Julien Braud, Rose Pinot Noir, Val de Loire 2022
Regular price $18.00 Save $-18.00Variety : Pinot Noir
Julien Braud is an exciting young winemaker, one of the few next generation winemakers in Sevre et Maine, who has taken over part of his family's estate with the mission of pushing the limits of Muscadet and its identity grape, Melon de Bourgogne. The area in general has seen a decline in producers and vineyards in recent years, but Julien Braud is on a mission to bring emphasis and notoriety back to this area, and so far is undeterred! Not only is he farming sustainably and recently certified organic, he brings a quality-minded approach and a sense of whimsy to an otherwise neglected area. His wines effectively over-deliver in quality at their modest price points.

Peter Lauer, Riesling Barrel X 2021
Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00Variety: Riesling
Peter Lauer is one of the best winemakers in all of Germany. The reality is his style is completely focused. He takes Riesling, one of the most misunderstood grape varieties on the market, and creates wines with serious expression. The wines are textural, focused, and fairly serious. Riesling, for many, is considered sweet, fruity, and playful even, but here it is in a style that finds itself in the same conversation as classified white Burgundy. No one else is making wine like this. So when we say seize the opportunity when his wines are available, do that.
This is from the Lauer lineup called the ‘Terroir’ wines where the fruit is sourced from three vineyards from the Saar area of the Mosel river valley. The wine by default is off-dry, though it’s hardly noticeable with the wine’s soaring acidity and minerality. According to importer Vom Boden, Barrel X is a “silly value.”

Cantine Barbera, Menfi Nero d'Avola Lu Cori 2022
Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00Variety: Nero d'Avola
Marilena Barbera is proprietor and winemaker at Cantine Barbera, a boutique winery located in Menfi, on the Southwest coast of Sicily. Her family has been grape producers for three generations. From her grandfather who planted the first indigenous vineyards in the early 1920’s to her father who walked in his parent’s footsteps and selected the grape varieties which would best adapt to the land’s micro-climatic conditions. Her commitment is to produce high quality wines only with the grapes grown and selected in their 30 hectares in Tenuta Belicello, only a few steps away from the Mediterranean Sea while continuing to carry on her father’s dream.
This wine is made from 100% Nero d’Avola, a native grape hailing from Sicily that can be found throughout the wine world. Marilena opts for a feminine and sensual approach of this variety instead of the more popular sturdy, masculine styles.

Ampeleia, IGT Maremma 2019
Regular price $57.00 Save $-57.00Variety: Cabernet Franc
Ampeleia was born only just in 2002 from the collaboration and friendship between noteworthy icons—Elisabetta Foradori, Thomas Widmann, and Giovanni Podini. They created a place where they could not only develop an agricultural project but also fulfill a common dream. The estate comprises different plots of land, each located far apart and on different altitude levels—their mission is to create variables in altitude, soil type and microclimatic conditions. Variety is the spice of life, at least Ampeleia, representing the project’s constant quality and willingness to discover. The grape varieties that have been planted are common to Mediterranean vineyards reflecting the tradition of growing multiple varieties in the same vineyard. Today, the estate extends over three altitude levels and covers 35 hectares of vineyard.
This is high altitude Cabernet Franc from the Ampeleia di Sopra vineyard. The grapes are fully destemmed and fermentation is done in cement tanks and large oak tasks, resulting in a pure, clean, and fruity wine. The wine then ages for two years in bottle before it is released.

This Cabernet Franc hails from “La Rocca” vineyard, which refers to the site being a natural fortress ringing in at 500 meters altitude. This wine is a celebration of the wine as a monovarietal, which shows off the clay-limstone and schist soils from which it hails. On a clear day, the island of Corsica can be seen while standing in La Rocca vineyard.

Giuseppe Russo left his native Sicily for a time, trained as a pianist and music teacher, and studied literature. But when his father, Girolamo, died, Giuseppe returned in 2005 to make “the best wines (I) can in this exceptional, often challenging but uniquely beautiful area.” Although the Russo family calls the area in and around Passopisciaro home, it is an interesting and dynamic place that is attracting winemakers from the all over the world. The Russos have 26 hectares of land, 15 planted to vineyards and the rest to olives and hazelnut groves. Their vineyards are on the north face of Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, in the north-eastern corner of Sicily.
'A Rina' comes from various contradas, notably San Lorenzo, Feudo, Calderara Sottana, Feudo di Mezzo. Vines range in age from 20 to 100 years old. Ageing is done between oak and concrete for about one year.

Matthiasson, Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2019
Regular price $90.00 Save $-90.00Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc
Steve Matthiasson is a California pioneer. Daring to break Napa tradition, Steve and his wife Jill have planted rare, ancient Italian grapes though recognize that Napa loves all the well-known international grapes. A Matthiasson tasting experience, laid out on the picnic table that separates their home from the winemaking operation (with their dog and at least one son stopping by!) shows instantly how the couple reveres the place they farm together. This is real California wine and Matthiasson’s wines are where California wine is headed. Steve Matthiasson is a six-time nominee for a James Beard award, a serious achievement in the wine industry. He has also been named “Winemaker of the Year” by both Food & Wine Magazine and The San Francisco Chronicle. Steve and Jill are long time friends and mentors to Hart & Cru.
This bottle is a classic example of how Cabernet Sauvignon blends well with its other Bordeaux variety friends—small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The blend comprises of six vineyards across Napa drawn from Coombsville, Rutherford, and Oak Knoll appellations. This bottle spends 20 months in mixed barrels, 20% of which is new French oak.

Le Fraghe, Bardolino Chiaretto Rosato 'Rodon' 2022
Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00Variety: Corvina and Rondinella
As a young girl, Matilde Poggi, grew up around winemaking and hearing her parents talk about it. During October, she would go straight from school to the vineyards to help with the harvest. Her first harvest was in 1984, prior to that, the grapes were sold to another winery. Matilde is passionate about the surrounding terroir of valleys, rivers, winds from the north, and the mountainous areas that makes her wines uniquely their own. Her 3 daughters now help her run the winery. They have been certified organic since 2009.
“Chiaretto” comes from the word chiaro, meaning pale or light, which describes this rose perfectly. Made mostly from the Corvina grape variety, and made in a style more reminiscent of a white wine, Rodòn is a well-loved rose representing the Bardolino Chiaretto style of Lake Guarda.

Tenuta di Carleone, Chianti Classico 2020
Regular price $34.00 Save $-34.00Variety: Sangiovese
Tenuta Carleone di Castiglioni was first mentioned in the year 1078 when monks first founded it in Chianti, named for the village of Castiglioni meaning “small castle.” The property is a romantic vision of wooded hills, rivers, and fertile plains. Nestled in between the hills are the Sangiovese vines and olive trees. Though the property was farmed for hundreds of years, it did not become the winery of Tenuta di Carleone until 2012. Karl Egger and Sean O’Callaghan both operate the winery with a clear vision, making Sangiovese in a classic way, though with Sean’s twist. Nothing is added to the wine, grappa, or cold-pressed olive oils. Keep an eye on their other Sangiovese expressions, Il Guercio, Uno, Chianti Classico, and their grappa of Sangiovese named “Zero.”

Tenuta La Farnete, Barco Reale DOC di Carmignano 2021
Regular price $17.00 Save $-17.00Variety: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon
Carmignano is an Italian wine region located in the Tuscany region and centered on the city of Carmignano, about 10 miles northwest of Florence. In the 18th century, the producers of the Carmignano region developed a tradition of blending Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, long before the practice became popularized by the "Super Tuscan" of the late 20th century. The Pierazzuoli Family has had the Farnete estate since 1990. The property is located in the town of Carmignano near the town of Firenze. The family operates another property in Carmignano, as well as overseeing an osteria, farmhouse, and their own olive oil production. Their wines continue to win multiple Gambero Rosso ratings.
This wine took its name from the 2 meters high and 52 Km long wall surrounding (Barco Reale) that the Medici had raised in 1626 to delimit the area and one can say that this has been the first natural reserve of Italy. The Sangiovese & Cabernet are fermented in stainless steel then assembled together for release the following Autumn.

COS, Nero di Lupo 2021
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00Variety: Nero d’Avola
Giusto Occhipinti of COS is one of the most critical names in Italy. COS was founded by three friends to make traditional wine with respect for the place the grapes are grown. During their first harvest in 1980, they were the youngest wine producers in Italy. The acronym of their three last names forms “COS.” They were early adopters to Biodynamic farming, starting a movement on the island, which are still golden standards. The friends are hard workers, using an old winery given to them by a family friend and opting to use terracotta vases for ageing, a completely neutral vessel. Sicily has just one DOCG—Cerasuolo di Vittoria; the friends were the first winery to bottle a DOCG wine in Sicily. COS is located in Vittoria, the farthest tip of southeastern Sicily. The area recalls that of Africa, with its climate and land of red, ochre, and yellow tones.
This is Nero d’Avola coming from their estate vineyards in Vittoria from red clay soils. Ageing is completed between concrete tanks and in the bottle.

Monte Bernardi, Chianti Classico Retromarcia 2021
Regular price $28.00 Save $-28.00Variety: Sangiovese
Even though the estate Monte Bernardi dates back to 1085 in the region of Panzano in Tuscany, Michael Schmelzer and family purchased the estate in 2003 and have been making beautiful Sangiovese-based wines and olive oil ever since. The property’s vineyards are situated in the hilly, southern-most region of Panzano, an area that has been acknowledged as one of the “Grand Crus” of Chianti Classico. Most of the vineyards are more than 40 years old. Before 1992, the grapes were sold to neighboring farms. The Schmelzer family, originally from Michigan, purchased Monte Bernardi in 2003. As winemaker, Michael has invested time, love and money in the vineyards, the winery and villa. The property was certified biodynamic in 2004.
Retromarcia is more than the sum of its parts; its name is an ode to the classic elegance of the historic style of Chianti. Sangiovese shines on its own in this wine coming from vines planted between 2003 and 2010 from estate fruit in Panzano. Ageing is completed over 18 months in large casks. This is fresh and fruity, though with well-balanced acidity and structure.

Proprieta Sperino, Coste della Sesia Uvaggio 2018
Regular price $43.00 Save $-43.00Variety: Nebbiolo, Vespolina, Croatina
Stated as “a courageous wine growing archaeology project, that speaks of passion. Proprieta Sperino is the realization of a dream: to restore the important tradition of Lessona wines by recovering the historic cellars to produce a wine with the greatest respect for local tradition.” This is the undertaking of famed winemaker, Paolo di Marchi, a pursuit that defines the second portion of his wine career. Paolo gained recognition at his Tuscan property, Isole e Olena, and now he wants to revive the Northern Piemonte site that has been in his family for years. This project was started in 1999 and now Paolo, with his son Luca, are producing classic wines from these incredible vineyards, which have a history dating back to the early 1800’s. It is exciting to see work going back into the region to make it great again.
This Nebbiolo, Vespolina, and Croatina blend comes from a small DOC nestled next to the Bramaterra and Lessona appellations. “Uvaggio” is the traditional name for a blend made with different grape varieties. Coste della Sesia Rosso is the name of this appellation from Alta Piedmonte, sitting right next to Bramaterra and Lessona. The wine ages in a combination of barrique, barrel, and oval for 18 months before ageing in the bottle for several months prior to its release.

G.D. Vajra, N.S. Della Neve, Extra Brut, Metodo Classico Rosato NV
Regular price $38.00 Save $-38.00Variety: Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir
The G.D. Vajra winery was created in 1972 by Aldo and Milena Vaira, initially from vineyards planted by Aldo’s father in 1947. The winery was named for Aldo’s father, Giuseppe Domenico Vajra, because at the time Aldo was not old enough to establish the winery in his own name. Today the family has 40 hectares under vine in Barolo and other surrounding appellations. Their prized holdings in Bricco delle Viole were planted in 1949 by Aldo’s grandfather. Milena and Aldo’s three children – Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro – are all involved in the family winery operation situated in the village of Vergne. The family is hard-working, passionate, and caring. Their focus is on building something for their children, caring about the community, and cementing the stories of the regions’ past. The family is longtime friends of Hart & Cru. They continue to uphold their passion for quality wine and the people who surround them.
The story behind the wine began with Thomas Jefferson when he was French ambassador and often traveled to Piedmont. During his visits, he drank Nebbiolo and proclaimed that it was as brisk as Champagne. The Vajra family later challenged this statement by making a wine with both Nebbiolo and the Champagne grape, Pinot Noir, as its blend. This bottle gets its name from the chapel that sits on the slopes of the vineyards: “Nostra Signora Della Neve” which means "Our Lady of the Snow" referring to the barren soil which still produces beautiful fruit from this site.

Fratelli Alessandria, Barolo 2018
Regular price $68.00 Save $-68.00Variety: Nebbiolo
Fratelli Alessandria is one of the stars of Verduno. The Alessandria family – owner Gian Battista, his wife Flavia, brother Alessandro, and son Vittore – lovingly produce a robust range of Piedmont specialty wines from start to finish. The farmer of the group, Gian’s philosophy is “the best wine comes from a great vineyard.” Located in the town of Verduno, in the commune of Barolo, the property has operated as a winery since the early 19th century. The wines were winning prizes as early as 1843. The original Alessandria brothers (fratelli) purchased the property in 1870. There is a deep understanding of how to work the vines in the marl soils they call “Sant’Agata,” a mixture of silt, limestone and sand. The Alessandria family first released their wine in 1978. Their style has always been classic, along with the grapes of the region; they never shifted towards a modernist hand.
This Barolo showcases the harmony of the blending style that is classic to the region. Today’s Barolo are more often made into a cru style, this bottle is a blend of several vineyards from Monforte d’Alba and Verduno. It is aged and cellared in the winery’s standard way: three years in Slavonian oak, two months in steel, and six months in bottle.

Tenuta Maccan, Pinot Grigio 2022
Regular price $19.00 Save $-19.00Varietal: Pinot Grigio
The Maccan family has sustained three generations of winemakers in Friuli Grave, a region located in the northeastern area of Italy. The owner, Stefano Maccan, sums up the family’s vision with this quote, “My family’s passion for farming grew inside me until it became something more than mere curiosity and turned into determination... the determination to finally produce my own family wine.” Even though the Maccan family had been making wine dating back to 1788, it wasn’t until 2012 that Tenuta Maccan was an established domain. The Maccan team pays homage to tradition while innovating with their organic and certified sustainable farming techniques.
This Pinot Grigio has a short skin maceration of 24-48 hours, which imparts a gentle amberish gold tone to the wine. The wine aged further on its lees in stainless steel tanks. It is floral and gently fruity while having a definitive richness, lending itself well to lighter fish and rice dishes.

Brand, Trocken Riesling 2022 · 1 Liter
Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00Variety: Riesling
The brothers Brand, Daniel and Jonas, are defining growth of organic and little to no-intervention range of whites and reds. Hailing in the Pfalz region of Germany is a lesser known village, Bockenheim, known for its quiet, rugged and gritty agriculture. The Brand brothers are fifth generation winemakers and took over production from their father. The hand logo on many of their labels may look like the peace sign at first glance; however, it is an oath taken by the brothers representing their emotional relationship to their region and furthermore, a symbol for quality in the bottle and close connection with nature. The wines are all organic and have little to no sulphites added.
The Riesling is flowery on the nose, but peach and citric fruit leap out of the glass. There is a distinct vein of minerality running through wine, which finishes bone dry and extremely refreshing.

4 Monos, Vinos de Madrid "GR 10" Tinto 2020
Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00Variety: Garnacha, Carignan, and Syrah
4 Monos means “4 monkeys” and refers to four friends and lovers of wine native to the region of Madrid. This “gang of four” assembled in an extraordinary manner, while hiking in the Gredos mountains. This is a landscape that is a meeting of Mediterranean and Alpine; the region is often deemed magical for its beauty and diversity. The 4 Monos, with various backgrounds, have a unified mentality: organic wine practice, minimalism in the cellar, a focus on the land and variances in terroir. While the friends only founded 4 Monos in 2009, they are bringing the potential of the Gredos terroir to the world’s attention.
The GR-10 is named after one of the most famous walking trails of the Iberian Peninsula, linking Lisbon to Valencia. As the 4 Monos met while hiking, it is only natural they named their wine for a trail. This is a village level wine with the vineyards sourced from Cadalso de los Vidrios, San Martín de Valdeiglesias, and Cenicientos, a true Vinos de Madrid. The grapes are half whole cluster and half destemmed (different from their other wines which are all whole cluster fermented). The wine is then aged in neutral barrels of various sizes for nine months before release.

Ca' La Bionda, Valpolicella Classico 2021
Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00Variety: Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara
There are many regions in Italy that show the detrimental hand of western trends. Amarone is, and should be, one of the great wines of Italy. However, finding one that still tastes genuinely Italian can be tricky. Ca’La Bionda is located in the historic “classic” zone of the Valpolicella region. Founded in 1902, the family’s focus has always been on the grapes and the vineyard work. They presently cultivate 25 hectares. Alessandro Castellani is the current, fourth-generation winemaker. His wines are held in six-foot-tall oak casks until ready to drink. Certain wines are aged longer than others. But at every step of the way, attention is given to tradition, as opposed to modern, quick winemaking. Alessandro’s wines rarely receive much mainstream press, which is fine by him.
This is a more elegant version of Valpolicella, the classic blending of the usual grapes. The fruit comes from the “classic” zone of Valpolicella. Fermentation is done first in stainless, then in bottle for another three months before the wine is released.

Presqu'ile Winery, Chardonnay 2022
Regular price $25.00 Save $-25.00Variety: Chardonnay
According to Matt Murphy, co-founder, and president of Presqui’le winery, the greatest wineries are multigenerational family endeavors. In fact, the family is very close and loves doing things together, including his sister Anna, the enologist. Anna and Matt both grew up around the family’s farm in Louisiana, which was the forerunner for their interest in winemaking. Dieter Cronje, winemaker for Presqu’ile, has quite the prestigious resumé. While on a mission to gain a more global perspective, he did an exchange program with the University of Bordeaux and traveled extensively through Burgundy and Champagne to gain more understanding of Pinot Noir. After working with Matt Murphy at the Ambullneo winery and sharing many late-night bottles of Burgundy, they realized they worked well together. Matt then decided that Dieter would be a great fit as winemaker for Presqu’ile.

Anthill Farms, Chardonnay Peugh Vineyard 2021
Regular price $60.00 Save $-60.00Variety: Chardonnay
Anthill Farms is a group of three friends who went against all the odds to start a winery in California. They didn’t have money saved nor were they born into the business. They were cellar rats, the guys moving hoses and cleaning floors, for some pretty significant wineries, Williams Selyem being the most influential. However, while still quite young, the three decided to pull together a tiny amount of cash and started making wine at a crushpad facility. Before long the wines had a cult following and we’ve been drinking them ever since. Many of Anthill’s wines only make it to a mailing list or restaurants; we are lucky to include their small production wines.
Peugh Vineyard, located in the middle of the Russian River Valley, has head-trained Chardonnay vines, something rarely seen for this variety. This is normally used on crazy, rocky soils with Syrah, Grenache or Mourvedre, but not Chardonnay. The reason this happened is the vines were planted in the early 1940s when California growers had no idea what they were doing. The result today is that this unique Chardonnay is produced from some of the oldest vines in the entire state.

Chantal Lescure, Nuits-Saint-Georges 'Les Damodes' 2020
Regular price $90.00 Save $-90.00Variety: Pinot Noir
The Lescure Domaine is among the newer winemaking families, but just as fierce. Chantal Lescure was begun in 1975 by Chantal and her husband Xavier. They claimed 18 hectares of land strewn throughout Chambolle-Musigny in the Cote de Nuits and the Volnay in Cote de Beaune. Today their two sons coordinate the running of the estate and farm from parcels running from Dijon in the north to Meursault in the south. The Domaine takes organic farming very seriously, as they have been practicing full organics since 2000; they're even certified by Ecocert.
A harmonious balance of red and black fruits, licorice and mint, chalky tannins and a whisper of oak. Les Damodes is a limestone vineyard named for the splicing of “les dames hautes”, rocks looking like tall ladies, as elegant as this wine.
