Miroirs (Kenjiro Kagami), Jura Chardonnay 'Mizuiro' 2019
Variety : Chardonnay
Kenjiro Kagami founded Domaine des Miroirs in 2011, and in little more than a decade his wines have become some of the most cherished and elusive in the Jura. Originally an engineer for Hitachi in Japan, Kenjiro discovered wine in the late 1990s and became captivated by the idea of dedicating his life to it. He moved to Beaune to study winemaking and immersed himself in the traditions of France’s most revered cellars. His journey took him through stages with some of the country’s greatest vignerons, including Domaine Comte de Vogüé in Burgundy, Thierry Allemand in Cornas, Bruno Schueller in Alsace, and finally François Ganevat in the Jura. From each mentor he absorbed something unique: precision, patience, and an understanding of how a wine can carry the soul of a place.
Today, Domaine des Miroirs is just three hectares, carved into steep limestone slopes that demand both respect and careful attention. Kenjiro farms by hand, without pesticides or chemical inputs, following a no-till approach that preserves the living energy of the soil. He encourages biodiversity by planting native herbs and flowers among the vines, allowing the ecosystem to thrive naturally. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, fermentations occur spontaneously with native yeasts, and the wines rest patiently in old wood for four to five years before bottling. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is forced. The result is a philosophy built on restraint and trust, letting nature and time shape the wine.
Mizuiro is one of the most distinctive and sought-after expressions from Domaine des Miroirs. Crafted entirely from Chardonnay, the wine comes from a high-elevation site where thin, limestone-rich soils and abundant natural drainage give it its quiet precision and mineral backbone. The parcel’s name, “Mizuiro,” translates from Japanese to “pale blue,” a reflection of the serene light and energy of this part of the Jura.
