Variety: Rossese di Dolceacqua
Spearheading the second generation of this domain is Giovanna Maccario, whose father was a pioneer of western Liguria. The vines they work with are all ancient and the weather conditions are intense in this region. Their vineyards are located between two valleys leading to the nearby Ligurian coastline. Giovanna and her husband work their four hectares by hand, which yield some of the most captivating wine tasted recently. They focus on the local Rossese di Dolceacqua variety, which shares the same name as the region itself.
This grape variety is unique to the coastal area of Liguria. From an aromatic perspective, the varietal drinks somewhere in the realm of Gamay, Syrah, and some of the Alpine reds- savory, earthy, with hints of pine and spice. The vines are ancient, some as old as 120 years old. The vines are all too steep for anything other than hand harvesting. The winemaking takes place only in steel, making this drinkable right from the get go.
