Monte Bernardi, Tzingarella 2017Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00
Variety: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Colorino
The Monte Bernardi estate dates back to 1085. The property’s vineyards are situated in the hilly, southern-most region of Panzano, an area that has been acknowledged as one of the “Grand Cru” of Chianti Classico. Most of the vineyards are more than 40 years old. Before 1992, when the first wines were produced, the grapes were sold to neighboring farms. The Schmelzer family, originally from Michigan, purchased Monte Bernardi in 2003. As winemaker, Michael has invested “time, love and money in the vineyards, the winery and villa” (www.montebernardi.com). The property was certified biodynamic in 2004.
This medium-bodied wine is fruity and richly complex, with smooth tannins, fresh acidity, and a touch of Tuscan cherry accenting the Bordeaux-grape character of fresh cassis, blackberries and minerality as well as sweet spices from oak aging. Drink now or hold up to 10 years.
Tenuta di Carleone, Meticcio 2018Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00
Variety: Cabernet Franc and Merlot
Tenuta Carleone di Castiglioni was first mentioned in the year 1078 when monks first founded it in Chianti, named for the village of Castiglioni meaning “small castle.” The property is a romantic vision of wooded hills, rivers, and fertile plains. Nestled in between the hills are the Sangiovese vines and olive trees. Though the property was farmed for hundreds of years, it did not become the winery of Tenuta di Carleone until 2012. Karl Egger and Sean O’Callaghan both operate the winery with a clear vision, making Sangiovese in a classic way, though with Sean’s twist. Nothing is added to the wine, grappa, or cold-pressed olive oils. Keep an eye on their other Sangiovese expressions, Il Guercio, Uno, Chianti Classico, and their grappa of Sangiovese named “Zero.”
Tenuta Maccan, Cabernet Franc 2018Regular price $18.00 Save $-18.00
Variety: Cabernet Franc
The Maccan family has sustained three generations of winemakers in Friuli Grave, a region located in the northeastern area of Italy. The owner, Stefano Maccan, sums up the family’s vision with this quote, “My family’s passion for farming grew inside me until it became something more than mere curiosity and turned into determination... the determination to finally produce my own family wine.” Even though the Maccan family had been making wine dating back to 1788, it wasn’t until 2012 that Tenuta Maccan was an established domain. The family creates other bottlings including Chardonnay, a classic Ramato Pinot Grigio, Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon Blanc, Refosco, and Pinot Nero. Here, the Maccan team pays homage to tradition while innovating with their organic and certified sustainable farming techniques.
