Domaine Saint Gayan is based in Gigondas, which lies in the southern Rhone Valley, where history dates back to Roman times. The Meffre family first planted vineyards in the 15th century; the same family continues this legacy while respecting the tradition six centuries later. The very high proportion of old vines (many up to 100 years) planted on poor clay, limestone soils results in lower yields and higher quality and concentration. Saint Gayan experiences a unique microclimate with no mist or mold due to “Le Mistral,” the haunting wind from the north that sweeps through the valleys at aggressive speeds. The climate is dry, yet reserves of water below ground compensate for lack of rain.
The value of the Trescartes is unquestionable due to its quality being at Villages level. This is not an easy drinking wine like other Cote-du-Rhone styles; this is one that can age due its low yield and extremely old vines.
