It’s true: wine is good medicine!! La Baronne’s winemaker, Jean Lignères, is still a practicing medical doctor in the small village of Moux. He comes from a large family of doctors, inheriting the role of winemaker for the (now) 90-hectare estate his father purchased in 1957. His wife Anne, along with siblings Paul and Geneviève, run the winery. La Baronne is certified organic and biodynamic. Winemaking practices are gradually shifting away from oak maturation, and using more amphorae and egg-shaped terra cotta vats. Yet, Jean is careful to avoid the oxidative style that is associated with many natural wines.
Vinci, Cotes Catalanes "Rafalot" 2014Regular price $40.00 Save $-40.00
100 Year Old Vines
The name sounds Italian, the map edges toward Spain, but this domaine’s wines are decidedly Southern French. Olivier Varichon and Emmanuelle Vinci found their old-vine six hectares in 2001, and throwing caution to its high-altitude winds, began their dream life as vigernons. In addition to work out amongst the old vines, the pair created their own new vine nursery, allowing replanting as needed. Classic Rousillon varieties grow on crooked slopes. Rafalot is one hectare designation of 100+ year Carignan.

The Ligneres family is bringing much needed attention to the Languedoc of southern France. The story is an unexpected one. Both the husband and wife have a background in medicine, and like many other traditional winemakers have wine running through their veins. Andre is a general practitioner and Suzette is a pharmacist. Together with their children, they manage La Baronne estate. The family is very much hands-on—they utilize dry-farming, hand harvesting, and have been certified organic and biodynamic.
The “Cayreliéres” is Grenache that’s been unfined, unfiltered, and no sulphites have been added. It hails from the plot of the same name located in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France.

Maxime is truly one of the movers and shakers in the wine world today. Pushing the natural wine movement forward and producing wines with integrity and personality. His property is in the South Eastern appellation of Corbiéres in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. Maxime understands that learning from the greats of the wine world gives you an unprecedented knowledge of the vineyard and winemaking, hence his time spent training with the famed Jean Foillard in Morgon. Truly a naturalist at heart, his wines show the terrior -- pure rock and garrigue, wild herbs and shrubs -- that covers this part of France.
