Ar.Pe.Pe., short for Arturo Pelizzatti Perego, may be one of the most exciting wines to make its way into the selections of Hart & Cru. I have been drinking these wines every time I end up in NYC or SF for years. Getting them into Ohio has been difficult because the allocations are incredibly limited. The winery is located on the border of Italy and Switzerland. Wine pros will say that the protection of the mountain and being out of the foggy region of the Langhe, just to the south, gives this Nebbiolo the finesse of Pinot Noir. From a single plot of red granite near the top of the Sassella cru, this is the family’s favourite wine and we think the greatest example of old-school mountain Nebbiolo from Valtellina. The wine sees a long maceration in large tini and rests in chestnut botti grandi for four years before sitting in bottle in their cantina until deemed ready. Complex and intense, the grapes seem to have sucked the minerals out of the rocks upon which they were grown.
