The Ligneres family is bringing much needed attention to the Languedoc of southern France. The story is an unexpected one. Both the husband and wife have a background in medicine, and like many other traditional winemakers have wine running through their veins. Andre is a general practitioner and Suzette is a pharmacist. Together with their children, they manage La Baronne estate. The family is very much hands-on—they utilize dry-farming, hand harvesting, and have been certified organic and biodynamic.
While it wouldn’t be fair to play favorites, this wine is more or less the crown jewel of La Baronne. Planted in 1892, these vines produce a Carignan of great concentration and purity. What better way to experience Corbières’ most emblematic variety than by this bottle, bold yet elegant, with dark red fruits, herbs, and finessed tannin. A very serious wine that is remarkably refreshing. Unfined, unfiltered, and with several years bottle age on, it’s in a very good spot right now.
