Variety: Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Colorino
The winemakers of Montevertine have always sought to make wines of place, wines that were true to where they were from, something in common with nearly all great wines. These are vines that are harvested by hand, and never feel the harsh touch of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Its high-altitude vineyards are some of the best in the region, some would say they are the very best. The wines themselves offer a complexity that is difficult to believe, and yet betray simple elements of the stone and earth of their home, a characteristic certainly of great Italian wine.
This is the flagship wine of Montervertine, and often dubbed the gold standard of what Sangiovese ought to be. Using mostly Sangiovese with a bit of Canaiolo, the fruit comes from vines about 40 years in age, then going on to age in Slavonian oak for two years before release. Even though the Montevertine Rosso could return to its classification as Chianti, it has been an IGT Toscana ever since. For this, it stands apart from the rest of the “Super Tuscans” as a wine of elegance and balance, and continues to be a bottle many swoon over.
