Saint Gayan, Gigondas 'Fontmaria' 2015
Regular price $50.00 Save $-50.00Variety: Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre
Domaine Saint Gayan is based in Gigondas where history dates back to Roman times. The Meffre family first planted vineyards in the 15th century; the same family continues this legacy while respecting the tradition six centuries later. The very high proportion of old vines (many up to 100 years) planted on poor clay, limestone soils results in lower yields and higher quality and concentration. Saint Gayan experiences a unique microclimate with no mist or mold due to “Le Mistral,” the haunting wind from the north that sweeps through the valleys at aggressive speeds. The climate is dry, yet reserves of water below ground compensate for lack of rain.
This wine is named in honor of Maria, the great grandfather of the current Meffrey generation of winemakers. He had purchased a great hill with a spring in the middle of it, which came to influence Domaine Saint Gayan ever since. “Maria” is a blend of mostly Grenache with a bit of Syrah in a traditional long ageing period of two years in wood with potential for a long cellaring life as well.
