alta Valle dell ‘Esino within Matelica is unique in that it boasts north-south facing vineyards, in turn creating a unique microclimate for these vines. Borgo has a clear mantra of using the historic land to express terroir through quality and passion.

“Terravignata” is a local term referring to the olden times of wealthy Roman landowners who owned land exclusively for growing grape vines. The Verdicchio grapes come from a West-facing slope and are picked early. This wine is fresh and ready to drink after just four months in stainless steel and two in the bottle.
