Lopez de Heredia is a true legend of Rioja. Founded in 1877 in Haro’s Barrio de la Estacion, the family has preserved its original methods for more than one hundred years. Fermentation still takes place in large oak vats, and the estate continues to maintain a full in house cooperage, one of the few remaining in Spain. Four generations of the family have overseen this work, keeping the bodega closely linked to the practices that shaped the early history of Rioja.
The estate farms several historic vineyards including Tondonia, Bosconia, Cubillo, and Gravonia. All are worked by hand with low yields and strict selection. Wines ferment with native yeasts in upright wooden vats and then age for extended periods in neutral American oak before long bottle rest in the deep cellars. These choices give the estate a reputation as a benchmark for classical Rioja. Writers often point to Lopez de Heredia as one of the region’s most important custodians of traditional winemaking.
Gravonia is sourced from the Zaconia vineyard, a site near the Ebro River planted entirely to Viura. The parcel sits on pale limestone and alluvial soils with steady drainage and open airflow. The vines have been tended by the estate for more than a century and remain trained in the traditional Rioja style. Harvesting is done by hand.
Fruit is pressed and fermented in large oak vats with native yeasts. The wine then ages for several years in seasoned American oak barrels and is racked by hand using the candle method, a technique maintained by the family since the bodega’s earliest years. The aim is to let the site evolve slowly and consistently so that each release reflects the vineyard’s long established character.

Hart & Cru is happy to engage the services of a common carrier on behalf of you/the customer. However, upon purchase, ownership of and title to all alcoholic beverages passes from Hart & Cru to you/the buyer in the State of Ohio. In the case of shipments outside of Ohio, the sole responsibility for complying with local regulations lies with the customer. By placing an order on this site and selecting shipping, you authorize Hart & Cru to act on your behalf to engage a common carrier to deliver your order to you.
All ‘Ground Shipping’ orders placed after 12pm on Wednesday will be shipped on Monday the following week in order to avoid bottles being held in non-temperature controlled facilities over the weekend. Orders placed before noon with 2-Day Air selected will be shipped the same day or on the date requested. We are happy to store your order for you until you are able to receive delivery. Please include note specifying desired ship date or reach out to us at thecru@hartandcru.com for any other requests.
The cost of shipping varies depending on which shipping option the buyer selects, as well as destination and number of bottles. The appropriate shipping rates will be calculated at checkout.
All orders will be sent with a 21+ signature as is legally required. The carrier delivering your order will be unable to leave the package on your front door, back porch, etc. without sign-off. Please ensure someone is home to receive. In the event that a shipment cannot be delivered due to an incorrect address provided by the purchaser, or after three delivery attempts by the carrier, Hart & Cru reserves the right to charge the purchaser the applicable carrier fee for rerouting to an alternative address or re-shipping to the same address.
