The WINE

G.D. VAJRA
N.S. Della Neve, Extra Brut, Metodo Classico Rosato NV
Piedmont, Italy

The G.D. Vajra winery was created in 1972 by Aldo and Milena Vaira from vineyards planted by Aldo’s father in 1947. Today the family has 40 hectares under vine in Barolo and other surrounding appellations. Milena and Aldo’s three children – Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro – are all involved in the family winery operation situated in the village of Vergne. Thomas Jefferson is the unlikely inspiration for this bottle. As the ambassador to France a noted wine connoisseur, Jefferson often traveled through Piedmont. During one of his visits, he encountered a sparkling Nebbiolo and proclaimed that it was ‘as brisk as Champagne.’ The Vajra family decided to expand on this by making a wine with both Nebbiolo and the Champagne grape of Pinot Noir. Aged for 48 months, over three times the minimum aging requirement for Champagne, this bottle both challenges and pays homage to the established and highlights the power and versatility of noble Nebbiolo. This bottle is named for the chapel that sits on the slopes of the vineyards: “Nostra Signora Della Neve” or “Our Lady of the Snow.”
