Roagna, Barbaresco Albesani 2019
Variety: Nebbiolo
The Roagna family has farmed vineyards in Barbaresco and Barolo since the late nineteenth century, with documented holdings dating back to the 1890s. The estate is based in Barbaresco, where several generations of the family have worked the same parcels, passing vineyard knowledge directly from one generation to the next. Today the domaine is led by Luca Roagna, who continues the family’s long standing commitment to old vines, organic farming, and minimal intervention. Replanting is avoided whenever possible, allowing vines to develop deep root systems and preserve genetic material over decades.
The family has been closely associated with the idea that Nebbiolo should be understood through individual vineyards rather than blended across sites. Roagna was among the early producers in the region to bottle single cru wines consistently, focusing on long macerations, native fermentations, and extended aging. Their cellar practices remain closely aligned with methods used by previous generations, reinforcing continuity rather than stylistic change. Writers often reference the estate as a guardian of traditional Barbaresco, particularly for its dedication to old vine parcels and patient élevage.
Albesani is a historic cru in the commune of Neive, known for its south facing exposure and limestone marl soils. The vineyard sits at moderate elevation with steady airflow and even ripening. Fruit is harvested by hand and fermented with native yeasts in large wooden vats. Macerations are long and gentle, followed by aging in large neutral oak casks for extended periods. The approach is designed to maintain the vineyard’s natural structure and allow the wine to evolve slowly in bottle.
