The story of two brothers: even while still in high school, Eric was already collecting bottles of prized top dollar Burgundy and Chablis, hiding them under his bed when he started college. Lyle’s quest for knowledge landed him in Austria where he met one of his most important friends in the industry, sommelier Rajat Parr. After a decade of restaurant work, Eric returned to Santa Barbara to start his own project, Lieu Dit, inspired by the Loire. Older brother Lyle had also worn many hats in the industry, ultimately landing a job for one of the most esteemed importers Kermit Lynch, leading regional sales. After leading separate lives for some time, the brothers both felt a calling to merge their two paths, which is how Railsback Frères came to be born.

Roman Ceremony is a recent project from Railsback that began as a small project for a Michelin starred restaurant, though with its success grew to 1000 case production. Fruit comes from two vineyards suited to Bordeaux varieties with its gravelly loam and clay. The fruit was harvested early, yielding a more elegant style Cabernet. Though this bottle doesn’t reinstate the Provencal style of the other Railsback bottles, it earned a separate name inspired by the birthplace of wine.

According to Matt Murphy, co-founder, and president of Presqui’le winery, the greatest wineries are multigenerational family endeavors. In fact, the family is very close and loves doing things together, including his sister Anna, the enologist. Anna and Matt both grew up around the family’s farm in Louisiana, which was the forerunner for their interest in winemaking. Dieter Cronje, winemaker for Presqu’ile, has quite the prestigious resumé. While on a mission to gain a more global perspective, he did an exchange program with the University of Bordeaux and traveled extensively through Burgundy and Champagne to gain more understanding of Pinot Noir. After working with Matt Murphy at the Ambullneo winery and sharing many late-night bottles of Burgundy, they realized they worked well together. Matt then decided that Dieter would be a great fit as winemaker for Presqu’ile.

Enfield Wine Company is the passion project of John Lockwood and his wife Amy Seese. Founded in 2010, the project is very young, but despite that has recently started to gain attention nationwide. These are truly some of our favorites from California. John only uses native yeast and the wine is never filtered or cold stabilized. The growers he works with changes from year to year while he continues his relationships with small growers from some of California’s most special heritage sites. His passion is contagious and his energy unwavering.

These are mostly Spanish varieties coming together that makes a wine that is distinctly Californian. The vineyards are all heritage sites located in both Wild Horse Valley and the Sierra Foothills in central California. The wine was aged in barrels for almost a year, a touch of which are new.

Self-described disruptors, the founders of No Fine Print manage bands for a living. And we don’t mean the kind of band you were in when you were a kid and made your mom crazy banging drums and twanging bass in your garage. Co-founder Pat Corcoran helped put Chance The Rapper on the map. Music industry pal and co-founder Tim Smith has managed multiple platinum artists for nearly two decades including Skrillex and BloodPop. Keen to leverage their creative branding expertise from music into wine, they teamed up with sommelier Ryan Arnold—Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants—to apply Ryan’s diverse wine industry background into a clever new brand. The lack of fine print denotes just that—less time reading the label and more time enjoying honest juice.

This is a no-frills Cabernet Sauvignon meant for immediate enjoyment. The alcohol is not high, nor is the intimidation. The Cabernet ages for one year in neutral French oak while the other varieties age in steel for a fresh New California style of wine.

Hirsch Vineyards, Pinot Noir San Andreas Fault 2021

Stand above the fog line and glimpse the power of the Pacific at 1500 ft. elevation and you’ll begin to understand what attracted David Hirsch to his extreme site back in 1980. Hirsch was not born into the wine world. Rather he was a lover of pinot noir, more specifically Burgundy, to which I can very much relate. Buying and selling textiles between the US and France, he reached a turning point. The lure of a quiet farm life with his family brought him to Fort-Ross Seaview, on the Sonoma coast, just three hours from San Francisco. The property sits on a ridge line, cleared of redwoods and fir trees with a climate that is incredibly coastal. Straddling the San Andreas Fault, the soils are intensely complex. Most world class vineyard sites are known for only having a few soils. Hirsch, on the other hand, has 44 different soil types. It should come as no surprise that this is one of the most expressive and important vineyards in the US.

The San Andreas Fault Estate Pinot Noir is the flagship wine from Hirsch, and the wine that represents the summation of the complex vineyard. David Hirsch says if you drink only one of his wines this should be it. It's 100% estate and 100% Hirsch.

Nestled in a nook of vineyards flanked by forest. Mila Family produces wines utterly ‘California’, but with respect to the Old Country. Guided by a team of winemakers from a wide variety of backgrounds, Mila has forged a Cabernet here of stunning power and, yet, plenty of elegance to make fans of great Cabernet sit up and take notice. Bathed in warm sun throughout the late morning and early afternoon, ripening of fruit is hardly a problem in these vineyards. Yet, consistent with the magic of Sonoma, cool mornings and evenings bring fogs that bathe the vines and ensure plenty of racy acidity in the wine. Aging occurs in new French oak, keeping the voice of the fruit from becoming too muted.

While Mila is the flagship domaine, Cartello was born in 2018 from a rather fruitful harvest at Mila. With the extra fruit and an idea to make excellent wine at a more approachable price point, Cartello was born. This is plush Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon, but with restraint. This is aged in French oak, half of which is new, for two years before release.

Waterhorse Ridge is a special vineyard located on a rocky ridge a mere five miles from the Pacific. This site is among the coolest in the California area due to its proximity to the ocean, but is balanced by the volcanic rocky soils and its advantageous afternoon sunlight. The grapes were destemmed, but 20% of the stems were added back. The wine ages for 18 months in different sizes of French oak barrels, 15% of which is new. As John Lockwood said, “The wine is “seductively ripe while maintaining its elegance.”

Anthill Farms is a group of three friends who went against all the odds to start a winery in California. They didn’t have money saved nor were they born into the business. They were cellar rats, the guys moving hoses and cleaning floors, for some pretty significant wineries, Williams Selyem being the most influential. However, while still quite young, the three decided to pull together a tiny amount of cash and started making wine at a crushpad facility. Before long the wines had a cult following and we’ve been drinking them ever since. Many of Anthill’s wines only make it to a mailing list or restaurants; we are lucky to include their small production wines.

In the western part of Sonoma County, close to the coast and the northern edge of the Petaluma Gap is the Peters Vineyard site farmed by none other than Randy Peters. Petaluma has the unique task of rushing cool air from the coast into this vineyard site where it stays cool and foggy. This site grows both Pinot Noir and Syrah for Anthill.

Peugh Vineyard, located in the middle of the Russian River Valley, has head-trained Chardonnay vines, something rarely seen for this variety. This is normally used on crazy, rocky soils with Syrah, Grenache or Mourvedre, but not Chardonnay. The reason this happened is the vines were planted in the early 1940s when California growers had no idea what they were doing. The result today is that this unique Chardonnay is produced from some of the oldest vines in the entire state.

The story—or journey rather—begins in the autumn of 2013 when Kashy Khaledi (son of winemaker Darioush Khaledi) was a creative media executive at Capitol Records, the “ideal job.” In the midst of a lengthy creative stump, Khaledi would often turn to old films for inspiration. He found one that shifted the course of his life—the 50s Polish film Ashes and Diamonds. A dream started to take shape; Khaledi threw himself into researching the viticulture and enology that shaped California’s wine culture. His quest for joint ventures began; he teamed up with Steve Matthiasson and Diana Snowden, farming vineyards in Napa Valley in the pursuit of balanced wine.

Farmed by Steve Matthiasson, the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon come from three vineyards from Napa’s Oak Knoll and Yountville districts. Ageing is completed all in barrel, 30% of which is done in new French barrels. This is opulent and textured, a white wine worthy of age.

Steve Matthiasson is a California pioneer. Daring to break Napa tradition, Steve and his wife Jill have planted rare, ancient Italian grapes though recognize that Napa loves all the well-known international grapes. A Matthiasson tasting experience, laid out on the picnic table that separates their home from the winemaking operation (with their dog and at least one son stopping by!) shows instantly how the couple reveres the place they farm together. This is real California wine and Matthiasson’s wines are where California wine is headed. Steve Matthiasson is a six-time nominee for a James Beard award, a serious achievement in the wine industry. He has also been named “Winemaker of the Year” by both Food & Wine Magazine and The San Francisco Chronicle. Steve and Jill are long time friends and mentors to Hart & Cru.

Linda Lista comes from the West Oak Knoll area in Napa, one of the classic Chardonnay spots in Napa, which actually was planted by Beringer back in 1989. It is a cool climate area perfect for making fresh Chardonnay with precision while still able to lap up the Napa Valley sunshine. This undergoes two harvests, 80% of which is early and 20% of it later. The wine is aged in neutral French oak barrels.

Presqu'ile Winery, Rose Santa Maria County 2023

Variety: Pinot Noir

According to Matt Murphy, co-founder, and president of Presqui’le winery, the greatest wineries are multigenerational family endeavors. In fact, the family is very close and loves doing things together, including his sister Anna, the enologist. Anna and Matt both grew up around the family’s farm in Louisiana, which was the forerunner for their interest in winemaking. Dieter Cronje, winemaker for Presqu’ile, has quite the prestigious resumé. While on a mission to gain a more global perspective, he did an exchange program with the University of Bordeaux and traveled extensively through Burgundy and Champagne in order gain more understanding of Pinot Noir. After working with Matt Murphy at the Ambullneo winery and sharing many late-night bottles of Burgundy, they realized they worked well together. Matt then decided that Dieter would be a great fit as winemaker for Presqu’ile.

This rose is not unlike the roses found in the Loire Valley in Sancerre, but from the cool growing region of Santa Barbara. Fresh and lively, yet juicy and quaffable, this is one of our favorites from the West Coast.

Anthill Farms is a group of three friends who went against all the odds to start a winery in California. They didn’t have money saved nor were they born into the business. They were cellar rats, the guys moving hoses and cleaning floors, for some pretty significant wineries, Williams Selyem being the most influential. However, while still quite young, the three decided to pull together a tiny amount of cash and started making wine at a crushpad facility. Before long the wines had a cult following and we’ve been drinking them ever since. Many of Anthill’s wines only make it to a mailing list or restaurants; we are lucky to include their small production wines.

Campbell Ranch Vineyard is a short way from the Pacific and farmed by Steve Campbell. At 750 feet above sea level, this site sits on the very edge of the residual marine layer from the Pacific. It’s another of the Anthill Farm’s choices for a cool coastal, late-ripening style. The vines are about twenty years old, low yielding, sitting atop Goldridge soil. This site farms both Pinot Noir and Syrah for Anthill Farms.

Cathy Corison is an absolute force to be reckoned with in the Napa Valley. Her journey started over 45 years ago with a course she took a wine appreciation course at Pamona college on a whim. Biology was a major factor in her falling for wine; she loved the way that wine is a collaboration of living systems, yet still something to be enjoyed. Her schedule following this course was jam packed with tenures and studying. A masters in enology at UC Davis followed. Several stints and internships at big names in Napa helped along the way, including Freemark Abbey and Chappellet. In 1987, the longing to make her own wine needed to show itself. She began buying grapes and barrels and Corison Winery was born. Fast forward to 1995—the purchase of Kronos Vineyard allowed her to have an estate vineyard and also build a winery. Her husband and partner, William Martin, designed the winery. The most recent addition to their estate was Sunbasket Vineyard, purchased in 2015 after sourcing that very fruit for over 25 years!

The Corison Cabernet is sourced from three benchland vineyards between Rutherford and St. Helena in the Napa Valley. As is the Corison style, this wine will age gracefully in the bottle. It’s complex, powerful, finessed, with a snappy acidity.

Presqu'ile Winery, Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley 2018

According to Matt Murphy, co-founder, and president of Presqui’le winery, the greatest wineries are multigenerational family endeavors. In fact, the family is very close and loves doing things together, including his sister Anna, the enologist. Anna and Matt both grew up around the family’s farm in Louisiana, which was the forerunner for their interest in winemaking. Dieter Cronje, winemaker for Presqu’ile, has quite the prestigious resumé. While on a mission to gain a more global perspective, he did an exchange program with the University of Bordeaux and traveled extensively through Burgundy and Champagne to gain more understanding of Pinot Noir. After working with Matt Murphy at the Ambullneo winery and sharing many late-night bottles of Burgundy, they realized they worked well together. Matt then decided that Dieter would be a great fit as winemaker for Presqu’ile.

This Chardonnay takes its fruit from two incredible sites, their own namesake Presqu’ile Vineyard and Bien Nacido Vineyard, both located in the cool climate of Santa Maria Valley. Techniques for the wine are natural and traditional. Ageing is done for eleven months in French oak (a touch of it is new), and a further six months in stainless steel.

Enfield Wine Company is the passion project of John Lockwood and his wife Amy Seese. Founded in 2010, the project is very young, but despite that has recently started to gain attention nationwide. These are truly some of our favorites from California. John only uses native yeast and the wine is never filtered or cold stabilized. The growers he works with changes from year to year while he continues his relationships with small growers from some of California’s most special heritage sites. His passion is contagious and his energy unwavering.

Haynes vineyard is something special due to the location. If you climb the tree in the middle of the vineyard, you can see through the entire San Pablo Bay. It truly is a historic site with some of the oldest vines in Napa.

Steve Matthiasson is a California pioneer. Daring to break Napa tradition, Steve and his wife Jill have planted rare, ancient Italian grapes though recognize that Napa loves all the well-known international grapes. A Matthiasson tasting experience, laid out on the picnic table that separates their home from the winemaking operation (with their dog and at least one son stopping by!) shows instantly how the couple reveres the place they farm together. This is real California wine and Matthiasson’s wines are where California wine is headed. Steve Matthiasson is a six-time nominee for a James Beard award, a serious achievement in the wine industry. He has also been named “Winemaker of the Year” by both Food & Wine Magazine and The San Francisco Chronicle. Steve and Jill are long time friends and mentors to Hart & Cru.

This bottle is a classic example of how Cabernet Sauvignon blends well with its other Bordeaux variety friends—small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The blend comprises of six vineyards across Napa drawn from Coombsville, Rutherford, and Oak Knoll appellations. This bottle spends 20 months in mixed barrels, 20% of which is new French oak.

Mayacamas, Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder 2018

Mayacamas has stood the test of time with its historic vineyards and cellar set into the Mt. Veeder hillside at a staggering 2500 feet in elevation. The winery was founded in 1889 by a German immigrant couple. While the property has changed hands several times, the recent successor has taken extreme measures to retain a sense of finesse, concentration and balance. As recent as 2012, the winery has taken a step back by learning to not lean on new oak usage, instead opting for their used older casks. They continue to replant with new vines while organic and dry-farming remain a focus. Maycamas remains a benchmark producer, “the last man standing” from the glory days of California winemaking.

This is another impeccable vintage from Mayacamas. You could open now, but ideally you should give this another 5 or 10 before pulling the cork.

According to Matt Murphy, co-founder, and president of Presqui’le winery, the greatest wineries are multigenerational family endeavors. In fact, the family is very close and loves doing things together, including his sister Anna, the enologist. Anna and Matt both grew up around the family’s farm in Louisiana, which was the forerunner for their interest in winemaking. Dieter Cronje, winemaker for Presqu’ile, has quite the prestigious resumé. While on a mission to gain a more global perspective, he did an exchange program with the University of Bordeaux and traveled extensively through Burgundy and Champagne to gain more understanding of Pinot Noir. After working with Matt Murphy at the Ambullneo winery and sharing many late-night bottles of Burgundy, they realized they worked well together. Matt then decided that Dieter would be a great fit as winemaker for Presqu’ile.

This mineral-driven Sauvignon Blanc comes from Dairy Vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley. The wine is aged in french barrels, steel and concrete with each vessel affecting the wine in different ways.

Brij, Grenache Rose 2023

While we’ve worked with wines from Rajat Parr for year (cue Evening Land, Sandhi, DDLC), the new project Phelan Farm has a new aim. The goal here is regenerative farming with its home base in the coastal region of Cambria at Steiner Lake. In this journey, he uses varieties one might use in the Savoie or Jura regions of France, Gruner, Syrah or even sometimes using apples as the base. The fruit is often estate fruit, though it is often purchased from other trusted farmer friends. The wines show American terroir through the lens of a European. The production is miniscule and the wines are special.

This 100% Grenache rose comes from vines in San Louis Obispo County. After harvest the grapes direct-pressed with the slightest skin-contact and fermented in 2000L foudre. Unfined, unfiltered and no added SO2.

Steve Matthiasson is a California pioneer. Daring to break Napa tradition, Steve and his wife Jill have planted rare, ancient Italian grapes though recognize that Napa loves all the well-known international grapes. A Matthiasson tasting experience, laid out on the picnic table that separates their home from the winemaking operation (with their dog and at least one son stopping by!) shows instantly how the couple reveres the place they farm together. This is real California wine and Matthiasson’s wines are where California wine is headed. Steve Matthiasson is a six-time nominee for a James Beard award, a serious achievement in the wine industry. Anthill Farms, Pinot Noir Campbell Ranch Vineyard 2021

Anthill Farms is a group of three friends who went against all the odds to start a winery in California. They didn’t have money saved nor were they born into the business. They were cellar rats, the guys moving hoses and cleaning floors, for some pretty significant wineries, Williams Selyem being the most influential. However, while still quite young, the three decided to pull together a tiny amount of cash and started making wine at a crushpad facility. Before long the wines had a cult following and we’ve been drinking them ever since. Many of Anthill’s wines only make it to a mailing list or restaurants; we are lucky to include their small production wines.

Campbell Ranch Vineyard is a short way from the Pacific and farmed by Steve Campbell. At 750 feet above sea level, this site sits on the very edge of the residual marine layer from the Pacific. It’s another of the Anthill Farm’s choices for a cool coastal, late-ripening style. The vines are about twenty years old, low yielding, sitting atop Goldridge soil. This site farms both Pinot Noir and Syrah for Anthill Farms.
