You’d never see his name on the label, but Michael Schmelzer of Monte Bernardi is the winemaker behind this Campania-based project. His wine production has been increasing, though the quality of the wine remains the same as ever.

Meaning "the gathering of the witches," this wine's name takes inspiration from the area from which it hails. In the region of Campania in the south of Italy is where Falanghina thrives in the Mediterranean sun. Here in Campania is the province of Benevento, an area with an extensive history of witchcraft practice. Pagans would come to this province from all over and dance around a walnut tree on the banks of the Sabato River. In summary, Benevento is the gathering of the witches. Falanghina is one of the main varieties of Campania with roots originating in Greece.

Winemaker Sabino Loffredo has swiftly created a reputation within and beyond Italy for some of the most exquisite Greco and Fiano wines in Avellino of Campania in the south of Italy. Pietracupa was founded in 1993 by his family, starting as just 3 hectares of vineyards. The vines were chosen with the intent of showcasing the mountainous terrain of Avellino to the world. He produces limited amounts of Fiano, Greco, Falanghina, and Aglianico coming from some of the finest vines in Avellino. Both wine and winemaker share a similar mantra; staying original and faithful to the land with elegance, depth, and minerality. Due to the southern climate of Campania, the wines benefit from longer time on the vine. These coastal wines crave seafood and olive oil based dishes.

Giusto Occhipinti of COS is one of the most critical names in Italy. COS was founded by three friends to make traditional wine with respect for the place the grapes are grown. During their first harvest in 1980, they were the youngest wine producers in Italy. The acronym of their three last names forms “COS.” They were early adopters to Biodynamic farming, starting a movement on the island, which are still golden standards. The friends are hard workers, using an old winery given to them by a family friend and opting to use terracotta vases for ageing, a completely neutral vessel. Sicily has just one DOCG—Cerasuolo di Vittoria; the friends were the first winery to bottle a DOCG wine in Sicily. COS is located in Vittoria, the farthest tip of southeastern Sicily. The area recalls that of Africa, with its climate and land of red, ochre, and yellow tones.

Fermentation begins in concrete followed by ageing in Slavonian oak for 18 months, and then another year in bottle before it’s released. This wine can go into the cellar, though can still be enjoyed now. It is smooth and delicate, pairing well with many Mediterranean dishes.

Giuseppe Russo left his native Sicily for a time, trained as a pianist and music teacher, and studied literature. But when his father, Girolamo, died, Giuseppe returned in 2005 to make “the best wines (I) can in this exceptional, often challenging but uniquely beautiful area.” Although the Russo family calls the area in and around Passopisciaro home, it is an interesting and dynamic place that is attracting winemakers from the all over the world. The Russos have 26 hectares of land, 15 planted to vineyards and the rest to olives and hazelnut groves. Their vineyards are on the north face of Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, in the north-eastern corner of Sicily.

'A Rina' comes from various contradas, notably San Lorenzo, Feudo, Calderara Sottana, Feudo di Mezzo. Vines range in age from 20 to 100 years old. Ageing is done between oak and concrete for about one year.

Even though the estate Monte Bernardi dates back to 1085 in the region of Panzano in Tuscany, Michael Schmelzer and family purchased the estate in 2003 and have been making beautiful Sangiovese-based wines and olive oil ever since. The property’s vineyards are situated in the hilly, southern-most region of Panzano, an area that has been acknowledged as one of the “Grand Crus” of Chianti Classico. Most of the vineyards are more than 40 years old. Before 1992, the grapes were sold to neighboring farms. The Schmelzer family, originally from Michigan, purchased Monte Bernardi in 2003. As winemaker, Michael has invested time, love and money in the vineyards, the winery and villa. The property was certified biodynamic in 2004.

This liter bottle is a celebration of Italy! It is a new style fashioning of the fiasco bottle, (remember those bottles in the straw basket?) The wine takes the party a step further by sourcing grapes from three different regions: Sangiovese and other Tuscany varieties, Montepulciano from Marche, and several varieties from Sicily—Frappatto, Nero d’Avola, and Nerello Mascalese. After over 20 years of making wine in Tuscany, Fabrizio and Cecilia Piccin went in search of a different location with ideal conditions to begin a new winery project. They settled on Basilicata, home of the Vulture volcano and ideal conditions for planting the Aglianico variety. They founded the Grifalco winery in 2004. Upon looking at the image of the bird on the bottle, one might think it was an image of a vulture; alas, it is not. The name “Grifalco” is a tribute to the family’s past and present. It combines the griffin, the symbol of the Piccin’s original home of Montepulciano in Tuscany, and the falcon, symbol of Monte Vulture, their adopted home. They make four wines; Gricos is their entry-level, Grifalco is their flagship, and the two cru bottles—Damaschito and Daginestra.

This is the flagship wine of Grifalco. Bearing that in mind, the Piccin family thinks that this wine is a representation of the region’s potential for Aglianico. The fruit is sourced from four different vineyards planted between 1980 and 1995.

SRC is a small family operation that started in just 2013. Amazingly, the wines are low-production and have just recently become available here in Ohio. It is the force of husband and wife duo, Rori and Cinzia, as well as their daughter, Sandra. This is how SRC gets its name—an acronym of all their names. The project began as a small plot of land of just 0.5 hectares that Rori purchased as a surprise for Cinzia, one that went over rather well as the family continued acquiring land. The identity of Etna comes through in each of SRC’s wines where they showcase the ancient low-yielding vines, the volcanic soils, and the charming Mediterranean spirit. The family uses a careful hand in the cellar, allowing the fruit to shine—no sulfur and minimal oak ageing. We agree with many who say these wines are truly representative of their sense of place more so than any other place in the world.

These are 70 year old vines that thrive in the volcanic soil in Mt. Etna, especially when done naturally as this family has done. The wine ages in cement for one year before its release.

Arianna Occhipinti is a young woman of fierce perspective and drive. Her uncle is Giusto Occhipinti of the Sicilian COS winery. At age sixteen, Arianna was invited by Giusto to help out at the Vinitaly international wine exhibit. In four days time, she knew that she then wanted to study wine at university. Ironically, university did not help with her professional career, as everything she had learned was from her uncle. Undeterred, she began fresh with just one acre of abandoned vines, and grew. Her focus then became Frappatto and Nero D’avola, grown naturally and biodynamically. Not to be overshadowed by her uncle, Arianna has grown into her own person as a winemaker and received international acclaim as a young woman in the industry.

The SP68 refers to the main road that runs by the vineyards. It is also the oldest wine route ever attested as peasants would use this route to bring wines to the coast. Arianna Occhipinti likes to say that she is carrying the past and future at the same time via SP68. This is blend of Arian

na's mainstay grapes of Frappato and Nero d'Avola. The grapes come from young organic vines and gets fermented in concrete.

Winemaker Sabino Loffredo has swiftly created a reputation within and beyond Italy for some of the most exquisite Greco and Fiano wines in Avellino of Campania in the south of Italy. Pietracupa was founded in 1993 by his family, starting as just 3 hectares of vineyards. The vines were chosen with the intent of showcasing the mountainous terrain of Avellino to the world. He produces limited amounts of Fiano, Greco, Falanghina, and Aglianico coming from some of the finest vines in Avellino. Both wine and winemaker share a similar mantra; staying original and faithful to the land with elegance, depth, and minerality. Due to the southern climate of Campania, the wines benefit from longer time on the vine. These coastal wines crave seafood and olive oil based dishes.

Pietracupa is among the best producers in Campania, making this Taurasi among the best available. The wines aged in oak barrels for up to three years and another year in bottle before release, sometimes longer! This will do well with continued time in the cellar.

Centopassi is the winemaking entity of the Consorzio Libera Terra Mediterraneo Cooperativa Sociale Onlus, a group of social co-operatives that cultivate lands seized from the mafia in Sicily. The cooperative oversees 94 hectares of vineyard area. Giovanni Ascione of Nanni Copè oversees the winemaking operation. The Upper Belice Corleonese area is particularly well suited to producing high-quality wines. Limestone peaks pop up along the highlands, and Mediterranean breezes keep the vines healthy. These high-altitude vines produce elegant, fresh, drinkable wines. In January, Decanter magazine said “On Sicily, Centopassi is the star. Not only does it make excellent, high-altitude wine, but it does so with grapes grown on land once owned by the Sicilian mafia...It’s remarkable what altitude can do.”

On the southern outskirts of the city Palermo is the vineyard of Portella della Ginestra situated at a staggering 1000 feet in elevation. As Centopassi’s vineyards were once owned by the mafia, this vineyard was once the site of an unfortunate massacre, and the vineyard was named in memory of those victims.

SRC is a small family operation that started in just 2013. Amazingly, the wines are low-production and have just recently become available here in Ohio. It is the force of husband and wife duo, Rori and Cinzia, as well as their daughter, Sandra. This is how SRC gets its name—an acronym of all their names. The project began as a small plot of land of just 0.5 hectares that Rori purchased as a surprise for Cinzia, one that went over rather well as the family continued acquiring land. The identity of Etna comes through in each of SRC’s wines where they showcase the ancient low-yielding vines, the volcanic soils, and the charming Mediterranean spirit. The family uses a careful hand in the cellar, allowing the fruit to shine—no sulfur and minimal oak ageing. We agree with many who say these wines are truly representative of their sense of place more so than any other place in the world.

“Alberello” is the name of this site boasting vines up to 100 years old that never saw phylloxera. The vines are home to softer volcanic ash on this part of the volcano allowing for a softer and intensely aromatic wine showcasing the real charm of Nerello Mascalese. The juice ages in concrete for twelve months, allowing the Albello’s purity to really shine.

Giusto Occhipinti of COS is one of the most critical names in Italy. COS was founded by three friends to make traditional wine with respect for the place the grapes are grown. During their first harvest in 1980, they were the youngest wine producers in Italy. The acronym of their three last names forms “COS.” They were early adopters to Biodynamic farming, starting a movement on the island, which are still golden standards. The friends are hard workers, using an old winery given to them by a family friend and opting to use terracotta vases for ageing, a completely neutral vessel. Sicily has just one DOCG—Cerasuolo di Vittoria; the friends were the first winery to bottle a DOCG wine in Sicily. COS is located in Vittoria, the farthest tip of southeastern Sicily. The area recalls that of Africa, with its climate and land of red, ochre, and yellow tones.

This is Nero d’Avola coming from their estate vineyards in Vittoria from red clay soils. Ageing is completed between concrete tanks and in the bottle.

Giuseppe Russo left his native Sicily for a time, trained as a pianist and music teacher, and studied literature. But when his father, Girolamo, died, Giuseppe returned in 2005 to make “the best wines (I) can in this exceptional, often challenging but uniquely beautiful area.” Although the Russo family calls the area in and around Passopisciaro home, it is an interesting and dynamic place that is attracting winemakers from the all over the world. The Russos have 26 hectares of land, 15 planted to vineyards and the rest to olives and hazelnut groves. Their vineyards are on the north face of Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, in the north-eastern corner of Sicily.

This is made entirely from Sicily’s main red variety, Nerello Mascalese. It is made from mostly young vines jout of the San Lorenzo Contrada, which are perfect for this fresh rose. To retain its freshness, it is aged completely in stainless steel.

This Bianco is made from the traditional Carricante with the addition of Grecanico (known as Garganega in northern Italy.) The vines are 50 to 70 years in age from black sandy soils on the north side of Etna. The winemaking is minimal, with the fruit undergoing 12 hours of maceration which is fairly common for these varieties. The lightly grippy tannin adds complexity while imparting texture and increasing its ageing potential.

L'Archetipo, Puglia Aglianico 2015

Since the 80’s Francesco Valentino began to convert his land to organic farming, but he came to find he wanted more from the vitality of his vineyards. In 2000 he implemented biodynamic farming. These practices are thanks to his studies on Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian scientist/thinker who touched on endless fields of human endeavor, including biodynamic farming. After a few years of biodynamics, he realized there was still something further to be done. Francesco studied the works of Masanobu Fukuoka, a farmer/philosopher known as the father of modern day natural farming. At long last, he implemented sustainable agriculture, in which all synergies in his vineyard ecosystem were linked: the Synergistic Agriculture, a balanced ecosystem.

This Aglianico comes from red earth with plenty of calcareous rock. The wine spends four years ageing between steel, large barrels, and in the bottle before its release.

Winemaker Sabino Loffredo has swiftly created a reputation within and beyond Italy for some of the most exquisite Greco and Fiano wines in Avellino of Campania in the south of Italy. Pietracupa was founded in 1993 by his family, starting as just 3 hectares of vineyards. The vines were chosen with the intent of showcasing the mountainous terrain of Avellino to the world. Dolores Cabrera is an absolute breath of fresh air on the island of Tenerife, part of the Canary Islands in southern Spain. She is growing Listan Negro and Listan Blanco as her own project which she has named ‘La Araucaria,’ the name of a local evergreen tree found in the Canaries, and also seen on the label of her wines. Her vines can be found in the vine growing area of La Valle de la Orotava. She has done well at persuading all the other local vintners to convert their farming to organic. The team consists of her husband, Pedro, who assists in the cellar, and a team of women that help her with the harvest.

SRC is a small family operation that started in just 2013. Amazingly, the wines are low-production and have just recently become available here in Ohio. It is the force of husband and wife duo, Rori and Cinzia, as well as their daughter, Sandra. This is how SRC gets its name—an acronym of all their names. The project began as a small plot of land of just 0.5 hectares that Rori purchased as a surprise for Cinzia, one that went over rather well as the family continued acquiring land. The identity of Etna comes through in each of SRC’s wines where they showcase the ancient low-yielding vines, the volcanic soils, and the charming Mediterranean spirit. The family uses a careful hand in the cellar, allowing the fruit to shine—no sulfur and minimal oak ageing. We agree with many who say these wines are truly representative of their sense of place more so than any other place in the world.

This is an entirely different approach to Nerello comparatively. Here, the fruit comes from 80 year old vines growing at almost 1000 meters in elevation. Grenache, known for growing well at high altitudes, makes up the remaining fifth of the blend. The juice goes through a unique winemaking journey; it ages in steel first, then a couple months in used French barrels, and finally back into the steel to complete the ageing. “Rivaggi” has everything going for it; the wine has backbone and elegance, fruit and minerality, acidity and aromatics.

After over 20 years of making wine in Tuscany, Fabrizio and Cecilia Piccin went in search of a different location with ideal conditions to begin a new winery project. They settled on Basilicata, home of the Vulture volcano and ideal conditions for planting the Aglianico variety. They founded the Grifalco winery in 2004. Upon looking at the image of the bird on the bottle, one might think it was an image of a vulture; alas, it is not. The name “Grifalco” is a tribute to the family’s past and present. It combines the griffin, the symbol of the Piccin’s original home of Montepulciano in Tuscany, and the falcon, symbol of Monte Vulture, their adopted home.

This is the flagship wine of Grifalco. Bearing this in mind, the Piccin family thinks that this wine is a representation of the region’s potential for Aglianico. The fruit is sourced from four different vineyards planted between 1980 and 1995.

Arianna Occhipinti, Terre Siciliane SP68 Bianco 2022

Arianna Occhipinti is a young woman of fierce perspective and drive. Her uncle is Giusto Occhipinti of the Sicilian COS winery. At age sixteen, Arianna was invited by Giusto to help out at the Vinitaly international wine exhibit. In four days time, she knew that she then wanted to study wine at university. Ironically, university did not help with her professional career, as everything she had learned was from her uncle. Undeterred, she began fresh with just one acre of abandoned vines, and grew. Her focus then became Frappatto and Nero D’avola, grown naturally and biodynamically. Not to be overshadowed by her uncle, Arianna has grown into her own person as a winemaker and received international acclaim as a young woman in the industry.

The SP68 refers to the main road that runs by the vineyards. It is also the oldest wine route ever attested as peasants would use this route to bring wines to the coast. Arianna likes to say that she is carrying the past and future at the same time via SP68. This is a blend of Muscat di Alexandria (but not sweet!) and the local Sicilian white called Albanello. This undergoes a couple weeks of skin maceration for texture, then six months in concrete, and one month in bottle.

COS, Zibibbo in Pithos Bianco 2021

Giusto Occhipinti of COS is one of the most critical names in Italy. COS was founded by three friends to make traditional wine with respect for the place the grapes are grown. During their first harvest in 1980, they were the youngest wine producers in Italy. The acronym of their three last names forms “COS.” They were early adopters to Biodynamic farming, starting a movement on the island, which are still golden standards. The friends are hard workers, using an old winery given to them by a family friend and opting to use terracotta vases for ageing, a completely neutral vessel. Sicily has just one DOCG—Cerasuolo di Vittoria; the friends were the first winery to bottle a DOCG wine in Sicily. COS is located in Vittoria, the farthest tip of southeastern Sicily. The area recalls that of Africa, with its climate and land of red, ochre, and yellow tones.

What a unique wine, which is saying something in regards to the usual wines coming from COS. Zibbibo is the name for Muscat de Alexandria when grown in Sicily. While the variety does have potential as a sweet wine, this is vinified dry. The wine also sees skin contact for a whopping seven months while it ages in amphorae, or pithos, the Greek name for the same ageing vessel. Even for the richer, tannic style wine, the alcohol is only 11.5% and the acidity is completely in balance.
