Pelican, Arbois Savagnin Ouille 2021
Variety: Savagnin
The Marquis d'Angerville is not only one of the most talented winemakers in Burgundy, he is also one of the most prestigious in his farming practices. Domaine du Pelican is actually a project in the almost isolated eastern region of Jura. After having been heavily inspired by Jura wine (more specifically a glass of Tissot Arbois Chardonnay ‘Les Bruyeres’ 2005) after thinking it was true white Burgundy, he sought to discover Jura for himself. The wines made at Pelican are by all means Jura, but with a Burgundian approach, as he does not use an oxidative style. The farming is all done with no chemicals and cellar work incorporates a pristine sense of detail.
The grapes for this wine are sourced primarily from the parcels named "Au Barby" and "Grand Curoulet” and grown in Jurassic ‘marl’ soil. Produced without the signature oxidative notes of traditional Jura wines and called Ouille to denote this, this savagnin acts something like a Burgundy chardonnay. Even so, this wine is still a Jura classic.
