Continuing the 7th generation of his family in the small village of Cornas in the northern Rhone, Matthieu Barret made an intentional choice to shake things up in both the vineyard and the cellar. There he realized his love for organic viticulture and that’s where it began. He stopped using machines in the vineyard, encouraged a diversified environment around the vines, and used fewer barrels in the cellar. His mediums of choice are classic in the region—Syrah for the reds and Roussanne with Viognier for the whites. Of all the French allocated wines, the price points as well as the wines themselves are fairly accessible.

The Syrah are all estate vines planted between 1920 and 2014 on granite soils. The juice is aged between terracotta and concrete over 18 months. This is truly a special bottle that rarely makes an appearance as these bottles just landed in Cincinnati and shows that Syrah can be fresh, juicy and drinkable right away!

If the name of this historic domaine doesn't give you a firm indicator of what you're in for, then take our word for it. It means 'domaine of the blood of the stones.' What makes the Southern Rhone truly thrive is not just the climate, but also the large rocks or galets, where the grape vines grow wildly. Ironically, Vacqueras became an appellation in 1990, right after producer Serge Ferigoule founded the estate. The timeliness couldn't have been better timed or deserved. He makes three wines and they are made to the absolute highest ability.

This Vacqueras gets named after one of each of Serge's three daughters every vintage and comes from 35-40 year old vines. The wine is typically aged in foudre barrels for six months. It could be drunk immediately, though time would do wonderful things for this bottle.

Maestracci, Vin de Corse-Calvi Clos Reginu 2020

In an area of the coast of France is the isle of Corsica, though there it’s called Corse. In the northwestern quadrant of the isle is the appellation of Corse Calvi. It’s an area known for its vines, olives, its location next to the coastline and the ‘Prove,’ the name of local maritime winds that cool down the vines from the high exposure to sunshine. The domaine began in 1945 when a large olive oil press had been abandoned, and Roger built a winery inside the thick walls of the press. Camille, the daughter of his son-in-law, now makes the wines. The whites are made into fresh and ready to drink styles while the reds are aged longer. Regardless of type, the wines are extremely food friendly.

This wine comes from the domain's youngest vines, some as young as five years old. In the mountain of Monte Grossu is the plateau of Reginu for which this bottle is named. The blend of varieties here are reminiscent of a southern Rhone style, as both these places share similar soils and climates.

Jamet, Cote Rotie 2018

The Jamet family winemaking story began in 1976 in the northern Rhone valley. Jean-Paul, just 16 years, began working with his father, Joseph. Together they’ve created a style of wine that has not just stood the test of time, but is unwavered in its style. In their terraced, rocky slopes, farming is often beyond difficult, but there wouldn’t be a better way to produce Syrah than in this method. While the tendencies of modern winemaking in this region stray towards more new oak and farming on flatter vineyards, they knew this would go against their style. A signature trait of their domain is the choice to blend fruit from multiple sites as they find this is the optimal way to showcase both Cote Rotie and Condrieu.

Vines range wildly from 5 to 85 years old coming from a range of 16 lieu dits across Cote Rotie. The wine undergoes whole cluster fermentation giving more texture and aging potential, as well as 22 months in multiple styles of barrels.

Stolpman Vineyards, ‘Great Places – August James’ Syrah 2020

Founded over 20 years ago by Tom Stolpman when he discovered hidden in the hills of California’s Central Coast a rare limestone outcropping unobstructed from the Pacific Ocean wind which became part of the now famous Ballard Canyon AVA. The winery is currently run by son Pete Stolpman and his wife Jessica. Known for employing their own crew "La Quadrilla", the vineyards are maintained only by hand with care and dedication.

This is a selection of the best syrah vines grown on the estate from an 8 acre parcel that is incredibly steep. The wine is a pre-clonal strain that were selected from 100+-year-old vines, which makes yields very small and the depth of terrior to be incredible. The vines are also planted at 6,000 vines per acre, which is very untraditional and the fruit must fight much hard to gain maturity, which creates incredible end results but very little fruit. This tight spacing makes the vineyard work 100% hand-done. The name of the wine is in homage to "Les Grandes Places" in Cote-Rotie Northern Rhone. The vision for this Stolpman label has been going since 2007.

Mickaël Bourg has often been compared to the legendary Thierry Allemand, who also makes wine with a cult following in the northern Rhone. In fact, Theo Allemand, his son, worked under Mika for a time, as his father thought it best for him to work for another superstar vigneron besides himself. Starting with just a half hectare of leased fruit, Mika now has 1.5 hectares of land which he now calls his own. While other vignerons in the village have ventured to make wine with fruit and power, Mika seeks an old time style of Syrah with restraint, elegance, and savoriness.

Cornas is a small village in the northern Rhone Valley where Syrah reigns king of the vines. The granite-forward soils here produce hearty, rugged wines, though in the correct hands can produce wines with complexity, elegance, and ageability.

Maesta Della Formica, meaning “majesty of the ant” is a relatively new producer founded in just 2013. After oenology and viticulture school at the University of Pisa, there began a common goal from two friends of growing Riesling in peaks of Tuscany. Along with this focus began a series of other international varieties, like those of Gamay and Syrah. The wines have very low intervention with marketing that is both playful and honest. Beyond the vines, they also cultivate other agriculture that do well in the high altitude areas of Tuscany, like chestnuts, juniper, and blackthorn.

Aromatics from a red Burgundy, spices you’d get from a Rhone red, and the soils of Tuscany and you’ll have the Gamo Rosso. This wine is all about its lightness and elegance while being versatile and food friendly.

Stolpman Vineyards, Sun & Earth 2019

Founded over 20 years ago by Tom Stolpman when he discovered hidden in the hills of California’s Central Coast a rare limestone outcropping unobstructed from the Pacific Ocean wind which became part of the now famous Ballard Canyon AVA. The winery is currently run by son Pete Stolpman and his wife Jessica. Known for employing their own crew "La Quadrilla", the vineyards are maintained only by hand with care and dedication.

Sun & Earth is a very special bottling that Peter and Ruben have released a small amount to Hart & Cru, not a normal bottling to see outside of the mailing list. This is an Estate wine from Rubens personal parcels behind the Solorzano family's house. This is his passion project of Ruben to create world-class wine, and he only has his vision influencing the wine. This is a very hands-off wine with low intervention in every aspect of farming and winemaking. It is co-fermented, with each variety going into the cement vats when the fruit is ready in the vineyard.

Winemaker Didier Barral is the thirteenth generation of the Barral family to grow grapes in the Faugères appellation of the Languedoc. His ancestors mostly grew grapes and made wine for family consumption. In 1993, Didier decided to implement estate bottling and commercialize the wines on a larger scale, and shortly thereafter decided to institute biodynamic practices. In France, he is widely regarded as one of the most important leaders in the biodynamic movement. In short, Didier shows that working his land is a life achievement, not just a task.

“Valinière” is the domaine’s top cuvée The wine is aged for two years, or sometimes longer in barrel, 10% of which is new. Mourvedre is often called an “iron first with a velvet glove,” and this takes that idea a step further.

Domaine Vieux Telegraphe, Chateauneuf du Pape 2015

Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the most famous wine regions in the world, and wouldn’t be this way without the Brunier family, (and a little help from importer Kermit Lynch) who helped pave the way for what this appellation has become today. Perhaps almost as epic as the Brunier family is the vineyard they’ve farmed for over 100 years called La Crau with the large stones, locally known as galets roules, covering the soil there. While the vineyard certainly exposes the vines to all the most undesirable climatic conditions, the terroir is desired for its altitude and ability to force the vines to struggle, thus making compelling wines.

Coming from the “Grand Cru” of the region, La Crau is the site for this fruit. The vines are 20 to 60 years old and exposed to Le Mistral, the name for the regional wind that is excellent at preventing rot. The wine ages in cement for ten months, then for twelve months in barrels before release. This can age for a number of years.

Poblets del Montsant, Montsant Tinto 2020

Brought to you by a couple of the exquisite minds behind Clos Figueras, Anne Cannan—daughter to wine exporter Christopher Cannan, and Miquel Compte, comes this passion project located in Montsant, just outside of Priorat. The vines are sourced from the Pinyana area of Montsant, where Miquel’s family owned vines, a place of rustic beauty with verdant forests covering jagged rocky formations. It is easy to see what inspired this project. Miquel is in charge of viticulture while Anne is in charge of winemaking. Their focus is red and white Grenache from old vines; French in style, but distinctly Montsant.

This is almost like a baby Priorat red. Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah come together from vines around 40 years in age. Ageing is completed for seven months in French and American oak casks. Paying homage to the style of the region, this Montsant is juicy and minerally.

Before Matthiew Dumarcher began his own project, he was working with high yielding, manipulated wines as an oenologist. It was this work that shaped the realization of his current project. He utilizes organic farming and old vines to make pure, fresh wine from the Rhone Valley. Over the years, his wines have found themselves in more restaurants than wine shops, solidifying their importance as food pairing wines. Just two wines are made: a Cote du Rhone and a Vin de France, both with low-intervention in the cellar.

This is taking the standard Cote du Rhone and giving it an elegant spin. The only thing big about this wine is the flavor; the wine has dialed back oak usage, alcohol, and is overall lighter on its feet.

Saint-Michel d'Esclans, Cotes de Provence Rose 2020

The land of Château d’Esclans dates back about 2500 years due to its significant coastal position. Winemaking began in the middle of the 19th century. After this, the estate changed ownership multiple times, though consistently making the iconic dry rose wines the Cotes de Provence is known for. There are 345 acres of vineyards devoted mostly to old vine Grenache followed by Cinsault and Merlot.

This rose is done in the traditional Provencal style; verging on full-bodied, mineral-driven, textural, and dry with the right amount of tart fruits. The wine is vinified in both larger barrels and stainless steel.

With a famed uncle, Robert Michel, as one of Cornas’ best growers, Vincent worked under his uncle for a couple vintages before venturing out on his own. He has just eight hectares of vineyards and only produces 2500 cases annually. He makes both “little wines,” which include his entry level bottles. He began making these to attract new customers after consistently running out of his Cornas and St. Joseph wines. Vincent believes that keeping the forests surrounding the appellation should be wild to influence the integrity of the vineyard’s ecosystem.

This Syrah comes from young vines in Crozes-Hermitage, but the wine gets classified as a “wine of the land” versus village level. This Syrah is a fresh affable style ageing for just nine months in tank, none in oak.

Many consider Reynard the greatest vineyard in all of Cornas; Geynale is a lieu dit within the Reynard site, though goes by its own name. Geynale also bears significance as Vincent’s great-grandfather, Paul Michel, planted this lieu dit back in 1910. Paul Michel is a household name among Cornas, and happens to be the same person who took Thierry Allemand under his wing. La Geynale is without a doubt Vincent’s top wine.

Two thirds of the juice is vinified in barrel, the rest in steel. The ageing is done in oak for about twelve months.

Anthill Farms, Syrah Peters Vineyard Sonoma Coast 2018

Anthill Farms is a group of three friends who went against all the odds to start a winery in California. They didn’t have money saved nor were they born into the business. They were cellar rats, the guys moving hoses and cleaning floors, for some pretty significant wineries, Williams Selyem being the most influential. However, while still quite young, the three decided to pull together a tiny amount of cash and started making wine at a crushpad facility. Before long the wines had a cult following and we’ve been drinking them ever since. Many of Anthill’s wines only make it to a mailing list or restaurants; we are lucky to include their small production wines.

In the western part of Sonoma County, close to the coast and the northern edge of the Petaluma Gap is the Peters Vineyard site farmed by none other than Randy Peters. Petaluma has the unique task of rushing cool air from the coast into this vineyard site where it stays cool and foggy. This site grows both Pinot Noir and Syrah for Anthill.

Every wine region in the world has its benchmark producers. These are the producers that year after year release top tier wines with a consistent voice that is evident in each bottle. These producers are an inspiration to younger producers throughout the world. Alain Graillot is a classic example, presiding over 50 acres of 30+ year-old vines in Crozes-Hermitage, just off the powerful hill of Hermitage in the Northern Rhone. Graillot has always focused on the pursuit of greatness. Quality comes first. He passed away in 2022, though his voice lives on with both of his sons, Antoine and Maxime, who picked up their father's torch back in 2008.

It is not enough to say that Isole e Olena is held to the highest regard and winemaker Paolo de Marchi has an unquestionable vision. Fourth generation winemaker Paolo De Marchi studied Agriculture at the University of Turin and worked harvests in California and France before returning to the family estate in 1976. He found much need for improvement and modernization in the Chianti Classico region. One of the first projects involved planting single vineyards of international varieties, such as Chardonnay and Syrah. With these steps, Paolo discovered a way to balance tradition with innovation. Isole e Olena is named for the formation of the two estates that were purchased by the De Marchi family in the 1950s. Over 43 years, he has earned a reputation as “Mr. Sangiovese” and also the “Dean of Chianti.”

This is a single vineyard Syrah which is one of the international varieties that Paolo de Marchi is known for planting. The Syrah is completely destemmed. This wine spends one year in both French and American oak, 25% of which is new. This is aged in bottle for two years before its release.

Alain Voge, Cornas "Les Vielles Fontaines" 2015

The wines of Domaine Alain Voge have helped to shape and evolve history of the northern Rhone appellation. Alain began working with his father at just seventeen years, deciding to remain in the Cornas region with his father’s vines. The wines were sold in barrels until the 50’s, then were transitioned to bottling in 1957-58. In the 60s, vineyards were lost due to new housing built; the Voge family then began renovating several higher parcels, which in turn proved as better conditions for vines. In an effort to learn more about other French wines, Alain would visit Leon every two weeks, meeting sommeliers and chefs who would introduce him to other regional wines. Doing this, he forged links with these professionals. Alain’s wines soon began appearing in some of the finest restaurants of Lyon and Paris. The domain became certified organic and biodynamic in 2016.

While all bottles from Alain Voge are special, this one is particularly a standout. Only made in exceptional vintages, this bottle comes from the locality of "La Fontaine" in Cornas. The vines are from a granite-dominated terroir that produces wines of intense complexity and age-ability. The Syrah is aged in large barrels for 24 months, some of this oak is new. Only 2400 bottles were produced.

The story of two brothers: even while still in high school, Eric was already collecting bottles of prized top dollar Burgundy and Chablis, hiding them under his bed when he started college. Lyle’s quest for knowledge landed him in Austria where he met one of his most important friends in the industry, sommelier Rajat Parr. After a decade of restaurant work, Eric returned to Santa Barbara to start his own project, Lieu Dit, inspired by the Loire. Older brother Lyle had also worn many hats in the industry, ultimately landing a job for one of the most esteemed importers Kermit Lynch, leading regional sales. After leading separate lives for some time, the brothers both felt a calling to merge their two paths, which is how Railsback Frères came to be born.

In the appellation of Santa Maria Valley of Santa Barbara is the famed, historic vineyard of Bien Nacido. Here the site is considered a cool climate area right next to the ocean while its position in the mountain range and range of soils allows for wines unlike anything else in California. This is Syrah with the ability to age gracefully.
