il Raduno Delle Streghe, Falanghina 2021
Regular price $15.00 Save $-15.00Variety: Falanghina
You’d never see his name on the label, but Michael Schmelzer of Monte Bernardi is the winemaker behind this Campania-based project. His wine production has been increasing, though the quality of the wine remains the same as ever.
Meaning "the gathering of the witches," this wine's name takes inspiration from the area from which it hails. In the region of Campania in the south of Italy is where Falanghina thrives in the Mediterranean sun. Here in Campania is the province of Benevento, an area with an extensive history of witchcraft practice. Pagans would come to this province from all over and dance around a walnut tree on the banks of the Sabato River. In summary, Benevento is the gathering of the witches. Falanghina is one of the main varieties of Campania with roots originating in Greece.

Isole e Olena, Chianti Classico 2019
Regular price $35.00 Save $-35.00Variety: Sangiovese, Canaiolo, & Syrah
It is not enough to say that Isole e Olena is held to the highest regard and winemaker Paolo de Marchi has an unquestionable vision. Fourth generation winemaker Paolo De Marchi studied Agriculture at the University of Turin and worked harvests in California and France before returning to the family estate in 1976. He found much need for improvement and modernization in the Chianti Classico region. One of the first projects involved planting single vineyards of international varieties, such as Chardonnay and Syrah. With these steps, Paolo discovered a way to balance tradition with innovation. Isole e Olena is named for the formation of the two estates that were purchased by the De Marchi family in the 1950s. Over 43 years, he has earned a reputation as “Mr. Sangiovese” and also the “Dean of Chianti.” As of June 2022, Paolo sold Isole e Olena to the historic Biondi Santi producer located in Montalcino where he will stay involved as winemaker.
While Paolo de Marchi is known for his gift at making incredible Sangiovese, he blends the spicy Canaiolo and just a bit of Syrah into the blend for depth and grip. This wine is about finesse, bringing fruit and acidity together into a wonderfully balanced wine.

Corzano e Paterno, Rosato 2021
Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00Variety: Sangiovese
Wendel Gelpke, a Swiss architect, fell madly in love with these romantic hillsides. The Corzano property was purchased back in 1969, and then the neighboring property of Paterno in 1974. These hillsides are separated from the Chianti Classico subzone by the Via Cassia, a road that runs parallel to the river Pisa. Farming here has always been organic and her Sardinian sheep herd roams the rows to naturally fertilize the vines; talk about sustainability. As is classic for the area, the properties produce mainly Sangiovese. Wendel and the family own and operate the winery, and keep very occupied by making their own cheese and olive oil.
This is a purely Sangioves rosato, though in some years Canaiolo may be added. It is bottled the March after the harvest. This wine has become a gem vintage after vintage. The wine is consistent and always lovely.

Cirelli, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2020
Regular price $19.00 Save $-19.00Variety: Montepulciano
Francesco Cirelli is a rising star in Abruzzo and has already gained a cult following with select sommeliers in big cities around the world. He pushes boundaries in Abruzzo, where conventional farming has been the norm. Spraying chemicals and overworking the earth is not what he is interested in. After Francesco finished school, he quickly realized he wanted to pursue his love for lamb viticulture and all things wine. He purchased the Estate in 2003 and viewed the grounds as a whole working farm. He now has a mixture of crops and animals he raises, and each element works with each other to make the overall farm function.
Part of the Collina Biologica line, this is what Abruzzo is all about. Francesco takes tradition and meshes it with his terroir-driven mentality. Fresh, juicy, and aged in stainless and meant for consuming now.

Tenuta di Carleone, Chianti Classico 2019
Regular price $34.00 Save $-34.00Variety: Sangiovese
Tenuta Carleone di Castiglioni was first mentioned in the year 1078 when monks first founded it in Chianti, named for the village of Castiglioni meaning “small castle.” The property is a romantic vision of wooded hills, rivers, and fertile plains. Nestled in between the hills are the Sangiovese vines and olive trees. Though the property was farmed for hundreds of years, it did not become the winery of Tenuta di Carleone until 2012. Karl Egger and Sean O’Callaghan both operate the winery with a clear vision, making Sangiovese in a classic way, though with Sean’s twist. Nothing is added to the wine, grappa, or cold-pressed olive oils. Keep an eye on their other Sangiovese expressions, Il Guercio, Uno, Chianti Classico, and their grappa of Sangiovese named “Zero.”

Tenuta Maccan, Pinot Grigio 2020
Regular price $19.00 Save $-19.00Varietal: Pinot Grigio
The Maccan family has sustained three generations of winemakers in Friuli Grave, a region located in the northeastern area of Italy. The owner, Stefano Maccan, sums up the family’s vision with this quote, “My family’s passion for farming grew inside me until it became something more than mere curiosity and turned into determination... the determination to finally produce my own family wine.” Even though the Maccan family had been making wine dating back to 1788, it wasn’t until 2012 that Tenuta Maccan was an established domain. The Maccan team pays homage to tradition while innovating with their organic and certified sustainable farming techniques.
This Pinot Grigio has a short skin maceration of 24-48 hours, which imparts a gentle amberish gold tone to the wine. The wine aged further on its lees in stainless steel tanks. It is floral and gently fruity while having a definitive richness, lending itself well to lighter fish and rice dishes.

Historically, Dolcetto was given some of the best pieces of land, just above the Nebbiolo vineyards, where it is usually harvested first. The Vajra family continue to pay homage to the heritage of Piedmont by growing this variety. It is juicy and floral and ready for most occasions that involve food. Its ageing in stainless steel drives home its freshness.

COS, Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico 2017
Regular price $35.00 Save $-35.00Variety: Nero d'Avola, Frappato
Giusto Occhipinti of COS is one of the most critical names in Italy. COS was founded by three friends to make traditional wine with respect for the place the grapes are grown. During their first harvest in 1980, they were the youngest wine producers in Italy. The acronym of their three last names forms “COS.” They were early adopters to Biodynamic farming, starting a movement on the island, which are still golden standards. The friends are hard workers, using an old winery given to them by a family friend and opting to use terracotta vases for ageing, a completely neutral vessel. Sicily has just one DOCG—Cerasuolo di Vittoria; the friends were the first winery to bottle a DOCG wine in Sicily. COS is located in Vittoria, the farthest tip of southeastern Sicily. The area recalls that of Africa, with its climate and land of red, ochre, and yellow tones.
Fermentation begins in concrete followed by ageing in Slavonian oak for 18 months, and then another year in bottle before it’s released. This wine can go into the cellar, though can still be enjoyed now. It is smooth and delicate, pairing well with many Mediterranean dishes.

Pietracupa, Falanghina 2019
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00Variety: Falanghina
Winemaker Sabino Loffredo has swiftly created a reputation within and beyond Italy for some of the most exquisite Greco and Fiano wines in Avellino of Campania in the south of Italy. Pietracupa was founded in 1993 by his family, starting as just 3 hectares of vineyards. The vines were chosen with the intent of showcasing the mountainous terrain of Avellino to the world. He produces limited amounts of Fiano, Greco, Falanghina, and Aglianico coming from some of the finest vines in Avellino. Both wine and winemaker share a similar mantra; staying original and faithful to the land with elegance, depth, and minerality. Due to the southern climate of Campania, the wines benefit from longer time on the vine. These coastal wines crave seafood and olive oil based dishes.

Monte Bernardi, Italia Ti Adoro - 1 Liter
Regular price $19.00 Save $-19.00Variety: Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera, Colorino, Frappato, Nerello Mascalese, Nero D'Avola, Montepulciano.
Even though the estate Monte Bernardi dates back to 1085 in the region of Panzano in Tuscany, Michael Schmelzer and family purchased the estate in 2003 and have been making beautiful Sangiovese-based wines and olive oil ever since. The property’s vineyards are situated in the hilly, southern-most region of Panzano, an area that has been acknowledged as one of the “Grand Crus” of Chianti Classico. Most of the vineyards are more than 40 years old. Before 1992, the grapes were sold to neighboring farms. The Schmelzer family, originally from Michigan, purchased Monte Bernardi in 2003. As winemaker, Michael has invested time, love and money in the vineyards, the winery and villa. The property was certified biodynamic in 2004.
This liter bottle is a celebration of Italy! It is a new style fashioning of the fiasco bottle, (remember those bottles in the straw basket?) The wine takes the party a step further by sourcing grapes from three different regions: Sangiovese and other Tuscany varieties, Montepulciano from Marche, and several varieties from Sicily—Frappatto, Nero d’Avola, and Nerello Mascalese. Since the liter bottle gives you an extra glass, enjoy over dinner with a group.

Conca d'Oro, Rose Prosecco Treviso NV
Regular price $18.00 Save $-18.00Variety: Glera and Pinot Nero
Fattoria Conca d’Oro loosely means “golden basin farm.” The winery has been around for generations with their own vineyards in the heart of the Strada del Prosecco, namely in the Valdobbiadene production zone, known as having the absolute best hillsides in the region for Prosecco winemaking. The winery is involved in each moment of the process beginning with tending to their vines, harvest, and production of these Prosecco wines.
The region of Veneto now allows for the production of "Prosecco Rosé" as the name of the wine and the winemaking appellation. The wine is done in the charmat method, different from Champagne, as it is done with the tank method. Glera, the traditional grape used for Prosecco production is blended with an additional 20% of the red variety Pinot Nero.

Grifalco, Aglianico del Vulture "Damaschito" 2016
Regular price $34.00 Save $-34.00Variety: Aglianico
Aglianico is famed as being the “big red grape” of southern Italy. The varietal has incredible aging potential and has a personality of its own: tannic, spicy and wild. There really is no other grape like Aglianico. Grifalco is owned by a former Tuscan wine family that decided to relocate to Basilicata and started to farm on the Volcano. I was first introduced to the wines at a wine show years ago and was incredibly impressed with the quality. After spending some time getting to know Cecilia Piccin, owner and winemaker, I knew these wines would always find a way into my personal cellar.
The “Damaschito” vineyard is something very special for Grifalco as it is a single parcel of soil that is different in color than the rest of the Volcano. The vines are over 40 years old and there is more iron and clay in that patch of earth, making the wines spicier and rounder. Truly one of my favorite Aglianicos.

E. Pira e Figli, Langhe Nebbiolo 2019
Regular price $45.00 Save $-45.00Variety: Nebbiolo
It would not be doing Chiara Boschis justice to say she is simply a great winemaker; she is a human of undeniable confidence, fortitude, and charm. This comes through in her wines as well. She concentrates primarily on the regional Nebbiolo grape while contrasting her family’s centuries of traditional male-dominated winemaking. Chiara takes a rebellious path, employing green harvesting, shorter fermentations, and the use of small French oak casks. The amount of new oak used on her cru Nebbiolos has decreased from 80% to 50%. Even her first wine, 1990 Barolo Riserva Cannubi was an incredible success. The winery became certified organic in 2014. Taking this a step further, she was able to convince 80% of the winemakers in the neighboring Cannubi to switch to organic as well!
The 2019 vintage of this wine is very special to Hart & Cru. Our content writer, Brittany, worked the 2019 harvest with Chiara in Barolo, helping to harvest Nebbiolo grapes from all the sites.
This Nebbiolo fruit was harvested from younger 15 year old vines in the Ravera di Monforte Cru at 450 meters elevation. This is fermented in steel, then goes on to age in French oak barrels (unlike other Barolo producers using Slavonian oak) for 14 months, and then another two months in the bottle. This drinks delicious now, but we also love this one with a little time in the cellar, too.

Cirelli, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 2021
Regular price $19.00 Save $-19.00Variety: Trebbiano
There is something to be said for believing whole-heartedly in something and building your entire life around that belief. Francesco Cirelli embodies that and lives off the land. He believes in a sustainable ecosystem and in leaving a place better than he found it. Agricola Cirelli is a fully functional organic farm using some modern techniques (think stainless steel) while simultaneously producing throw back wines in old clay amphora vessels and cement casks. These honest wines are indicative of the Mediterranean style, made in the Abruzzo region, seven miles from the Adriatic Sea.
Trebbiano, the queen of Abruzzo. The grapes see a short amount of time with their skins, and the rest of the winemaking happens naturally in stainless steel.

COS, Frappato 2021
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00Variety: Frappato
This Frappato comes from their estate vineyards in Vittoria from red clay soils. Fermentation and ageing is all done in cement with three months ageing in the bottle before its release. Frappato is one of Sicily’s native varieties, light bodied and almost Beaujolais-like.

Venica & Venica, Pinot Grigio Jesera 2020
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00Variety: Pinot Grigio
Daniele Venica purchased the plot Ronco del Ceró where he first planted Sauvignon in 1930. Three generations later, great grandson Giampaolo has taken over the estate, a true testimony to the tradition of keeping winemaking in the family. Venica now has 40 hectares all within the DOC—Denomination of Controlled Origin—of Collio. Sons Gianni (agronomist), Giorgio (cellar master), and grandson Giampaolo oversee operations supplemented by help from several family members. They believe their traditions must be enhanced through continuous research and innovation, but a relationship with nature is of utmost importance.
In the flood of bad Pinot Grigio around the world, there are a few producers that still care about the quality of mainstream grapes. This wine always shows perfume and texture, something that is lacking from most of the wines of Friuli. The grapes undergo 4-8 hours of skin maceration, imparting the coppery color often associated with the wines of this region.

G.D. Vajra, Barolo Albe 2018
Regular price $50.00 Save $-50.00Variety: Nebbiolo
The G.D. Vajra winery was created in 1972 by Aldo and Milena Vaira, initially from vineyards planted by Aldo’s father in 1947. The winery was named for Aldo’s father, Giuseppe Domenico Vajra, because at the time Aldo was not old enough to establish the winery in his own name. Today the family has 40 hectares under vine in Barolo and other surrounding appellations. Their prized holdings in Bricco delle Viole were planted in 1949 by Aldo’s grandfather. Milena and Aldo’s three children – Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro – are all involved in the family winery operation situated in the village of Vergne. The family is hard-working, passionate, and caring. Their focus is on building something for their children, caring about the community, and cementing the stories of the regions’ past. The family is longtime friends of Hart & Cru. They continue to uphold their passion for quality wine and the people who surround them.
Albe is an ode to the traditional Barolo, which was always blended from different vineyards. Its name Albe refers to the sunrise, indicating the three separate sunrises that take place over each vineyard with its unique sun exposure and elevation. Albe is aged in large Slavonian oak casks for 30 months and blended before its bottling.

Grifalco, Aglianico del Vulture "Gricos" 2019
Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00Variety: Aglianico
After over 20 years of making wine in Tuscany, Fabrizio and Cecilia Piccin went in search of a different location with ideal conditions to begin a new winery project. They settled on Basilicata, home of the Vulture volcano and ideal conditions for planting the Aglianico variety. They founded the Grifalco winery in 2004. Upon looking at the image of the bird on the bottle, one might think it was an image of a vulture; alas, it is not. The name “Grifalco” is a tribute to the family’s past and present. It combines the griffin, the symbol of the Piccin’s original home of Montepulciano in Tuscany, and the falcon, symbol of Monte Vulture, their adopted home. They make four wines; Gricos is their entry-level, Grifalco is their flagship, and the two cru bottles—Damaschito and Daginestra.
This is the flagship wine of Grifalco. Bearing that in mind, the Piccin family thinks that this wine is a representation of the region’s potential for Aglianico. The fruit is sourced from four different vineyards planted between 1980 and 1995.

Fratelli Alessandria, Langhe Nebbiolo Prinsiot 2020
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00Variety: Nebbiolo
Fratelli Alessandria is one of the stars of Verduno. The Alessandria family – owner Gian Battista, his wife Flavia, brother Alessandro, and son Vittore – lovingly produce a robust range of Piedmont specialty wines from start to finish. The farmer of the group, Gian’s philosophy is “the best wine comes from a great vineyard.” Located in the town of Verduno, in the commune of Barolo, the property has operated as a winery since the early 19th century. The wines were winning prizes as early as 1843. The original Alessandria brothers (fratelli) purchased the property in 1870. There is a deep understanding of how to work the vines in the marl soils they call “Sant’Agata,” a mixture of silt, limestone and sand. The Alessandria family first released their wine in 1978. Their style has always been classic, along with the grapes of the region; they never shifted towards a modernist hand.
This bottle is classified as Langhe Nebbiolo DOC and comes from three different vineyard sites. About one third of the vines are actually Nebbiolo from declassified Barolo vineyards in Verduno. Soils there are a mixture of limestone and clay with a high amount of limestone. The wine aged for ten months in older French and Slavonian casks, two months in tank and three months in bottle.

La Collina, Lambrusco Dell'Emilia Quaresimo
Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00Variety: Lambrusco Salamino, Maestri, Grasparossa, and Malbo Gentile
The Cooperative, La Collina, resides in Reggio Emilia, the heart of the Emilia Romagna. This region is home to Lambrusco, the tri colored Italian flag, and Parmigiano Reggiano! The story is unexpected; back in 1975, twelve young men joined minds and hearts to begin a cooperative of both agricultural ambitions and humanitarian efforts. The project was aimed to draw in those with drug problems, rehabilitate them through the rewards of biodynamic farming, and reap the benefits of incredible wine, cheese, and other produce. The winery is, in essence, a result of community collaboration far ahead of its time in the hills of Emilia Romagna.
This is a traditional pure expression of Lambrusco without the cloying sweetness. Enea uses frozen grape must to help kickstart the fermentation naturally, and boost the aromatics of the resulting wine. While this Lambrusco is definitely tart and fruity, the acidity and bubbles will stand up to charcuterie and pizza effortlessly.

Le Fraghe, Bardolino Chiaretto Rosato 'Rodon' 2021
Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00Variety: Corvina, and Rondinella
As a young girl, Matilde Poggi, grew up around winemaking and hearing her parents talk about it. During October, she would go straight from school to the vineyards to help with the harvest. Her first harvest was in 1984, prior to that, the grapes were sold to another winery. Matilde is passionate about the surrounding terroir of valleys, rivers, winds from the north, and the mountainous areas that makes her wines uniquely their own. Her 3 daughters now help her run the winery. They have been certified organic since 2009.
“Chiaretto” comes from the word chiaro, meaning pale or light, which describes this rose perfectly. Made mostly from the Corvina grape variety, and made in a style more reminiscent of a white wine, Rodòn is a well-loved rose representing the Bardolino Chiaretto style of Lake Guarda.
