Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Romanee-St-Vivant 2022
Variety: Pinot Noir
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, often referred to simply as DRC, is one of the most celebrated and influential wine estates in the world. Based in the village of Vosne-Romanée in the Côte de Nuits, the domaine’s origins trace back to the 13th century when the Abbey of Saint-Vivant began cultivating vines on the slopes surrounding the village. The estate’s modern reputation was cemented in the 18th century when the Prince of Conti acquired the Romanée vineyard, giving it his name and elevating its prestige.
In 1869, Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet acquired Romanée-Conti and expanded holdings to include La Tâche, Échezeaux, Grands Échezeaux, Richebourg, and later Romanée-Saint-Vivant, building the foundation of today’s domaine. In the modern era, stewardship has been shared by the de Villaine and Leroy/Roch families, with Aubert de Villaine leading since 1974 and Perrine Fenal joining as co-director in 2018.
In 2007, the domaine adopted biodynamic viticulture across all holdings, focusing on soil vitality, biodiversity, and precision farming. With just over 28 hectares of exclusively Grand Cru vineyards—many of them monopoles—production remains extremely limited, making these wines among the most sought-after in the world. For collectors, sommeliers, and wine professionals, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti represents the benchmark for Burgundy, combining heritage, mastery, and an uncompromising pursuit of quality.
Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru
Romanée-Saint-Vivant comes from one of Vosne-Romanée’s most storied sites, once tended by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Vivant and long recognized for its finesse. DRC farms just over 5 hectares here, on slopes of fine limestone and clay that deliver a natural sense of lift and delicacy. The vineyard sits at a slightly cooler, sheltered position below Romanée-Conti itself, giving fruit of remarkable perfume and precision.
Farming remains fully biodynamic, with detailed work in the canopy and soils to preserve the vineyard’s quiet strength. Fermentations rely on native yeasts and gentle extraction to honor the site’s natural elegance. In 2022, this translates to a wine of silken structure with heightened aromatic purity, threading red fruit, spice, and floral depth through a long, graceful frame. Production is exceedingly small, and allocations reflect the vineyard’s historic rarity.
