The Defaix family is a fourth generation of a family of vine-growers rich in personality. Bernard Defaix started the vineyard in 1959 with 2 ha. Vineyard holdings across the Chablis region of Burgundy have expanded to 27 ha including three Premier Cru vineyards (Côte de Léchet, Vaillons and Lys) and others in the Chablis and Petit Chablis appellations. Bernard’s sons Sylvain and Didier have been managing the domain for about twenty years, handling winemaking and vineyard operations, respectively. Didier’s wife, Helene, handles administration and sales. Although this is a small property – common in France – the Defaix family undertook an extensive study of their vineyard soils to better understand vine root systems and the impact of mechanized vineyard operations. From 2012, they have been producing organic wines.

This is an approachable Pinot Noir classified as an AOC Bourgogne Rouge bottling. The vines come exclusively from a vineyard in Auxerre, which is just outside of Chablis. It is simply aged in 2-3 year old barrels to optimize the freshness of the fruit. This is a wine to drink now and with all manner of food.

An Oregon yankee in King Chenin’s Court??? Brendan Stater-West may have never imagined his name on a bottle of Loire Valley Chenin Blanc when he took the job at the Paris wine shop that ignited his passions, but it is a reality now. He may have never imagined apprenticing under the winemaker of the particular bottle that sparked that ignition of passion, but that also happened. That same bottle of Guiberteau led him to the producer Romain Guiberteau and Saumur, where he begged Romain for a job in the vineyards. It was Romain who leased him a plot, allowing him to begin his own domaine! Fast forward a few years and now Brendan owns his own property in Bizay where he creates his Chenin expressions from grapes grown in the ‘tuffeau’ limestone that creates the bedrock layer for which Saumur is famous.

This 100% Chenin Blanc wine is vinified whole cluster in stainless steel vats. After initial fermentation the juice is moved to oak barrels for 12 months. The wine is then racked back into stainless holding vats until bottling. Using only natural yeast, with no fermentation agents added, this wine is truly crafted by the land and grape itself, with Brendan as its steward.

In the third generation of the winemaking Broccardo family, siblings Fillipo, Federica, and Laura choose to follow in the steps of their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. The goal remains the same, which is to say they haven’t changed much of anything at all; there is only a stronger push forward with organic practices. The Broccardo wines strive to elegantly express the precise minerality typical of their native soils. With prime vineyard positions in Monforte d’Alba, Barolo, and Novello, the task is no chore. The grapes do the work themselves, and are simply ushered, with slight hand, from vine to cellar to bottle.

San Pietro is a single cru in the southern part of Monforte d'Alba commune. It ages for 24 months in used Slavonian oak. More round than austere, this punchy Barolo is red fruit tart with lingering tannins.

The Brovia family has been making wine since the 19th century, then there was a significant period where no wine was made for almost thirty years due to a plethora of reasons like the two world wars, tragedy, and of course the great phylloxera plague. Now onto their fourth generation with force, the Brovia family has come back with more force than ever while making wines that are among the allocated and remain timeless. They have some of the best vineyard sites of Barolo at their fingertips and continue making thoughtful wines in the classic style. Every member of the family plays a part in this historic winemaking entity.

The vines were planted in 1955 and make a Barolo with distinctive fruit and personality. The vineyard is from the family’s oldest plot dated back to 1955 in Serralunga d’Alba. The wine ages for two years in both French and Slavonian oak barrels before release.

The Bianco family has quite a family history rooted in both Verduno in Barolo as well as Barbaresco. This family project is located in the Verduno commune of Barolo which is the northernmost part of Barolo known for its elegance. While they specialize in the classics of Piedmont, they have a soft spot for the specialty of Verduno, the light, pale and spicy Pelaverga. The winemaking marries modern and traditional together making for a winery that’s still under the radar.

Coming from the Massara Vineyard just south of the great Monvigliero vineyard, this is Nebbiolo at its best. The vines are 30+ years old and the wine ages in large Slavonian oak for almost three years with an additional 21 months in bottle before release.

As the wine world talks about Catherine and Pierre Breton, one will hear them referenced as "real life bon vivants vignerons." I love this description so much as it perfectly captures the soul of this married couple. From the beginning, they have truly wanted to have fun in life and to make unadulterated natural wines long before the hipness of the natural wine scene took hold. Recently, they started the three-year process of seeking biodynamic certification. In fact, they have become international icons for the natural wine movement in an area where the climate and soil can make organic practices difficult. They are based in Bourgueil in the Loire Valley and have an impressive spread of vineyards ranging in soils and vine age. One might say the innovative couple is well ahead of the game and doing it with charm and grace.

Farmed entirely biodynamically, this wine come from relatively young vines grown in clay and limestone. Aged for 11 months in 600 liter barrels.

Variety: Chenin Blanc

As the wine world talks about Catherine and Pierre Breton, one will hear them referenced as "real life bon vivants vignerons." I love this description so much as it perfectly captures the soul of this married couple. From the beginning, they have truly wanted to have fun in life and to make unadulterated natural wines long before the hipness of the natural wine scene took hold. Recently, they started the three-year process of seeking biodynamic certification. In fact, they have become international icons for the natural wine movement in an area where the climate and soil can make organic practices difficult. They are based in Bourgueil in the Loire Valley and have an impressive spread of vineyards ranging in soils and vine age. One might say the innovative couple is well ahead of the game and doing it with charm and grace.

Even though the power couple shares the vineyard and cellar duties, the Vouvray project is one that Catherine calls her own. The vines for this Chenin are 40 years old and undergo a short time in stainless steel before being released in the spring. Though many Vouvrays age well, this one will continue to age but also is meant to enjoy immediately.

The year was 1997. A world-renowned winemaker had just shown Christopher Cannan and his wife, Charlotte, an abandoned vineyard just north of the Gratallops called “Figueres.” That same day, the entire Cannan family piled into their car and followed the winemaker, post-haste, to Barcelona. At a simple café, the Cannan’s purchased the 100-hectare estate. Initially, the terrain of the previously abandoned vineyards had to be prepared for planting. (A nearby grove of century-old olive trees needed to be re-worked as well.) Both undertakings were just the beginning of what would become the Cannan family’s quest. They traveled extensively in their spare time to work under some of the best winemakers in the world. Today, their combination of passion for the property and skill in the cellar sets these wines above the rest.

“Font de la Figuera” means fig tree fountain in the Catalan language, as can be seen on the label. The blend is classic to what the region of Priorat does well. All the fruit is destemmed except for some of the Syrah. The wine goes on to age for 12 months in French oak.

This wine evokes the high altitude of Priorat and the Mediterranean climate found in Priorat. The Viognier undergoes a gentle maceration on its skins. The fermentation begins in both stainless steel and French oak, then ages in steel.

The Boiron family settled in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 1650. Farmers by trade, the land always incorporated a few vineyards but for the most paert focused on crop production. Third generation Marie-Antoinette Boiron married Marceau Cellier and upon passing over the land to their three children ‘Domaine Des 3 Celliers’ was born! Today brothers Ludovic, Julien, and Benoit run the estate, combining ancestral and progressive farming techniques. They closely monitor the estate’s energy consumption, use only local bottlers and printers in order to cut down on their carbon footprint, and are constantly striving to find ways to better treat the land that has given them so much. The estate was certified organic in 2016.

The estate is comprised of just 13.4 hectares of vine. After manual harvest from 45 year old vines, the wine is aged for 10 months in foudre.

E. Pira e Figli, Barolo Via Nuova Chiara Boschis 2019 MAGNUM 1.5L

Variety: Nebbiolo

It would not be doing Chiara Boschis justice to say she is simply a great winemaker; she is a human of undeniable confidence, fortitude, and charm. This comes through in her wines as well. She concentrates primarily on the regional Nebbiolo grape while contrasting her family’s centuries of traditional male-dominated winemaking. Chiara takes a rebellious path, employing green harvesting, shorter fermentations, and the use of small French oak casks. The amount of new oak used on her cru Nebbiolos has decreased from 80% to 50%. Even her first wine, 1990 Barolo Riserva Cannubi was an incredible success. The winery became certified organic in 2014. Taking this a step further, she was able to convince 80% of the winemakers in the neighboring Cannubi to switch to organic as well!

Prior to 2009, Via Nuova was the common name of the vineyard behind Chiara’s cellar in Barolo. Under new wine law, the vineyard became known as Terlo. At this time, Chiara decided to stop producing Via Nuova as a single vineyard expression, and instead make it a classic Barolo blend from all of her plots; thus reiterating the name “Via Nuova” as the new way. The blending of several vineyard sites was common with Barolo producers until the 1960s, when the single vineyard bottlings took off. Ironically, “Via Nuova” represents the new way with a nod to old-time tradition.

One of their largest goals is to look to the future, “an effort to save the world.” Chidaine’s household wines are varying styles of Chenin Blanc from dry to off-dry to sparkling. Their momentum only continues as they seek to better the world around them.

This is a sparkling wine made entirely from Chenin Blanc and made in the ancient style known as a methode traditionelle. The wine ferments in demi muids and ages for three years before release. The vines range in age from 20-50 years old.

Following the lackluster vintage of 2018, the Chidaines outsourced Chenin to make this wine. In a region that produced bulk wine for years, particularly after WWII, the Chidaine duo brought an emphasis to wines of quality and regenerative farming; they also look to natural winemaking. One of their largest goals is to look to the future, “an effort to save the world.” Chidaine’s household wines are varying styles of Chenin Blanc from dry to off-dry to sparkling. Their inspired lineup includes classic reds and whites from the Loire made into vibrant, juicy styles ranging in price points. Their momentum only continues as they seek to better the world around them.

This bottling is a response to the icy 2021 growing season that struck a brutal blow to that year's harvest. The fruit comes from selected estate vineyards with tuffeaux, clay and limestone planted vines owned directly by Chidaine. Vinified in tanks and aged on lees, this wine zips over your palate and tells you its from Touraine!
