Variety: Nebbiolo

When it comes to Barolo producers, it’s about the unique combination of both the people and the vines. When it comes to the Fantino family, brothers Alessandro and Gian head the current generation, and they have some of the most enviable ancient vines in Barolo planted back in 1946. The brothers keep up the care of these vines, though rather labor intensive, in the historic zone of Bussia. They not only make the trademark Nebbiolo, but also continue making the classic Nebbiolo Passito and Barolo Chinato that are unfortunately disappearing. Their wines, while they do age well, are known to be drunk well young.

A serious bottle with a funny story. The Fantino brothers were late in submitting their Barolo Riserva for its classification, and opted to go along with the mishap by bottling their wine as a mere ‘Vino Rosso’ and a tongue in cheek label. The fruit comes from 60 year old vines and is aged in Slavonian oak for 5.5 years and another year in bottle before release; a Riserva at the core.
