Maison Morey-Blanc, Aloxe Corton 1er Cru Rouge Clos du Chapitre 2020
Variety: Pinot Noir
Maison Morey-Blanc was established in the late 1990s by Pierre Morey after decades of work at Domaine Leflaive and at his own domaine in Meursault. The maison was created to vinify wines from long-term grower partners across the Côte d’Or, with a consistent focus on vineyards farmed sustainably or organically. Pierre’s background in biodynamic viticulture shaped the sourcing model: parcels are selected for careful vineyard management, low yields, and steady farming practices.
In recent years, Pierre’s daughter Anne Morey has taken on a central role in the operation. She now oversees much of the day-to-day management, vineyard relationships, and decisions in both the cellar and the broader strategy of the maison. Anne’s involvement marks a generational transition that maintains the domaine’s established practices while bringing a more detailed approach to grower partnerships and parcel-by-parcel oversight. Her leadership ensures continuity in the methods developed by Pierre and guides the next phase of the maison’s work.
Fermentations use native yeasts and restrained extraction, and élevage is carried out in older barrels with limited new oak. Each appellation is kept separate throughout the process, reflecting the stable set of vineyard sources used annually. Burgundy writers frequently note the Morey family’s long experience with precise farming and careful elevage, and the maison continues to be recognized for its consistent approach across multiple villages.
Clos du Chapitre is a walled premier cru on the north side of Aloxe-Corton. The vineyard sits on a gentle slope with soils of limestone mixed with compact clay, providing drainage and stable water retention. Orientation is east-facing, giving the site regular morning sun and moderate growing conditions. Vines are mature, and the enclosed nature of the clos creates a uniform environment with limited wind exposure.
Fruit is hand harvested and sorted, then fermented with native yeasts. A portion of whole clusters may be included depending on the year. Cap management is kept moderate. Aging occurs in French oak barrels, most of which are older, with a small percentage of new wood. Élevage generally lasts 12 to 15 months before bottling. The goal is to keep the structural features of the site consistent from one vintage to the next as the wine rotates through new releases annually.
