In Catalonia, long known as the homeland of Cava, has been making plenty of other still wine beyond this style. Ferran Lacruz has just eight hectares of vines in the heart of Penedes. He does not farm within any appellation requirements; as such, he is free to make wine as he sees fit. As this area of Spain is his homeland, he looks to make natural wines that express the land that seduced him to begin with.

Some might call his style of winemaking a bit obsessive, but Ferran doesn't know any other way. There are three sweeps through the vineyard during harvest. With each sweep comes an additional style of winemaking with the largest difference being the length of skin maceration.

Cati Ribot 'Escursac' 2021

Cati is an anomaly in the world of natural wine. Not only is she one of two female winemakers on the island of Mallorca, she is also just one of three natural winemakers in a place where winemaking is difficult. While many use the international varieties like Cabernet and Syrah to make their wines noticed by the world, Cati made a firm decision to use indignenous varieties that are lighter in style, reflecting the terroir of Mallorca. It shows just how focused Cati is as she not only is a single mother with a winery to run, additionally she flew back and forth from Barcelona to Mallorca daily while training as a somm. Her work ethic is unparalleled.

The Escursac grape variety was only just revived in 2006 in Mallorca after years and years of having been wiped out by phylloxera. The fruit is a combination of both estate and purchased fruit. The wines ages between steel, amphora, and used French oak barrels.

Oriol Artigas "Sammay" Negre 2021

Variety: Trepat

The wines of Oriol Artigas only just begun in 2011 in the quite small DO of Alella located outside of Barcelona. After falling into wine doing a harvest nearby, realized that his work would no longer take place in a laboratory, but rather in pursuit of making wine. He and several other winemakers banded together to revive the vines of Alella, a place that was well on its way to extinction, though experienced a turn around due largely in part to Oriol’s efforts. His work ethic is focused and humble. Farming is done in a biodynamic fashion, sulfur is never used, and most of the aging is completed in steel. The wines are Mediterranean in nature, reflecting not just his homeland, but also the nearby sea.

Trepat, a variety typically seen in sparkling rose Cava stands on its own as a light and playful still red. The wine undergoes some whole cluster fermentation, aging simply in steel before it is ready to be drunk immediately.

Stratum Jumilla, 'Matas Altas' 2020

Variety: Monastrell

Believe it or not, this is our first wine we’ve carried from the region of Jumilla in Spain. Stratum Wines have a significant sense of place and with a keen sense of farming. This is a fourth generation winemaking family who never had to graft their vines after the phylloxera epidemic in Europe. The average age of their vines is 70 years. Their medium is mostly Monastrell in this part of Spain. As this variety unfortunately is known for making big mass-produced styles of wine, it’s refreshing to see that the Cerron is focusing on quality and maintaining the upkeep of their old vines.

Monastrell vines were planted between 1911 and 1967. The altitude of this site is around 900 meters in elevation. While the blend is mostly Monastrell, 10% of the wine comprises a field blend coplanted in the same old vineyard sites.

And while Rioja is its most famous region made from Tempranillo, which may be just as famous, it was the smaller region of Ribera del Duero that made it famous first. If it wasn’t for Vega Sicilia’s recognition of both the 1917 and 1918 vintages at the 1929 World Fair in Barcelona, the reputation of these wines wouldn’t quite be what they are now. Using Tempranillo, then known as a “country wine,” it was then blended with the fruit from Bordeaux vine cuttings. After 1982, the purchase of the Bodega by the Alvarez family shifted the winery towards a modernized hand as well as a welcomed international reputation. Vega Sicilia makes two wines—Unico and the multi-vintage Reserva Especial. Typically the wines are not released until they are ten years old, becoming increasingly difficult to find with each passing year.

The Unico bottles famously undergo a lengthy aging process, ten years being the typical window. 2007 was a colder vintage, thus making a wine more elegant than others, yet still structured. Tempranillo always makes up most of the blend here with Cabernet Sauvignon making up the rest.

Anima Mundi, Cami del Xops Pet Nat 2021

Agusti Torelló Roca is a new producer who is helping to keep the momentum of the New Spain movement going. He keeps himself busy among three different projects all based in Catalunya, although Anima Mundia is based in the Alt Penedes where he uses the family winery and vineyards. The sites here are unique as their location to the ocean is very close and the Garraf Massif mountain range is also near. Anima Mundi comes from a theory by Plato called the “soul of the world,” thereby expressing the soul of Alt Penedes through soil, nature, climate, and human tradition.

Made from both Macabeu and Xarel-lo, which are generally used in the production of Cava, but this goes into the natural sparkler known as a pet-nat. Unlike other pet-nats, this one ferments in both steel and French oak before going on to finish fermentation in the bottle naturally.

Cati Ribot 'Escursac' 2020

Cati is an anomaly in the world of natural wine. Not only is she one of two female winemakers on the island of Mallorca, she is also just one of three natural winemakers in a place where winemaking is difficult. While many use the international varieties like Cabernet and Syrah to make their wines noticed by the world, Cati made a firm decision to use indignenous varieties that are lighter in style, reflecting the terroir of Mallorca. It shows just how focused Cati is as she not only is a single mother with a winery to run, additionally she flew back and forth from Barcelona to Mallorca daily while training as a somm. Her work ethic is unparalleled.

The Escursac grape variety was only just revived in 2006 in Mallorca after years and years of having been wiped out by phylloxera. The fruit is a combination of both estate and purchased fruit. The wines ages between steel, amphora, and used French oak barrels.

Dolores Cabrera is an absolute breath of fresh air on the island of Tenerife, part of the Canary Islands in southern Spain. She is growing Listan Negro and Listan Blanco as her own project which she has named ‘La Araucaria,’ the name of a local evergreen tree found in the Canaries, and also seen on the label of her wines. Her vines can be found in the vine growing area of La Valle de la Orotava. She has done well at persuading all the other local vintners to convert their farming to organic. The team consists of her husband, Pedro, who assists in the cellar, and a team of women that help her with the harvest.

Succes Vinicola, Conca de Barbera Trepat 'La Cuca de Llum' 2020

This winemaking tale happens in the small appellation of Conca de Barbera, located just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic Ocean in the region of Catalunya. A couple that was brought together by their love of wine. Initially the project was facilitated by “Viver de Celleristes,” a winemaking facility that allowed young entrepreneurs space to create their wines. They eventually moved to a more permanent winemaking residence in a garagiste winery. With them being so new to the Conco de Barbera appellation, other local growers assumed the couple did not know what they were doing as they were using organic methods. Mariona and Albert take part in all the work together. The wines are made in a natural manner, which is progressively becoming more and more of a focus in The New Spain.

Cuca de Llum means lightworm and refers to the winemakers who saw a lightworm one night when they went to the vineyards to sample fruit. The wine drinks like the reds of Alto Adige or Jura. The winemaking is a little quicker, as the juice only spends five months on the lees in steel before being released.

Viticola Sileo, Montsant Sileo 2020

Variety: Grenache and Carignan

The name of this winery is “sileo,” and as such, is a Latin word that means to be still or quiet. This greatly reflects the qualities of the Carthusian monks who traveled from France, planting the original vines in both Priorat and Montsant. This order of monks carry on in silence. The winemaker Agusti also makes his wine with a bit of quiet reverence, and so ‘sileo’ makes its case. Agusti Torelló Roca projects are based in Catalonia in northern Spain. Sileo is his Montsant project with a focus on Grenache and Carignan. His other projects AT Roca and Anima Mundi are based on whites and sparkling.

This is a fairly classic wine of the hilly appellation of Montsant. The vines come from several organically farmed sites that are hand harvested. The wine ages in French oak and steel.

Alfredo Maestro’s family came to Peñafiel from the Basque Country. Having grown up amongst the vines, he had a great interest in wine and started making his own from an early age. From the beginning, he farmed organically, yet in the cellar he worked literally by the book, teaching himself enology from a textbook, using all the tricks to make a “correct” wine of Ribera del Duero. He would use cultured yeasts, tannins, color enhancers, etc. It took some time, but Alfredo eventually had a revelation—as an organic farmer, why would he use chemicals to adjust the finished wine? It made the most sense for his cellar work to match the integrity which he used in the vineyard—so he did just that. He began eliminating unnecessary products and additives. By 2003 he was making wine without additives whatsoever, including sulfur.

Viña Almate is the first wine that Alfredo made, named after himself (Al-ma-te). This is an entry-level Duero wine made from Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) sourced from various plots. The wine has a serious bit of stem inclusion, resulting in a powerful, spicy, and full-bodied red. It is fermented in stainless steel and spends the winter resting in vats.

This style of rose actually means “teardrop pink” in Spanish. The fruit comes from high elevation vineyards in the Ribero del Duero area of Castilla y Leon. The majority of the grapes come from old vineyards planted in calcareous-clay soils.The fruit is completely destemmed and does not undergo any maceration on the skins. The ageing process is completed between both stainless steel and used French oak.

This winemaking tale happens in the small appellation of Conca de Barbera, located just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic Ocean in the region of Catalunya. A couple that was brought together by their love of wine. Initially the project was facilitated by “Viver de Celleristes,” a winemaking facility that allowed young entrepreneurs space to create their wines. They eventually moved to a more permanent winemaking residence in a garagiste winery. With them being so new to the Conco de Barbera appellation, other local growers assumed the couple did not know what they were doing as they were using organic methods. Mariona and Albert take part in all the work together. The wines are made in a natural manner, which is progressively becoming more and more of a focus in The New Spain.

Paralleda is one of those varieties that is only grown in a specific place, and that would be in Catalonia, Spain. The grape is known for its tart green apple flavors and for its production in Cava. The fruit comes from a farm with vines over 40 years old. The wine is allowed to ferment spontaneously with natural yeast, and experiences 20 days of skin contact.

Brought to you by a couple of the exquisite minds behind Clos Figueras, Anne Cannan—daughter to wine exporter Christopher Cannan, and Miquel Compte, comes this passion project located in Montsant, just outside of Priorat. The vines are sourced from the Pinyana area of Montsant, where Miquel’s family owned vines, a place of rustic beauty with verdant forests covering jagged rocky formations. It is easy to see what inspired this project. Miquel is in charge of viticulture while Anne is in charge of winemaking. Their focus is red and white Grenache from old vines; French in style, but distinctly Montsant.

This white blend is sourced from 40 year old vines from relatively high altitude. The wine is fermented in both French oak casks and stainless. Grenache Blanc and a touch of Chardonnay come together for a white that has floral, salinity, and a round texture that needs food.

Tentenublo, Olivan-Ruiz, 'Custero' Rioja 2018

Tentenublo is the name given to the ringing of bells aimed at fighting off hailstorms in some Rioja villages. Working organically, using native yeast fermentation, and limited sulphur, winemaker Roberto applies Rioja’s long established custom of barrel aging working mainly with French oak to craft wines of substance and character. The property of Tentenublo, despite its small size, is described as a collection of several distinct microclimates. The vines are spread throughout 22 parcels in the foothills of the Cantabria mountains. The estate is planted mainly to the classic red and white Rioja varieties including Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura. Each site is influenced to some extent by the Ebro River, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

Custero is a family project from the mind of Roberto Oliván and his wife Leyre Ruiz (of Tentenublo) that comes from its own single vineyard in the village of Viñaspre in Rioja Alavesa. It’s made in the classic style of the old Rioja wines—a low viticulture intervention and blended with the traditional red and white varieties. Fermentation happens in open barrels where no yeasts are added.

Alfredo Maestro, El Rey del Glam 2021

Alfredo Maestro’s family came to Peñafiel from the Basque Country. Having grown up amongst the vines, he had a great interest in wine and started making his own from an early age. From the beginning, he farmed organically, yet in the cellar he worked literally by the book, teaching himself enology from a textbook, using all the tricks to make a “correct” wine of Ribera del Duero. He would use cultured yeasts, tannins, color enhancers, etc. It took some time, but Alfredo eventually had a revelation—as an organic farmer, why would he use chemicals to adjust the finished wine? It made the most sense for his cellar work to match the integrity which he used in the vineyard—so he did just that. He began eliminating unnecessary products and additives. By 2003 he was making wine without additives whatsoever, including sulfur.

The bottle name means "The King of Glam!" This is Garnacha harvested from two different plots, one in the Gredos mountains and the other in Ribera del Duero. The winemaking included both whole cluster fermentation and carbonic maceration. Due to its ageing in vats and low sulfur addition, this Garnacha is meant to be consumed immediately.

In their work, they create wines from local grape varieties that have almost been forgotten. The family is actually recognized for their work in bringing the Graciano variety back to life. While their focus was on the region of Navarra up until 2014, they began to bring on other vineyard sites from the DOC Rioja.

This Garnacha is one of the single vineyard, terroir-driven sites from Zorzal coming from Navarra. The vines are 35 years in age coming from a high altitude of over 520 meters. The Garnacha has undergone an early harvest and spent nine months in two-year-old French oak.

The year was 1997. A world-renowned winemaker had just shown Christopher Cannan and his wife, Charlotte, an abandoned vineyard just north of the Gratallops called “Figueres.” That same day, the entire Cannan family piled into their car and followed the winemaker, post-haste, to Barcelona. At a simple café, the Cannan’s purchased the 100-hectare estate. Initially, the terrain of the previously abandoned vineyards had to be prepared for planting. (A nearby grove of century-old olive trees needed to be re-worked as well.) Both undertakings were just the beginning of what would become the Cannan family’s quest. They traveled extensively in their spare time to work under some of the best winemakers in the world. Today, their combination of passion for the property and skill in the cellar sets these wines above the rest.

“Font de la Figuera” means fig tree fountain in the Catalan language, as can be seen on the label. The blend is classic to what the region of Priorat does well. All the fruit is destemmed except for some of the Syrah. The wine goes on to age for 12 months in French oak.
