The vines were planted in 1955 and make a Barolo with distinctive fruit and personality. The vineyard is from the family’s oldest plot dated back to 1955 in Serralunga d’Alba. The wine ages for two years in both French and Slavonian oak barrels before release.

Gaja is still among the most famed winemakers of the world today. Started by Giovanni Gaja in 1859, their legend is still going strong five generations later. Though each new member of the family brought with them a sense of excellence and attention to detail, it was really Angelo who brought the family name into the international spotlight, turning heads and garnering a reputation for pushing winemaking to new heights. Most notably is the family’s decision to use barrique with their 1975 Barbaresco cuvee at a time when everyone was using large barrels for aging. Taking this a step further, he began bottling many of his Nebbiolo as single vineyards, and crucial steps were made in the vineyard to yield better fruit. Today, Angelo carries on their commitment to excellence through their projects in Barolo, Barbaresco, and Tuscany.

Marchesi di Gresy, Barbaresco Martinenga 2018

Wild as it may seem, the Di Gresy family has owned their estate since 1797. For many years, it functioned as a farm, which of course, included grape vines. It wasn’t until the early 70s that the family decided to make and bottle their own wine, though it was common to sell the fruit. The family has 111 acres of vineyards between their estate vines, their most prized site having been owned since day 1. The ‘Matinenga’ site is a special one as it is quite large, and the family has begun to vinify different parcels within this site over the years. They continue to not only make some of the best wines from the most prized sites in Barbaresco, they continue to improve their winemaking to include what’s best for their surrounding environment.

Named for the family’s prized site that they’ve owned since the late 18th century, Martinenga is one of the most important single crus of the region. Vines are 35-40 years in age. The wine is aged between both French and Slavonian oak for a combined aging of two and a half years.

E. Pira e Figli, Barolo Via Nuova Chiara Boschis 2017

It would not be doing Chiara Boschis justice to say she is simply a great winemaker; she is a human of undeniable confidence, fortitude, and charm. This comes through in her wines as well. She concentrates primarily on the regional Nebbiolo grape while contrasting her family’s centuries of traditional male-dominated winemaking. Chiara takes a rebellious path, employing green harvesting, shorter fermentations, and the use of small French oak casks. The amount of new oak used on her cru Nebbiolos has decreased from 80% to 50%. Even her first wine, 1990 Barolo Riserva Cannubi was an incredible success. The winery became certified organic in 2014. Taking this a step further, she was able to convince 80% of the winemakers in the neighboring Cannubi to switch to organic as well!

Prior to 2009, Via Nuova was the common name of the vineyard behind Chiara’s cellar in Barolo. Under new wine law, the vineyard became known as Terlo. At this time, Chiara decided to stop producing Via Nuova as a single vineyard expression, and instead make it a classic Barolo blend from all of her plots; thus reiterating the name “Via Nuova” as the new way. The blending of several vineyard sites was common with Barolo producers until the 1960s, when the single vineyard bottlings took off. Ironically, “Via Nuova” represents the new way with a nod to old-time tradition.

Le Piane, Boca 2015

Variety: Nebbiolo and Vespolina

The vineyards of Le Piane hail from Boca, the highest elevation area of Piedmonte. A lengthy period abandoned after a period of heavy industrialization in the urban areas, they were finally rescued. Friends Christoph and Alexander fell in love with the property of Le Piane which included vines, barrels still filled with wine, and a dilapidated building. The last moving piece was convincing Antonio Cerri, one of the last standing winemakers in the Boca appellation, that they would continue to honor its ancient winemaking traditions. In his old age, Antonio gave over his small vineyard, cellar, and some old vintages. Alexander was sadly killed in 1998, but Christoph and his team carry on the dream today.

"Boca" is expressed through its minerality, high altitude, and grippy tannin. The fruit comes from old vines between 30-50 years in age. The aging process takes place over four years, three in barrels and one in the bottle. This wine has another 10-20 years for its fullest aging potential.

Arpepe, "Il Pettirosso " Valtellina Superiore DOCG 2016

In conversation with Italian winemakers, or vignaoioli if you will, Arpepe is arguably the best of the best. Wine publications don’t seem to disagree; the awards are countless. No wonder, given the amount of work and care that must go into the vines, grown on precariously-stacked terraces on the slopes of Valtellina, two hours north of Milan toward the Swiss border. Here, at these heights, Nebbiolo is known by another name, Chiavennasca. It grows in villages that might bring to mind Rosemary’s Baby – Sassella, Grumello, Inferno! The high-altitude, cool weather climate transforms the grape into something quite different than what you might find in neighboring Piemonte. While Barolo may be king, Valtellina is a wizard.

Nature has a way of making its voice heard when needed. Meaning “red-breasted robin,” one such bird flew into the cellar, landing on a barrel as if in warning. Upon tasting the wine, the family realized it was ready and didn’t need further ageing; thus, the dawn of wines that weren’t made into a Riserva. Made in special vintages, the wine ages in small barrels for 12 months, then ages in bottle for 24 months before release.

The G.D. Vajra winery was created in 1972 by Aldo and Milena Vaira, initially from vineyards planted by Aldo’s father in 1947. The winery was named for Aldo’s father, Giuseppe Domenico Vajra, because at the time Aldo was not old enough to establish the winery in his own name. Today the family has 40 hectares under vine in Barolo and other surrounding appellations. Their prized holdings in Bricco delle Viole were planted in 1949 by Aldo’s grandfather. Milena and Aldo’s three children – Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro – are all involved in the family winery operation situated in the village of Vergne. The family is hard-working, passionate, and caring. Their focus is on building something for their children, caring about the community, and cementing the stories of the regions’ past. The family is longtime friends of Hart & Cru. They continue to uphold their passion for quality wine and the people who surround them.

This Langhe Rosso is a mainstay of the Vajra family. It may be their flagship bottle as it is not only food friendly, but approachable to the masses and incredible value. The blend incorporates all the red varieties that Vajra does well while maintaining the identity of the Langhe region. Its ageing is just long enough in stainless steel and neutral oak to allow each variety to harmonize with the others.

Le Piane, Maggiorina Boca Vino Rosso 2020

The vineyards of Le Piane hail from Boca, the highest elevation area of Piedmonte. A lengthy period abandoned after a period of heavy industrialization in the urban areas, they were finally rescued. Friends Christoph and Alexander fell in love with the property of Le Piane which included vines, barrels still filled with wine, and a dilapidated building. The last moving piece was convincing Antonio Cerri, one of the last standing winemakers in the Boca appellation, that they would continue to honor its ancient winemaking traditions. In his old age, Antonio gave over his small vineyard, cellar, and some old vintages. Alexander was sadly killed in 1998, but Christoph and his team carry on the dream today.

“Maggiorina” is a true field blend of roughly 12 different varieties—mostly red with some white—planted across 25 small fields. The wine is aged in steel for just one year and is made to drink sooner rather than later. It’s fresh and fruity with a heap of spice on the finish.

The G.D. Vajra winery was created in 1972 by Aldo and Milena Vaira, initially from vineyards planted by Aldo’s father in 1947. The winery was named for Aldo’s father, Giuseppe Domenico Vajra, because at the time Aldo was not old enough to establish the winery in his own name. Today the family has 40 hectares under vine in Barolo and other surrounding appellations. Their prized holdings in Bricco delle Viole were planted in 1949 by Aldo’s grandfather. Milena and Aldo’s three children – Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro – are all involved in the family winery operation situated in the village of Vergne. The family is hard-working, passionate, and caring. Their focus is on building something for their children, caring about the community, and cementing the stories of the regions’ past. Bricco delle Viole is a significant vineyards as it is the highest and closest to the Alps, ranging from 400-480 meters. Its name means "hill of violets" referring to the blossoms at the top of the hill during the spring. The oak ageing takes place in large Slavonian casks for almost 32 months.

Their prized holdings in Bricco delle Viole were planted in 1949 by Aldo’s grandfather. Fratelli Alessandria is one of the stars of Verduno. The Alessandria family – owner Gian Battista, his wife Flavia, brother Alessandro, and son Vittore – lovingly produce a robust range of Piedmont specialty wines from start to finish. The farmer of the group, Gian’s philosophy is “the best wine comes from a great vineyard.” Located in the town of Verduno, in the commune of Barolo, the property has operated as a winery since the early 19th century. The wines were winning prizes as early as 1843. The original Alessandria brothers (fratelli) purchased the property in 1870. There is a deep understanding of how to work the vines in the marl soils they call “Sant’Agata,” a mixture of silt, limestone and sand. The Alessandria family first released their wine in 1978. Their style has always been classic, along with the grapes of the region; they never shifted towards a modernist hand.

San Lorenzo is a single cru of the commune of Verduno, where the Alessandria family estate dwells. The vineyard has a high altitude averaging 250 meters and vines average 25 years in age. The wine undergoes three years in Slavonian oak, two months in steel, and finally six months in bottle. The San Lorenzo is the epitome of floral tones and elegance.

The wine undergoes three years in Slavonian oak, two months in steel, and finally six months in bottle. We were fortunate to have visited this vineyard during harvest season several years back.

As with many brilliant minds, the brilliance is contained within the mind of the genius; this could not be more true for Bruno. His career lasted from 1968 until his untimely death in 2018. He created an infinite number of famous wines during this time. For a region dominated by a lengthy history of male winemakers, the Giacosa legend continues with the pleasant turn of his daughter, Bruna, taking over the domain. These are very much allocated wines, representing some of the last vintages that he would have had his hands on before he passed.

The Asili bottle is a single cru Barbaresco that Bruno began bottling back in 1967, yet it was the only cru that was made more than once of all his wines. With the rise of estate bottlings in the 1990s, Bruno opted to purchase some vineyards from Asili instead of relying on purchased fruit. Asili is associated with being one of the most prized vineyard sites in Barbaresco, in addition with its ties to the Giacosa name.

Carlo Nada bought the Rombone farm, located in the Treiso commune of Piedmont, in 1921. He immediately planted vines and began to produce wine. Only one of his seven children, Fiorenzo, caught Carlo’s passion for wine. Initially, Fiorenzo discontinued his father’s winemaking business, focusing instead on selling grapes to local merchants. Fiorenzo’s son Bruno convinced his father to return to the winemaking business, and in 1982 they launched Azienda Agricola Nada Fiorenzo. Fourth generation Danilo Nada was born into a thriving winegrowing business.Nada Florenzo first got serious recognition in 1987 when Slow Wine took notice of the quality that was produced. Today, 80-something Fiorenzo is still involved in working the vineyards. Bruno is head winemaker, while Danilo is learning the business alongside his father and grandfather.

The “Seifile” is at once silky and rich, well-balanced and structured for aging. Acidity is bright and expressive. Flavors of dark fruit and tar mark its provenance from the Treiso commune in Barbaresco territory.

Variety: Nebbiolo grapes from the Barolo Albe DOCG are the base, with the addition of thirty herbs, peel and roots of plants, including Cinchona bark (quinine) which is where the Chinato gets its name.

The G.D. Vajra winery was created in 1972 by Aldo and Milena Vaira, initially from vineyards planted by Aldo’s father in 1947. The winery was named for Aldo’s father, Giuseppe Domenico Vajra, because at the time Aldo was not old enough to establish the winery in his own name. Today the family has 40 hectares under vine in Barolo and other surrounding appellations. Their prized holdings in Bricco delle Viole were planted in 1949 by Aldo’s grandfather. Milena and Aldo’s three children – Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro – are all involved in the family winery operation situated in the village of Vergne. The family is hard-working, passionate, and caring. Their focus is on building something for their children, caring about the community, and cementing the stories of the regions’ past. The family is longtime friends of Hart & Cru. They continue to uphold their passion for quality wine and the people who surround them.

Nebbiolo grapes comes from the historic Bussia cru north of Monforte d'Alba. The Fantinos are blessed with some of the oldest vines in the Barolo area; all their vines were planted in 1946 and 1947 by Alessandro and Gian Natale Fantino. Barolo wine is used for the base, with the addition of herbs and roots of plants, including Cinchona bark (quinine) which is where the Chinato gets its name. The herb sources remain a family secret. This is an aromatized wine, complex and herbal with a long finish. It is the ideal digestivo after a heavy meal.

In conversation with Italian winemakers, or vignaoioli if you will, Arpepe is arguably the best of the best. Wine publications don’t seem to disagree; the awards are countless. No wonder, given the amount of work and care that must go into the vines, grown on precariously-stacked terraces on the slopes of Valtellina, two hours north of Milan toward the Swiss border. Here, at these heights, Nebbiolo is known by another name, Chiavennasca. It grows in villages that might bring to mind Rosemary’s Baby – Sassella, Grumello, Inferno! The high-altitude, cool weather climate transforms the grape into something quite different than what you might find in neighboring Piemonte. While Barolo may be king, Valtellina is a wizard.

Local dialect for “rock” comes out as Sassella, for it is here that the slopes are rockiest and steepest. The wine, spending 50+ days on skins, has a remarkable minerality. A wine that does well with age, 2010 is a good find.

Translation works not only with languages, but with terroir to bottle. Grumello, where the topsoil is a bit deeper than in the other two villages, has softer ground, producing a softer, less angular wine. Its roundness renders it ready-to-drink, but its elevation keeps it age-worthy.
