Cati is an anomaly in the world of natural wine. Not only is she one of two female winemakers on the island of Mallorca, she is also just one of three natural winemakers in a place where winemaking is difficult. While many use the international varieties like Cabernet and Syrah to make their wines noticed by the world, Cati made a firm decision to use indignenous varieties that are lighter in style, reflecting the terroir of Mallorca. It shows just how focused Cati is as she not only is a single mother with a winery to run, additionally she flew back and forth from Barcelona to Mallorca daily while training as a somm. Her work ethic is unparalleled.

The Escursac grape variety was only just revived in 2006 in Mallorca after years and years of having been wiped out by phylloxera. The fruit is a combination of both estate and purchased fruit. The wines ages between steel, amphora, and used French oak barrels.

Variety: Merlot and Cabernet Franc

This legendary Bordeaux winemaking family has been growing vines in Pomerol for so long that the current generation doesn’t even know when they were acquired. Today Claire Laval runs the estate; she is one of two women in Pomerol that have been inducted into the male-dominated Confrerie des Hospitaliers de Pomerol. It almost doesn’t matter that the wines of Pomerol don’t have a classification as the local standards are rather high and other vignerons are well aware of Gombaude-Guillot's quality. Even local Allier oak is thoughtfully used for the wine barrels.

This Right Bank blend is mostly Merlot with the remaining 15% being Cabernet Franc. Local Allier oak is used for aging, generally 50% of the oak of which is new.

Jean Paul is a fourth generation winemaker just outside of Nantes in the region of Muscadet. He aims to make highly mineral-driven and dry whites, typical of the region, though he keeps the wines fermenting until the end to reiterate this style. While he does make wines traditional to his heritage and region, he has also begun experimenting with some skin contact and sparkling.

It’s still sort of Muscadet, but made into a soft minerally pet-nat.

Kate Norris and Thomas Monroe began Division Wine Co. back in 2012. It is a company based in Portland while fruit is spruced from multiple vineyards throughout the Willamette Valley. They both have lived and worked all over with overlapping gigs in the regions of Burgundy, Loire, and Beaujolais. Their mindset is a simple one—to make well-made unpretentious wine inspired by their passions from the classic regions of France all while paying respect to both farming and minimal winemaking. They work with small growers in the Willamette, often leaning towards their favorites, Chenin Blanc and Gamay. Their wines ought to demand higher price points for their quality, though for now we should simply snatch them up.

“Gala” comes from the Jubilee vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills zone of the Willamette. It’s Beaujolais, but Oregon. It’s aged for a few months in older barrels and released immediately.

Benoit is a 5th generation winemaker turning to very innovative and anything-but-conventional methods at his family domaine. The conversion to organics and biodynamics aside, his vineyard practice employs horses and aromatherapy, and to walk around the cellar you’ll find barrels painted purple and small Buddhas perched as if to watch over the room. It is easy to tell he takes great care in every step of what he does, in hopes, and execution, of finding balance not just in his winemaking, but also in life.

Hervé Jestin, the former cellar master to Duval-Leroy, has partnered up with Benoit Marguet in this special bottling, which is actually a separate brand. Operating as a consultant, Jestin has influenced both his biodynamic farming and natural wine practices in Marguet’s wine. The wine is sourced from the village of Ambonnay and made into a Brut Nature style. It ages on its lees for nine years before it is released.

This is as small as it gets when it comes to a winemaking entity; there are no other employees working their vineyards other than family members themselves. Vines are sourced from three different coveted appellations in the Cote de Beaune; the villages of Beaune, Pommard, and Meursault. This is as small as it gets when it comes to a winemaking entity; there are no other employees working their vineyards other than family members themselves. Oriol Artigas "Sammay" Negre 2021

Variety: Trepat

The wines of Oriol Artigas only just begun in 2011 in the quite small DO of Alella located outside of Barcelona. After falling into wine doing a harvest nearby, realized that his work would no longer take place in a laboratory, but rather in pursuit of making wine. He and several other winemakers banded together to revive the vines of Alella, a place that was well on its way to extinction, though experienced a turn around due largely in part to Oriol’s efforts. His work ethic is focused and humble. Farming is done in a biodynamic fashion, sulfur is never used, and most of the aging is completed in steel. The wines are Mediterranean in nature, reflecting not just his homeland, but also the nearby sea.

Trepat, a variety typically seen in sparkling rose Cava stands on its own as a light and playful still red. The wine undergoes some whole cluster fermentation, aging simply in steel before it is ready to be drunk immediately.

Stratum Jumilla, 'Matas Altas' 2020

Variety: Monastrell

Believe it or not, this is our first wine we’ve carried from the region of Jumilla in Spain. Stratum Wines have a significant sense of place and with a keen sense of farming. This is a fourth generation winemaking family who never had to graft their vines after the phylloxera epidemic in Europe. The average age of their vines is 70 years. Their medium is mostly Monastrell in this part of Spain. As this variety unfortunately is known for making big mass-produced styles of wine, it’s refreshing to see that the Cerron is focusing on quality and maintaining the upkeep of their old vines.

Monastrell vines were planted between 1911 and 1967. The altitude of this site is around 900 meters in elevation. While the blend is mostly Monastrell, 10% of the wine comprises a field blend coplanted in the same old vineyard sites.

Cati Ribot "Son Llebre" Blanc 2020

Cati is an anomaly in the world of natural wine. Not only is she one of two female winemakers on the island of Mallorca, she is also just one of three natural winemakers in a place where winemaking is difficult. While many use the international varieties like Cabernet and Syrah to make their wines noticed by the world, Cati made a firm decision to use indignenous varieties that are lighter in style, reflecting the terroir of Mallorca. It shows just how focused Cati is as she not only is a single mother with a winery to run, additionally she flew back and forth from Barcelona to Mallorca daily while training as a somm. Her work ethic is unparalleled.

This is a blend of indigenous grapes from outside the family’s bodega. The fruit is aged both in amphora and stainless, as well as seeing a couple hours of skin contact. The wine is done completely naturally.

Bertrand-Delespierre, Champagne 1er Cru Brut Enfant de La Montagne - 1.5L

This relatively new Champagne winemaking family only just planted roots in 1980 in the Montagne de Reims. The names come from both the husband and wife who began this domaine, Didier Bertrand and Chantal Delespierre. The second generation has been spearheaded by their children, Adrien and Clemence. With their generation, they look to lower dosage (sugar) levels, which only continues to highlight the lands with which they work. They work with 24 hectares in over four Premier Cru villages. For making just 5000 cases a year from prized vineyards, the value for these grower Champagnes is absolutely insane.

Using all three of the main Champagne varieties, fruit for this comes from all the Premier Cru villages they work with. Most of the wine comes from 2017 with the other 40% coming from other vintages. Their wine ages for a minimum four years on its lees before it’s released. ‘Enfant de la Montagne’ translates to ‘Infant of the Mountain.’

In an area of the coast of France is the isle of Corsica, though there it’s called Corse. In the northwestern quadrant of the isle is the appellation of Corse Calvi. It’s an area known for its vines, olives, its location next to the coastline and the ‘Prove,’ the name of local maritime winds that cool down the vines from the high exposure to sunshine. The domaine began in 1945 when a large olive oil press had been abandoned, and Roger built a winery inside the thick walls of the press. Camille, the daughter of his son-in-law, now makes the wines. The whites are made into fresh and ready to drink styles while the reds are aged longer. Regardless of type, the wines are extremely food friendly.

This wine comes from the domain's youngest vines, some as young as five years old. In the mountain of Monte Grossu is the plateau of Reginu for which this bottle is named. The blend of varieties here are reminiscent of a southern Rhone style, as both these places share similar soils and climates.

This is Vermentino at its best. It’s a variety that is entirely well suited to Mediterranean sunshine and its proximity to the water. It picks up an opulent texture and salinity that goes swimmingly with all sorts of seafood and olive oil based dishes. This one aged in steel before it is released immediately.
