Donkey & Goat, Pinot Gris Ramato Filigreen Farm Anderson Valley 2019
Regular price $36.00 Save $-36.00Variety: Pinot Gris
In short, Jared and Tracey Brandt of Donkey and Goat Winery are pioneers of the natural winemaking movement in California. After spending time in France back in 2002 with noteworthy winemaker Eric Texier, they returned home to Cali, inspired and ready to apply their inspirations in winemaking and marketing. Using a completely natural process in the cellar and vineyards; the couple does not fine or filter the wines, and just a small amount of sulfur is used at bottling. Their winemaking headquarters are located in Berkeley where they can implement their hands-on approach; they source grapes from Sierra Nevada, Mendocino, and Napa.
Pinot Gris, or Pinot Grigio, has many shades. In the northern areas of Italy, like Friuli, “Ramato” was a method of using skin contact to impart texture, color, and richness to the Pinot Grigio. This grape variety is unique in that it is “grey” in color on the vine, but can produce a strikingly orange-hued juice. This bottle comes from purely free-run juice to make for a softer wine. It’s like biting into a tart apricot with the funk you’d expect from an orange wine while delivering the quirkiness of Donkey and Goat. Fun fact: ramato is Italian for a red-haired person.

BloodRoot Wines, Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2018
Regular price $35.00 Save $-35.00Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
Bloodroot is a new project spearheaded by Noah and Kelly Dorrance, who we also know from the Banshee and Reeve Wines project. The winemaking couple have continued networking with other northern California growers. The Bloodroot project is a simple one: to round up value-driven wine and talented growers that result in wines that are drinkable and approachable. A sum of all its parts; the wines represent some of California’s soulful terroir.
This Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Napa Valley vineyards from a “secret collaboration” of winemakers. The wine is an ode to the olden times of Napa, bringing forth a sense of balance and drinkability.

Anthill Farms, Syrah Peters Vineyard Sonoma Coast 2018
Regular price $38.00 Save $-38.00Variety: Syrah
Anthill Farms is a group of three friends who went against all the odds to start a winery in California. They didn’t have money saved nor were they born into the business. They were cellar rats, the guys moving hoses and cleaning floors, for some pretty significant wineries, Williams Selyem being the most influential. However, while still quite young, the three decided to pull together a tiny amount of cash and started making wine at a crushpad facility. Before long the wines had a cult following and we’ve been drinking them ever since. Many of Anthill’s wines only make it to a mailing list or restaurants; we are lucky to include their small production wines.
In the western part of Sonoma County, close to the coast and the northern edge of the Petaluma Gap is the Peters Vineyard site farmed by none other than Randy Peters. Petaluma has the unique task of rushing cool air from the coast into this vineyard site where it stays cool and foggy. This site grows both Pinot Noir and Syrah for Anthill.

Campbell Ranch Vineyard is a short way from the Pacific and farmed by Steve Campbell. At 750 feet above sea level, this site sits on the very edge of the residual marine layer from the Pacific. It’s another of the Anthill Farm’s choices for a cool coastal, late-ripening style. The vines are about twenty years old, low yielding, sitting atop Goldridge soil. This site farms both Pinot Noir and Syrah for Anthill Farms.

Soter North Valley Vineyards, Pinot Noir Reserve Willamette Valley 2016
Regular price $57.00 Save $-57.00Variety: Pinot Noir
After 25 years as a consulting winemaker in Napa, Tony and wife/partner Michelle uprooted to move to the Yamhill-Carlton area in the late 90’s to focus on family and Soter Vineyards. The estate is named Mineral Springs Ranch, a woodland and grazeland oasis, furthering their dedication to winemaking. The couple is convicted in their beliefs of organics, biodynamics, and environmentalism—this is exhibited in their farming practices and on-site kitchen. While Soter Vineyards focuses on estate sites, the North Valley project focuses on the region, using “cru” worthy Pinot Noir sites while implementing the fine art of blending. Yamhill-Carlton is one of the major appellations in the Willamette Valley, Oregon.
Since this is a regional wine, the fruit is sourced from Yamhill-Carlton, Ribbon Ridge, Eola-Amity, and Dundee Hills; a tour of the region. The wine sees 40% new oak.

Presqu'ile Winery, Syrah Presqu'ile Vineyard Santa Maria Valley 2016
Regular price $40.00 Save $-40.00Variety: Syrah
According to Matt Murphy, co-founder, and president of Presqui’le winery, the greatest wineries are multigenerational family endeavors. In fact, the family is very close and loves doing things together, including his sister Anna, the enologist. Anna and Matt both grew up around the family’s farm in Louisiana, which was the forerunner for their interest in winemaking. Dieter Cronje, winemaker for Presqu’ile, has quite the prestigious resumé. While on a mission to gain a more global perspective, he did an exchange program with the University of Bordeaux and traveled extensively through Burgundy and Champagne to gain more understanding of Pinot Noir. After working with Matt Murphy at the Ambullneo winery and sharing many late-night bottles of Burgundy, they realized they worked well together. Matt then decided that Dieter would be a great fit as winemaker for Presqu’ile.

Hirsch Vineyards, Pinot Noir Reserve Sonoma Coast 2016
Regular price $100.00 Save $-100.00Variety: Pinot Noir
Stand above the fog line and glimpse the power of the Pacific at 1500 ft. elevation and you’ll begin to understand what attracted David Hirsch to his extreme site back in 1980. Hirsch was not born into the wine world. Rather he was a lover of pinot noir, more specifically Burgundy, to which I can very much relate. Buying and selling textiles between the US and France, he reached a turning point. The lure of a quiet farm life with his family brought him to Fort-Ross Seaview, on the Sonoma coast, just three hours from San Francisco. The property sits on a ridgeline, cleared of redwoods and fir trees with a climate that is incredibly coastal. Straddling the San Andreas Fault, the soils are intensely complex. Most world class vineyard sites are known for only having a few soils. Hirsch, on the other hand, has 44 different soil types. It should come as no surprise that this is one of the most expressive and important vineyards in the US.
David Hirsch dreamed for many years of making a reserve pinot noir from his vines. Since our first "Reserve" in 2009, the family has endeavored to capture the most complete and powerful expression of the Hirsch Vineyard through selecting its very best and oldest vineyard blocks for this wine.

Hirsch Vineyards, Raschen Ridge Estate Pinot Noir 2016

Raschen Ridge is made from the highest elevation vineyards at Hirsch. Even though Hirsch founded the vineyard in 1980, he did not make “Raschen Ridge” a single vineyard bottling until 2014. This came from years of observation and patience at which point the realization solidified. In this area of Sonoma Coast, you find many ironies: wet winters and dry summers, ocean and desert climate, dripping rainforest and parched pasture.

David Hirsch began planting the East Ridge in 1990. It is a topographically distinct microsite within the Hirsch Vineyard, sloping steeply into an eastern canyon. Fog gathers in the canyon at night; and during the day, the cool ocean breezes circulate amongst the vines. However, it is often the first place the fog burns off in the morning, making it a relatively warmer site compared with the rest of Hirsch.

Railsback Freres, Bien Nacido Vineyard Syrah “Sans Soufre” 2018
Regular price $50.00 Save $-50.00Variety: Syrah
The story of two brothers: even while still in high school, Eric was already collecting bottles of prized top dollar Burgundy and Chablis, hiding them under his bed when he started college. Lyle’s quest for knowledge landed him in Austria where he met one of his most important friends in the industry, sommelier Rajat Parr. After a decade of restaurant work, Eric returned to Santa Barbara to start his own project, Lieu Dit, inspired by the Loire. Older brother Lyle had also worn many hats in the industry, ultimately landing a job for one of the most esteemed importers Kermit Lynch, leading regional sales. After leading separate lives for some time, the brothers both felt a calling to merge their two paths, which is how Railsback Frères came to be born.
The Railsback brothers continue their love for French varieties in this northern Rhone inspired bottle. This Syrah comes from the steepest block of the Bien Nacido vineyard in the heart of the Santa Maria Valley. Even though the site is celebrated for Pinot Noir, the brothers were more excited at the prospect of growing Syrah there. As a Rhone Syrah would be made, this one goes through mostly whole cluster fermentation to give the wine more grip and all around texture. This is bottled “Sans Soufre,” meaning without the addition of sulfur. It will age for 17 months in neutral French oak barrels. Just 207 cases were made.

Jolie Laide, Gamay Noir El Dorado 2019
Regular price $33.00 Save $-33.00Variety: Gamay Noir
Scott Schultz, the brainchild behind Jolie Lade wines, had made the journey all over the wine world before starting Jolie Lade. With stints as wine director for Thomas Keller’s Bouchon, and former assistant winemaker for Pax Wines, this formulated the plan for his future winemaking endeavors. Jolie Lade is a loose term for Pretty-Ugly, a French term that lends itself well to the unconventionally beautiful styles of Scott Schultz. He takes classic French varieties, many of them uncommon in the states, and raises them to be beautiful wines. Scott is a one-man operation (of both hands and feet) and does it well.
This Gamay is from the mountainous area of the Sierra Foothills from the Barsotti Vineyard. The grapes are picked twice, one early and one later harvest. The wine takes on the traditions of Beaujolais; carbonic and whole cluster fermentation is used for aromatics and fruitiness. The grapes are crushed by foot, reiterating the Old World feeling in these French-inspired wines. This wine ages in used barriques for six months and bottled right away for instant drinkability.

This wine is inspired by the reds of the French Alps. The grape varieties are traditional for the Savoie and Jura areas. They’re aromatic, red fruit-driven, herbal and peppery with grip. Even though this bottle is of a general northern California appellation, but the style is very un-California. As are traditional styles to the French Alpine areas, carbonic maceration is used for freshness and fruit; whole cluster is used for added grip and spice aromas.

Stolpman Vineyards, Syrah Estate Grown Ballard Canyon 2017
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00Variety: Syrah
Founded over 20 years ago by Tom Stolpman when he discovered hidden in the hills of California’s Central Coast a rare limestone outcropping unobstructed from the Pacific Ocean wind which became part of the now famous Ballard Canyon AVA. The winery is currently run by son Pete Stolpman and his wife Jessica. Known for employing their own crew "La Quadrilla", the vineyards are maintained only by hand with care and dedication. The Estate Syrah is the flagship bottling of Stolpman yielding as Pete would say a "yum quotient" reminiscent of the Northern Rhone with its intense, concentrated red fruit and velvety textural balance.

Stolpman Vineyards, Love You Bunches Sangiovese Carbonic Ballard Canyon 2019
Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00Variety: Sangiovese
Love You Bunches is an ode to the winemaking method of Beaujolais—carbonic fermentation﹘allowing the grapes to ferment in whole bunches. Though it may sound a little nutty, this method gives grapes an utter juiciness and freshness that’s hard to come by in other winemaking. Pair this with the higher acid and tannin Sangiovese variety﹘the whole bunch fermentation produces a softer tannin red than traditionally fermented red wine. There are two expressions of this fun, witty bottle—red and rosé. Both are recommended to be served chilled and consumed right away!

Subliminal, White Wine Santa Ynez Valley 2019
Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00Variety: Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon
This wine is the product of a unique partnership of two winemaking families: the Parientes (Nomadic Distribu- tion) and the Porters (Amplify Wines). LA-based Nomadic Distribution launched in 2011 with the aim of exploring and sharing artisanal wines from interesting regions around the world. Amplify’s Cameron and Marlen Porter are from Santa Barbara. Their philosophy is to “amplify the voice of site” and “embrace happy accidents.”
Amplify’s Subliminal White has alot to say. After the Porters toyed with the idea of a counterpart to their Subliminal Red, they seized the opportunity to make a Bordeaux-style blanc. Coming from a single vineyard in Santa Ynez of 41-year-old vines, the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are grown together there. From here, this wine becomes centered on its winemaking. The Sauvignon Blanc, known for being acidic and citrus-forward, undergoes malolactic fermentation to bring out its richer textures and aromatics. The Semillon variety is harvested earlier to retain its underripe tones and mineral intensity, bringing balance to the blend. The wine is aged for nine months in neutral wood. It’s a special ode to producers of Sancerre and Bordeaux, but unmistakably amplifies the voice of southern California.

Evening Land, Seven Springs Chenin Blanc 2018
Regular price $40.00 Save $-40.00Variety: Chenin Blanc
Seven Springs Vineyard is historic by Oregon’s standards; the vines were planted in 1984 over layers of volcanic ash. Evening Land’s story begins with the teaming of celebrated wine writer and somm Rajat Paar with his viticulturist friend, Sashi Moorman. These two incredible minds have dreamed up something of a fantasy in the Seven Springs Vineyard of Eola-Amity Hills. Here the vineyard is surrounded by Douglas Fir trees with the Cascades dotting the horizon. Seven Springs is eastern facing, allowing for plenty of sunlight during the day, though winds from the Van Duzer Corridor conveniently keeps the vines cool. Though Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are flagships of the winery, Raj and Sashi continue to experiment with Old World varieties like Dolcetto, Riesling, and Gamay.

Anthill Farms, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2018
Regular price $38.00 Save $-38.00Variety: Pinot Noir
Anthill Farms is a group of three friends who went against all the odds to start a winery in California. They didn’t have money saved nor were they born into the business. They were cellar rats, the guys moving hoses and cleaning floors, for some pretty significant wineries, Williams Selyem being the most influential. However, while still quite young, the three decided to pull together a tiny amount of cash and started making wine at a crushpad facility. Before long the wines had a cult following and we’ve been drinking them ever since. Many of Anthill’s wines only make it to a mailing list or restaurants; we are lucky to include their small production wines.
This wine sources Pinot Noir from the two coolest coastal parts of the appellation of Sonoma Coast in Sonoma County—the low coast and the high coast. Due to its consistent cool breezes from the coastal microclimate, picking is delayed until October, giving grapes a long growing season and time to develop complexity.
