Tentenublo is the name given to the ringing of bells aimed at fighting off hailstorms in some Rioja villages. Working organically, using native yeast fermentation, and limited sulphur, winemaker Roberto applies Rioja’s long established custom of barrel aging working mainly with French oak to craft wines of substance and character. The property of Tentenublo, despite its small size, is described as a collection of several distinct microclimates. The vines are spread throughout 22 parcels in the foothills of the Cantabria mountains. The estate is planted mainly to the classic red and white Rioja varieties including Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura. Each site is influenced to some extent by the Ebro River, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

This is the eponymously named bottle representing Roberto Olivan’s flagship bottle. The wine is a nod to the traditional blending of Tempranillo among other red and white varieties.

Nanclares y Prieto, A Senda Vermella Tinto 2021

Variety: Mencia and Caiño

Alberto Nanclares and his wife uprooted from their home in the Basque country to the ocean side village of Castrelo. The small home they purchased incidentally came with some vineyards. While Alberto initially had no plans to make wine, the thought of farming nagged at him, and so, a winemaker was born. He invested in winemaking tools, eventually setting up shop in his garage. Conventional farming then turned into organic and biodynamic, an impressive feat for a region prone to viticultural difficulties, even using seaweed from the nearby Atlantic for composting. Alberto is making incredible grower Albariño, as well as other local varieties at incredible value.

While Nanclares is known for their angular style Albarino, this is a lively red made from the local spicy Mencia and blended with other indigenous varieties. Alcohol is 11.5% and is aged like a red Burgundy almost in mostly used barrels.

Clos Figueras, Font De La Figuera Priorat Tinto 2020

The year was 1997. A world-renowned winemaker had just shown Christopher Cannan and his wife, Charlotte, an abandoned vineyard just north of the Gratallops called “Figueres.” That same day, the entire Cannan family piled into their car and followed the winemaker, post-haste, to Barcelona. At a simple café, the Cannan’s purchased the 100-hectare estate. Initially, the terrain of the previously abandoned vineyards had to be prepared for planting. (A nearby grove of century-old olive trees needed to be re-worked as well.) Both undertakings were just the beginning of what would become the Cannan family’s quest. They traveled extensively in their spare time to work under some of the best winemakers in the world. Today, their combination of passion for the property and skill in the cellar sets these wines above the rest.

“Font de la Figuera” means fig tree fountain in the Catalan language, as can be seen on the label. The blend is classic to what the region of Priorat does well. All the fruit is destemmed except for some of the Syrah. The wine goes on to age for 12 months in French oak.

La Senda Bodegas y Vinedos, Bierzo Vindemiatrix Tinto 2020

Variety: Mencía, Palomino, and Doña Blanca

Diego Losada came along and redefined what wine could be in an appellation that was known for quantity over quality. Having an interest in organic chemistry, he studied this in university with an application to winemaking. The realization occurred that a more philosophical approach to natural winegrowing would further benefit his aesthetic. Thus began “La Senda,” meaning the path or “the way” in Spanish, an ode to his mental winemaking journey. In Bierzo where Diego sources his vines is an important stop for those who traverse the Camino de Santiago, reiterating the concept of this path. He uses older, low yielding vineyards, mostly Mencia, encourages biodiversity among them, and prefers low intervention.

Vindemiatrix is an introduction to the rest of Diego Losada’s talent. Sourced from seven old vine parcels in Bierzo. It is mostly Mencia co-fermented with Palomino and Doña Blanca, both of which are white varieties. This is a true representation of Bierzo wine—light and engaging, and fruit forward with mineral intensity.

Alfredo Maestro, Vina Almate 2022

Alfredo Maestro’s family came to Peñafiel from the Basque Country. Having grown up amongst the vines, he had a great interest in wine and started making his own from an early age. From the beginning, he farmed organically, yet in the cellar he worked literally by the book, teaching himself enology from a textbook, using all the tricks to make a “correct” wine of Ribera del Duero. He would use cultured yeasts, tannins, color enhancers, etc. It took some time, but Alfredo eventually had a revelation—as an organic farmer, why would he use chemicals to adjust the finished wine? It made the most sense for his cellar work to match the integrity which he used in the vineyard—so he did just that. He began eliminating unnecessary products and additives. By 2003 he was making wine without additives whatsoever, including sulfur.

Viña Almate is the first wine that Alfredo made, named after himself (Al-ma-te). This is an entry-level Duero wine made from Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) sourced from various plots. The wine has a serious bit of stem inclusion, resulting in a powerful, spicy, and full-bodied red. It is fermented in stainless steel and spends the winter resting in vats.

Clos Figueras, Priorat 'Clos Figueres' 2018

The year was 1997. A world-renowned winemaker had just shown Christopher Cannan and his wife, Charlotte, an abandoned vineyard just north of the Gratallops called “Figueres.” That same day, the entire Cannan family piled into their car and followed the winemaker, post-haste, to Barcelona. At a simple café, the Cannan’s purchased the 100-hectare estate. Initially, the terrain of the previously abandoned vineyards had to be prepared for planting. (A nearby grove of century-old olive trees needed to be re-worked as well.) Both undertakings were just the beginning of what would become the Cannan family’s quest. They traveled extensively in their spare time to work under some of the best winemakers in the world. Today, their combination of passion for the property and skill in the cellar sets these wines above the rest.

This is ultimately old vine Garnacha and Carignan at its best. While the wine is considered opulent and powerful, often the style of Priorat, there is still French finesse and restraint that comes through in both farming and winemaking. Just 50 cases were imported.

Variety: Listan Negro

Dolores Cabrera is an absolute breath of fresh air on the island of Tenerife, part of the Canary Islands in southern Spain. She is growing Listan Negro and Listan Blanco as her own project which she has named ‘La Araucaria,’ the name of a local evergreen tree found in the Canaries, and also seen on the label of her wines. Her vines can be found in the vine growing area of La Valle de la Orotava. She has done well at persuading all the other local vintners to convert their farming to organic. The team consists of her husband, Pedro, who assists in the cellar, and a team of women that help her with the harvest.

The volcanic ash from these slopes comes through in the wines. The juice undergoes a whole cluster carbonic maceration and ages completely in stainless steel.

Envínate (Wine Yourself) has turned into a unicorn winery, producing wines people talk and read about but never can find or buy. The gang of four friends behind these bottles met while studying enology in Alicante, Spain. After graduating, they formed a wine consulting business to find lost, old vineyards and indigenous grapes and start producing wines from these sites and grapes. The aim has been no chemicals, handwork, and indigenous yeast only. The end product has been incredible and the sommelier world has latched on. Now the wines are in high demand but very little is produced.

One of Envinate's newer bottlings, the 'La Santa' vineyards can be found in Tacorante Acentejo on the northern part of Tenerife. The plots are mostly comprised of sandy clay over red basalt. The grapes see partial carbonic maceration and are then aged in neural French barrels for about 8 months.

Antonio Sanz began making his own wines in Navarra in 1989. After 2007, his sons then joined him in winemaking where they continue their father’s quest for making good wine starting in the vineyard. In their work, they create wines from local grape varieties that have almost been forgotten. The family is actually recognized for their work in bringing the Graciano variety back to life. While their focus was on the region of Navarra up until 2014, they began to bring on other vineyard sites from the DOC Rioja.

This Garnacha is one of the single vineyard, terroir-driven sites from Zorzal coming from Navarra. The vines are 35 years in age coming from a high altitude of over 520 meters. The Garnacha has undergone an early harvest and spent nine months in two-year-old French oak.

Brought to you by a couple of the exquisite minds behind Clos Figueras, Anne Cannan—daughter to wine exporter Christopher Cannan, and Miquel Compte, comes this passion project located in Montsant, just outside of Priorat. The vines are sourced from the Pinyana area of Montsant, where Miquel’s family owned vines, a place of rustic beauty with verdant forests covering jagged rocky formations. It is easy to see what inspired this project. Miquel is in charge of viticulture while Anne is in charge of winemaking. Their focus is red and white Grenache from old vines; French in style, but distinctly Montsant.

This is almost like a baby Priorat red. Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah come together from vines around 40 years in age. Ageing is completed for seven months in French and American oak casks. Paying homage to the style of the region, this Montsant is juicy and minerally.

Alfredo Maestro, El Rey del Glam 2021

Alfredo Maestro’s family came to Peñafiel from the Basque Country. Having grown up amongst the vines, he had a great interest in wine and started making his own from an early age. From the beginning, he farmed organically, yet in the cellar he worked literally by the book, teaching himself enology from a textbook, using all the tricks to make a “correct” wine of Ribera del Duero. He would use cultured yeasts, tannins, color enhancers, etc. It took some time, but Alfredo eventually had a revelation—as an organic farmer, why would he use chemicals to adjust the finished wine? It made the most sense for his cellar work to match the integrity which he used in the vineyard—so he did just that. He began eliminating unnecessary products and additives. By 2003 he was making wine without additives whatsoever, including sulfur.

The bottle name means "The King of Glam!" This is Garnacha harvested from two different plots, one in the Gredos mountains and the other in Ribera del Duero. The winemaking included both whole cluster fermentation and carbonic maceration. Due to its ageing in vats and low sulfur addition, this Garnacha is meant to be consumed immediately.

Pares Balta, `Indigena` 2021

Pares Balta has been a family owned winery since 1790 in one form or another. However the tiny revolutions that made it what it is today began in the early 20th century.

Joan Cusine Hill was the patriarch who took his love of vine cultivation to another level and in the process, set his family up for a strong generational pattern of innovation and attention to detail in winemaking. He oversaw the building of the estate’s barrel room and famed Cava cellar, holding a constant 15 degrees C by being 10 meters underground since the early 20th century. That was the first revolution.

The second revolution was when Joan’s son, Joan took over in the 80’s. His brother Josep soon joined and the brothers’ wives Elena Jiménez and Marta Casas brought their winemaking expertise to this iteration of generational revolution. This time the revolution was biodynamic and low-intervention. It also included expansion to other appellations: Priorat, Ribera del Duero and Dominio Romano. They planted garnatxa and other native grapes long neglected.

Now truly a family operation, Pares Balta is devoted to the health of the soil, the health of the vines, the health of the wines in the bottle and the health of their expanding family and estate.

'Indigena' is made from a native Penedes garnacha varietal. Sourced from young vines planted at 615 meters at the Les Torres estate in the mountains of Pontons, the juice is fermented for 4 weeks at 20ºC in stainless steel tanks. The must is pumped over 3 times daily. Aging occurs in new and 2nd use French oak barrels.

Envínate (Wine Yourself) has turned into a unicorn winery, producing wines people talk and read about but never can find or buy. The gang of four friends behind these bottles met while studying enology in Alicante, Spain. After graduating, they formed a wine consulting business to find lost, old vineyards and indigenous grapes and started producing wines from these sites and grapes. Their aim is to create wine using no chemicals, handwork, and indigenous yeast only. The end product has been incredible and the sommelier world has latched onto their creations with fervor. The wines are incredibly high in demand with very little produced each year.

This cuvee is made from multiple different red varieties indigenous to the Canary Islands. Planted at 75-300 meters elevation right on the atlantic coast, the parcels these grapes are grown on are very old with 15 different families helping Envinate with harvest each year. Viticulturally the area is very old fashioned with vines untrained, soils worked by hand, and no chemical additions. 30% whole cluster fermentation takes place is open plastic tubs and concrete tanks and is then aged in small tanks and used 225 and 500 liter barrels for around 8 months.

Succes Vinicola, Conca de Barbera Trepat 'La Cuca de Llum' 2020

This winemaking tale happens in the small appellation of Conca de Barbera, located just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic Ocean in the region of Catalunya. A couple that was brought together by their love of wine. Initially the project was facilitated by “Viver de Celleristes,” a winemaking facility that allowed young entrepreneurs space to create their wines. They eventually moved to a more permanent winemaking residence in a garagiste winery. With them being so new to the Conco de Barbera appellation, other local growers assumed the couple did not know what they were doing as they were using organic methods. Mariona and Albert take part in all the work together. The wines are made in a natural manner, which is progressively becoming more and more of a focus in The New Spain.

Cuca de Llum means lightworm and refers to the winemakers who saw a lightworm one night when they went to the vineyards to sample fruit. The wine drinks like the reds of Alto Adige or Jura. The winemaking is a little quicker, as the juice only spends five months on the lees in steel before being released.

Cantalapiedra Viticultores, "Arenisca" Tinta de Toro 2017

In the region of Castilla y Leon of western Spain is Rueda. The grapes Verdejo and Tinto de Toro thrive here. In Rueda, there was a transition of conventional winemaking and then a slow progression (by a few) to make more expressive wines with lower intervention. The Cantalapiedras family dates back to the 19th century in the Rueda, with each generation bringing something new. There was a transition of conventional farming and selling fruit to finally bottling their own wines in 2014. There was another transition of making organic and biodynamic farming a priority. Manuel is the lead of the current generation, making wines both single vineyard and entry level.

This bottle is named “Arenisca” which means sandstone. It is made from Tinta de Toro, which is Rueda’s name for the Tempranillo grape. “Paraje Los Panaderos” is the name of the vineyard in Toro where this wine comes from. This site is among the highest elevation in the area. There is 30% stem inclusion for added structure and it spends 11 months in used French oak. While many Toro wines are very tannic, this bottle is balanced.

El Espectacle de Montsant, Montsant 2015

Variety: Grenache

This is a very special project of some of the biggest talent from Spain coming together in the region of Montsant. Those names are René and Isabelle Barbier of Clos Mogador, Fernando and Marta Zamora, and Charlotte and Christopher Cannan of Clos Figueras. Their project is straightforward; harvesting Grenache from an insanely steep two hectare vineyard with vines over 100 years old located in the commune of La Figuera. The team collaborates in the vineyards and in the cellar.

After careful tending, the Grenache is destemmed. The grapes ferment for 30 days in a single large French oak barrel, then will continue to age in the same vessel for another 14-16 months. This has depth and richness while maintaining fruit and spice.
