Pian dell'Orino, "Piandorino" 2016Regular price $45.00 Save $-45.00
The winemakers of Pian dell’Orino are not natives to Tuscany, nor did they know one another before collaborating to make Sangiovese in Montalcino. Caroline was born in the Südtirol in a large Renaissance castle where she managed the family property. Amongst her duties at the property was an enormous, six hundred year-old grapevine that is the oldest and largest existing vine in all of Europe. Caroline’s partner, Jan, was born in the city of Karlsruhe in Germany, not far from the Pfalz region, studying both viticulture and oenology in Germany. He then worked for several years as an oenologist in France before meeting Caroline and moving to Montalcino. Together they grow purely Sangiovese.
The Piandorino bottling undergoes the same rigorous standards in the vineyard and cellar as the Rosso and Brunello. Things begin to change with the aging requirements; this wine ages for 18 months in a smaller barrel. Depending on the vintage, this Super Tuscan IGT bottle will be blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from their small plots.
