The Kofererhof estate has existed for over 850 years in the Sudtirol area of northern Italy, The winery didn’t start bottling its fruit until just 1995; before this, the fruit was always sold. The Kerschbaumer family has managed the winery for several generations in this area that’s more Austrian at heart than Italian. The family just have a few hectares of vineyards located between the Dolomites mountains at staggering altitudes of 700 to 800 meters. With this height, there is little choice but to harvest the grapes here by hand. Farming practices are organic in nature. The Kofererhof wines are incredible quality and limited quantities are made each year.
The Kerner variety is German by nature, but most of it is only exported from the Alto Adige region. It is one of the many children of Riesling, who paired up with Schiava—a German red variety—making for a lean and savory style.
