Variety: Treixadura, Albariño, Lado, Torrontés
Luis A. Rodriguez Vazquez is a quiet soul, head down into his work since 1988 in the Ribeiro region of Galicia. Luis is a bit like his homeland of Ribeiro, flying under the radar. He doesn’t actually grow the region’s popular bulk wine varieties, but instead has decided to revive some of the region’s almost extinct varieties. To his advantage, Luis grew up in Galicia in the village of Arnoia; by deciding to center his vineyards there, he knew precisely where all the best plots of land were. Many of his 180 micro-plots were planted by Luis himself. He employs the lutte raisonée farming mentality, and uses minor amounts of sulphur in the cellar. His work is well respected across the Iberian Peninsula.
This is a wine named for Luis’ Uncle Martin, from who he took over his first vineyard. It's a blend of native white varieties from steep granite-based hillsides in the town of Arnoia. This is a fresh and vibrant white with minerality not unlike seashells. It ages in vats for 10-12 months, with about three months on the lees.
Atalier by Raul Perez, Rias Baixas A Cruz Das Animas 2019Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00
Luis Gutiérrez, famed wine critic based in Spain, says of him that “Raúl is a free spirit, he does and doesn’t do, he goes from place to place, he doesn’t stop inventing, he doesn’t stop creating, he doesn’t stop tasting, he changes and changes again and again…”
The living legend that is Raúl Pérez hails from the northwestern corner of Spain in the small region of Bierzo, and while he makes lovely wine close to home, he values collaboration as much he values his grapes! Atalier is a project Raúl has embarked on with friends in the Galicia, home of the peachy and refreshingly salty variety Albariño. Raúl and friends found nearly 100 year old vines and use super traditional techniques to create an ode to this lovely grape. “A Cruz de Ánimas” refers to “the crossroads of souls” - no doubt a poetic nod to this winemaker’s drive to band together with like minded friends to create the best wines around.
Alberto Nanclares, Albarino Dandelion 2020Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00
If you were ever hoping for a story of an accidental winemaker, hang tight. Alberto Nanclares and his wife uprooted from their home in the Basque country to the ocean side village of Castrelo. The small home they purchased incidentally came with some vineyards. While Alberto initially had no plans to make wine, the thought of farming nagged at him, and so, a winemaker was born. He invested in winemaking tools, eventually setting up shop in his garage. Conventional farming then turned into organic and biodynamic, an impressive feat for a region prone to viticultural difficulties, even using seaweed from the nearby Atlantic for composting. Alberto is making incredible grower Albariño, as well as Garnacha, Mencia, and other local varieties at incredible value.
