Lopez de Heredia, Vina Tondonia Rioja Reserva 2010
Variety: Tempranillo, Garnacho, Graciano and Mazuelo
Lopez de Heredia is one of the historic guardians of classical Rioja and remains a landmark family run bodega in Haro. Founded in 1877, the estate still follows a production model established in the nineteenth century. Fermentation takes place in large oak vats, aging occurs in seasoned American oak barrels maintained by the estate’s own cooperage, and all vineyard work is carried out by hand. Four generations of the family have protected these methods, making the winery a reference point for traditional Rioja.
The estate farms several long established vineyards, including Tondonia, Bosconia, Cubillo, and Gravonia. Each site is managed with low yields and strict fruit selection, and each contributes a defined role in the cellar. Long aging in barrel and bottle is central to the estate’s identity. Writers often describe Lopez de Heredia as one of Rioja’s most important traditional bodegas, valued for its consistency and for the preservation of techniques that have largely disappeared elsewhere.
Viña Tondonia is the estate’s largest and most recognized vineyard. It lies on a bend of the Ebro River on soils of limestone rich alluvium with gravel and sand that provide drainage and support deep roots. The site shows steady airflow and gradual ripening, conditions that suit the long aging model of the bodega. The vineyard has been under family care for more than one hundred years and remains the backbone of the winery’s red wine production.
Fruit for Tondonia Reserva is harvested by hand and fermented in large upright oak vats with native yeasts. The wine then spends several years in seasoned American oak barrels that are repaired and maintained in the estate’s cooperage. Barrels are racked manually using the candle method, a practice preserved since the foundation of the winery. After barrel aging, the wine rests in bottle in the deep cellars until it meets the family’s release criteria. This process keeps the profile of Tondonia Reserva consistent from vintage to vintage as new releases replace older ones.
