The Lescure Domaine is among the newer winemaking families, but just as fierce. Chantal Lescure was begun in 1975 by Chantal and her husband Xavier. They claimed 18 hectares of land strewn throughout across Chambolle-Musigny in the Cote de Nuits and the Volnay in Cote de Beaune. Today their two sons coordinate the running of the estate. The Domaine takes organic farming very seriously, as they have been practicing full organics since 2000; they're even certified by Ecocert.

This is an entry level wine coming from Chantal Lescure, a Bourgogne Rouge to showcase what they can do, even with looser restrictions than their other bottles. The grapes for Bourgogne "Les Taupes Maison" come from Pommard; a sort of declassified example of Pommard village Pinot Noir.

Pierre Girardin, Bourgogne Rouge 'Eclat de Calcaire’ 2018

It’s rare that a Burgundy winemaker has success on just their first vintage, but Pierre Girardin has defied all odds. Even with the first, there was a distinctive voice to the wines not often seen so early in a winemaker’s career. Working in the cellar almost from the time he could walk, he is now the 13th generation of his family making wine. Even though Girardin senior sold the domain in 2011, he kept 4.5 hectares of his best plots to pass on to Pierre. Beyond the domain wines, Pierre continues to purchase from growers who share the same views.

‘Eclat de Calcaire’ comes from vines in the Pommard appellation made from “limestone shards.”

Francois Lumpp, Bourgogne Rouge La Paulee 2016

François Lumpp is technically a second-generation winemaker in the Côte Chalonnaise, which is perhaps the least well-known of all Burgundy regions. He and his brother inherited a vineyard from their father in the 1970s. But by 1990, he was ready to put a stake in his vision of a top quality and site-specific vineyard in Givry. (There are no grand cru vineyards in Givry, so premier cru is the top classification.) François and his wife Isabelle planted and nurtured all of the vines on about 9 hectares of vineyard property. He is a true vigneron, making only Pinot Noire and Chardonnay wines from Givry from 11 of the best premier cru parcels – a rare business model in today’s modern Burgundy where big négociant firms and outside investors rule the day in the big, well-known regions of the Côte d’Or. Son Pierre and daughter Anne-Cécile have joined the family business.

This domain flies under the radar in the Givry village of Côte Chalonnaise, which is possibly the least familiar subregion of Burgundy. Making this wine from vines Francois nurtured himself, La Paulée delivers Premier Cru quality while maintaining the Bourgogne Rouge status.

Paul Pillot, Santenay Vieilles Vignes 2018

Thierry Pillot is the fourth generation of the Pillot legacy in the legendary Côtes de Beaune of southern Burgundy. Even though the domain began with Thierry’s great grandfather—Jean-Baptist —the domain was named after Paul Pillot—Thierry’s father. Jean-Baptiste was a barrel maker by trade and began focusing on his vines full time in 1900; the estate was born then. Today the estate is run by the energetic Thierry, who spends most of his time in the vineyards, but is a non-interventionist in the cellar with discreet usage of new wood. The family are artists in the cellar when it comes to oak usage; it is very well integrated into the wines. Thierry is one of the finest winemakers in the Côtes de Beaune; if one should come across any of his bottles, don’t hesitate to snatch them up.

Perhaps Hart and Cru’s favorite of the Bourgogne Rouge lineup. This Bourgogne Rouge comes from 40+ year old vines from the Chassagne side of Santenay.

Bernard Defaix, Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2018

The Defaix family is a fourth generation of a family of vine-growers rich in personality. Bernard Defaix started the vineyard in 1959 with 2 ha. Vineyard holdings across the Chablis region of Burgundy have expanded to 27 ha including three Premier Cru vineyards (Côte de Léchet, Vaillons and Lys) and others in the Chablis and Petit Chablis appellations. Bernard’s sons Sylvain and Didier have been managing the domain for about twenty years, handling winemaking and vineyard operations, respectively. Didier’s wife, Helene, handles administration and sales. Although this is a small property – common in France – the Defaix family undertook an extensive study of their vineyard soils to better understand vine root systems and the impact of mechanized vineyard operations. From 2012, they have been producing organic wines.

This is an approachable Pinot Noir classified as an AOC Bourgogne Rouge bottling. The vines come exclusively from a vineyard in Auxerre, which is just outside of Chablis. It is simply aged in 2-3 year old barrels to optimize the freshness of the fruit. This is a wine to drink now and with all manner of food.
