Amplify Wines, Tempranillo C5 Vineyard 2018
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00Variety: Tempranillo
Cameron and Marlen Porter, a husband and wife team born and raised in Santa Barbara County. The exploration, and elevation, of this growing region has been their life's work. They first bonded over a shared love for wine and music, and Amplify is a natural extension of this marriage between their two greatest passions. As winemakers, they seek to amplify the voice of site and enhance the most singular characteristics of a given vineyard, marrying a sense of place with a sense of style. They believe in: native yeast fermentations; neutral vessels for fermentation and aging; no additions of any kind except for minimum effective sulfur dioxide; and farming that seeks to establish a healthy ecosystem, enhancing and supporting the natural characteristics of a given place. They embrace the happy accident, letting intuition guide our hand, with their creative spirit and palates as their primary tools.
The site in question, a new addition to their lineup, is the C5 Vineyard, planted on a mesa in Santa Ynez and reputed for noteworthy Tempranillo. The wine is inspired by Spanish classics of the same variety – think Rioja or Ribera del Duero -yet retains its modern Cali zip.

Anthill Farms, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2020
Regular price $38.00 Save $-38.00Variety: Pinot Noir
Anthill Farms is a group of three friends who went against all the odds to start a winery in California. They didn’t have money saved nor were they born into the business. They were cellar rats, the guys moving hoses and cleaning floors, for some pretty significant wineries, Williams Selyem being the most influential. However, while still quite young, the three decided to pull together a tiny amount of cash and started making wine at a crushpad facility. Before long the wines had a cult following and we’ve been drinking them ever since. Many of Anthill’s wines only make it to a mailing list or restaurants; we are lucky to include their small production wines.
This wine sources Pinot Noir from the two coolest coastal parts of the appellation of Sonoma Coast in Sonoma County—the low coast and the high coast. Due to its consistent cool breezes from the coastal microclimate, picking is delayed until October, giving grapes a long growing season and time to develop complexity.

In the western part of Sonoma County, close to the coast and the northern edge of the Petaluma Gap is the Peters Vineyard site farmed by none other than Randy Peters. Ashes & Diamonds, Blanc #3 2017
Regular price $50.00 Save $-50.00Variety: Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc
At first glance, “Ashes and Diamonds” only brushes the surface of what the winery truly represents. The story—or journey rather—begins in the autumn of 2013 when Kashy Khaledi (son of winemaker Darioush Khaledi) was a creative media executive at Capitol Records, the “ideal job.” In the midst of a lengthy creative stump, Khaledi would often turn to old films for inspiration. He found one that shifted the course of his life—the 50s Polish film Ashes and Diamonds. A dream started to take shape; Khaledi threw himself into researching the viticulture and enology that shaped California’s wine culture. His quest for joint ventures began; he teamed up with Steve Matthiasson and Diana Snowden, farming vineyards in Napa Valley in the pursuit of balanced wine.
Farmed by Steve Matthiasson, the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon come from three vineyards from Napa’s Oak Knoll and Yountville districts. Ageing is completed all in barrel, 30% of which is done in new French barrels. This is opulent and textured, a white wine worthy of age.

Division Wine Co. Gamay “Gala” 2021
Regular price $35.00 Save $-35.00Variety: Gamay
Kate Norris and Thomas Monroe began Division Wine Co. back in 2012. It is a company based in Portland while fruit is spruced from multiple vineyards throughout the Willamette Valley. They both have lived and worked all over with overlapping gigs in the regions of Burgundy, Loire, and Beaujolais. Their mindset is a simple one—to make well-made unpretentious wine inspired by their passions from the classic regions of France all while paying respect to both farming and minimal winemaking. They work with small growers in the Willamette, often leaning towards their favorites, Chenin Blanc and Gamay. Their wines ought to demand higher price points for their quality, though for now we should simply snatch them up.
“Gala” comes from the Jubilee vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills zone of the Willamette. It’s Beaujolais, but Oregon. It’s aged for a few months in older barrels and released immediately.

Donkey & Goat, Pinot Gris Ramato Filigreen Farm Anderson Valley 2019
Regular price $36.00 Save $-36.00Variety: Pinot Gris (Orange Wine)
In short, Jared and Tracey Brandt of Donkey and Goat Winery are pioneers of the natural winemaking movement in California. After spending time in France back in 2002 with noteworthy winemaker Eric Texier, they returned home to Cali, inspired and ready to apply their inspirations in winemaking and marketing. Using a completely natural process in the cellar and vineyards; the couple does not fine or filter the wines, and just a small amount of sulfur is used at bottling. Their winemaking headquarters are located in Berkeley where they can implement their hands-on approach; they source grapes from Sierra Nevada, Mendocino, and Napa.
Pinot Gris, or Pinot Grigio, has many shades. In the northern areas of Italy, like Friuli, “Ramato” was a method of using skin contact to impart texture, color, and richness to the Pinot Grigio. This grape variety is unique in that it is “grey” in color on the vine, but can produce a strikingly orange-hued juice. This bottle comes from purely free-run juice to make for a softer wine. It’s like biting into a tart apricot with the funk you’d expect from an orange wine while delivering the quirkiness of Donkey and Goat. Fun fact: ramato is Italian for a red-haired person.

Enfield Wine Company, Fort Ross-Seaview Cabernet Sauvignon Waterhorse Ridge 2018
Regular price $75.00 Save $-75.00Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot
Enfield Wine Company is the passion project of John Lockwood and his wife Amy Seese. Founded in 2010, the project is very young, but despite that has recently started to gain attention nationwide. These are truly some of our favorites from California. John only uses native yeast and the wine is never filtered or cold stabilized. The growers he works with changes from year to year while he continues his relationships with small growers from some of California’s most special heritage sites. His passion is contagious and his energy unwavering.
Waterhorse Ridge is a special vineyard located on a rocky ridge a mere five miles from the Pacific. This site is among the coolest in the California area due to its proximity to the ocean, but is balanced by the volcanic rocky soils and its advantageous afternoon sunlight. The grapes were destemmed, but 20% of the stems were added back. The wine ages for 18 months in different sizes of French oak barrels, 15% of which is new. As John Lockwood said, “The wine is “seductively ripe while maintaining its elegance.”

Erggelet Brothers, Old Vine Mataro, 2018
Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00Variety: Mataro
Julian and Sebastian Erggelet have unexpected origins; all the same, it makes perfect sense. The brothers grew up in southern Germany and were heavily inspired by the wines their grandfather would consume at the table. After spending years in non-wine career paths and working harvests in various countries. The brothers eventually arrived in Contra Costa County in 2014 fueled with passion to not only begin their own farm called The Urban Edge, and additionally working with several farmers around the area who’ve been farming for generations. California sunshine, “patience, a good sombrero, and German OCD” is what makes the Erggelet brothers the real deal in New California wine.
Mataro, a variety of Mediterranean descent, and otherwise known as Mourvedre in France, isn't widely planted in California, though this one certainly has us questioning why we don’t see more of it. The Errgelet brothers purchase fruit from ‘Del Barba’ Vineyard, the Del Barba family having farmed these same vines since the early 1900s. Century old vines yielding low amounts of fruit at a ridiculous price point—it’s simply outrageous.

Evening Land, Chardonnay La Source Seven Springs Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills 2018
Regular price $90.00 Save $-90.00Variety: Chardonnay
Evening Land's Seven Springs Vineyard is one of the oldest and most sought-after sites in the Willamette Valley. Al MacDonald planted the vines in 1984 next to the Douglas fir trees that surround the northern section of the property. The vineyard has always been dry-farmed and is positioned to capture the cold air from the Pacific that enters the valley through the Van Duzer Corridor, just to the north of the appellation. Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman are two of the top names in the wine world today, and recently they obtained 100% control of the site. With their vigilant oversight and visionary stance on winemaking, the quality of these wines continues to elevate.
This is just about the best that Seven Springs Vineyard has to offer. La Source is a smaller portion of the broader site with volcanic soil full of iron-forward rocks and pebbles; a true representation of its place. This spends 12 months in puncheons (smaller barrels) and another six months in tank.

Regular price $113.00 Save $-113.00Variety: Chardonnay
Summum is the name of just fourteen rows of vines located in the middle of the Seven Springs Vineyard. With its rich volcanic soils and site location, it is the best that the vineyard has to offer. The wine’s aging takes place between new puncheon barrels and stainless steel.

Hirsch Vineyards, 'Bohan-Dillon' Pinot Noir 2019
Regular price $50.00 Save $-50.00Variety: Pinot Noir
Stand above the fog line and glimpse the power of the Pacific at 1500 ft. elevation and you’ll begin to understand what attracted David Hirsch to his extreme site back in 1980. Hirsch was not born into the wine world. Rather he was a lover of pinot noir, more specifically Burgundy, to which I can very much relate. Buying and selling textiles between the US and France, he reached a turning point. The lure of a quiet farm life with his family brought him to Fort-Ross Seaview, on the Sonoma coast, just three hours from San Francisco. The property sits on a ridgeline, cleared of redwoods and fir trees with a climate that is incredibly coastal. Straddling the San Andreas Fault, the soils are intensely complex. Most world class vineyard sites are known for only having a few soils. Hirsch, on the other hand, has 44 different soil types. It should come as no surprise that this is one of the most expressive and important vineyards in the US.
Bohan-Dillon transcends what you may expect from Hirsch. Just as much as there is attention to detail is a level of drinkability with this bottle, which Hirsch encourages. “Bohan-Dillon” is the name of a road that runs north to south in Sonoma Coast, though is also named after Mike Bohan, who is noted as being the first modern wine grower there. This is an ode to the village level wines of France. The integrity is the same as the top wines, though the only difference is the time spent in the barrel, making for an accessible wine that can be drunk young. Bohan comes from 20 to 30 year old vines. This is aged in open-top tanks and then aged in French oak, 12% of which is new.

Iruai, 'Tierra Extrana' Cabernet Franc 2020
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00Variety: Cabernet Franc
Chad Hinds started out as a chef, entering the world of work during the great recession of 2008-09. As a diversifying strategy, he started learning more about wine, then quickly aligned his thinking around the connections between natural food and wine. Chad finished a degree in enology before deciding in 2013 to create a winery, which he calls Methode Sauvage (“wild method”), initially focusing on finding a voice for Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc because he loves the grapes of the Loire Valley. As Chad’s interests and capabilities have grown, so has the range of wines he is producing as a sort of wunderkind of natural wines. In true gypsy form, the winery has taken on a new name, which is now the identity of Iruai.
Tierra Extraña means “strange land” and refers to the visiting Cabernet Franc which would usually feel at home in its native France. The wine is sourced from several cooler coastal sites, unusual for California as it is usually producing bigger fruiter wines.

Matthiasson, Cabernet Sauvignon Dead Fred Vineyard
Regular price $112.00 Save $-112.00Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
Steve Matthiasson is a California pioneer. Daring to break Napa tradition, Steve and his wife Jill have planted rare, ancient Italian grapes though recognize that Napa loves all the well-known international grapes. A Matthiasson tasting experience, laid out on the picnic table that separates their home from the winemaking operation (with their dog and at least one son stopping by!) shows instantly how the couple reveres the place they farm together. This is real California wine and Matthiasson’s wines are where California wine is headed. Steve Matthiasson is a six-time nominee for a James Beard award, a serious achievement in the wine industry. He has also been named “Winemaker of the Year” by both Food & Wine Magazine and The San Francisco Chronicle. Steve and Jill are long time friends and mentors to Hart & Cru.
This is a special site the Matthiassons began to farm themselves in 2012. While fruit from the site goes into their blended wine, the rest goes into this bottle. The fruit is harvested with multiple passes through the vineyard. It’s aged in all new large barrels, just 70 cases produced.

He has also been named “Winemaker of the Year” by both Food & Wine Magazine and The San Francisco Chronicle. Steve and Jill are long time friends and mentors to Hart & Cru.
This Rhone-inspired blend comes from two organic vineyards in Dunnigan Hills and Napa Valley. The fruit is grown exclusively for this rose and harvested early just as it would for a sparkling wine to retain all its glorious acidity. Everything about this wine is intentionally done in a fresh style which lends itself perfectly to all manner of spring vegetables and summer porch sipping.
