Fourrier, Gevrey-Chambertin Vieille Vigne 2023
Variety: Pinot Noir
Domaine Fourrier, located in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, is one of the region’s most revered and sought-after producers. With a winemaking lineage dating back to the 1930s, the domaine has been helmed by Jean-Marie Fourrier since the mid-1990s, following training under legendary mentor Henri Jayer and a formative stint at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon. Jean-Marie’s return marked a generational shift and a meticulous refinement of the estate’s practices. His vision centered on expressing terroir with purity, achieved through careful vineyard management, minimal intervention in the cellar, and an uncompromising commitment to fruit quality.
Fourrier’s holdings are modest in scale but exceptional in pedigree, including enviable parcels in premier cru sites like Clos St. Jacques, Combe Aux Moines, and Goulots, as well as village-level Gevrey-Chambertin and a rare plot in Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru. Most vines were planted between the 1920s and 1940s, and Jean-Marie’s refusal to use young vine fruit in his top cuvées ensures a level of depth and complexity that is unmistakable. Fermentations are carried out with native yeasts, and new oak is used sparingly—typically around 20%—to allow the character of each site to shine through.
The wines of Domaine Fourrier are prized for their transparency, elegance, and astonishing ability to age, making them a touchstone for collectors and sommeliers worldwide. Allocations are fiercely limited, with demand far outstripping supply, especially in mature vintages. Despite—or perhaps because of—their restraint and finesse, Fourrier’s wines possess an almost cult-like status among Burgundy connoisseurs. This combination of rarity, historical vineyard material, and an uncompromising winemaking philosophy places Domaine Fourrier among the most important and iconic producers in all of Burgundy.
The wine is made from Pinot Noir vines planted between 1928 and 1955, harvested by hand, and fermented using only native yeasts after a natural cold soak. Aging takes place over nearly two years in neutral oak, with no fining or filtration. Just purity and patience. It’s this uncompromising, transparent method that has made Fourrier a benchmark for Burgundy lovers around the world.
