Variety: Sangiovese

Montevertine is a landmark estate in Radda in Chianti. Founded in 1967 by Sergio Manetti, the winery became one of the first in Tuscany to produce Sangiovese without blending in white grapes, a move that challenged regional rules at the time and helped shape a new understanding of the grape. The estate sits at high elevation on galestro soils, a friable shale that supports deep roots, steady drainage, and naturally low yields. All farming is manual and avoids synthetic herbicides or chemical fertilizers.

The winery has remained family run since its founding. Over decades the Manetti family has maintained a consistent approach to vineyard work and cellar decisions. Fruit is harvested by hand, fermented with native yeasts in concrete tanks, and aged in a combination of large Slavonian casks and smaller French barrels. Long aging, careful selection, and precise attention to vineyard conditions have made Montevertine a reference point for pure Sangiovese from the hills of Radda. Critics regularly describe the estate as one of the most reliable and influential producers in Tuscany, with a long track record of wines that evolve steadily in bottle.

Il Duemilaventuno is a special cuvee produced only in selected years and represents a focused selection of high elevation Sangiovese from the estate’s core vineyards. These parcels sit on thin galestro soils that limit vigor and promote slow ripening. Vines are mature and picked entirely by hand with strict sorting in the field.

Fermentation occurs in concrete with native yeasts. The wine then moves to large Slavonian casks and smaller French barrels according to the needs of each lot. Elevage is guided by tasting rather than a fixed schedule. The cuvee is assembled from parcels that show the most complete development during aging and is released only when the estate believes it stands on its own as a separate bottling. Writers often highlight Il Duemilaventuno for the clarity of its vineyard material and its close connection to the principles that define Montevertine’s work. Among collectors it is viewed as a bottling that gives direct insight into the estate’s approach to Sangiovese and its continued importance in the region.
