Steve Matthiasson is a California pioneer. Daring to break Napa tradition, Steve and his wife Jill have planted rare, ancient Italian grapes though recognize that Napa loves all the well-known international grapes. A Matthiasson tasting experience, laid out on the picnic table that separates their home from the winemaking operation (with their dog and at least one son stopping by!) shows instantly how the couple reveres the place they farm together. This is real California wine and Matthiasson’s wines are where California wine is headed. Steve Matthiasson is a six-time nominee for a James Beard award, a serious achievement in the wine industry. He has also been named “Winemaker of the Year” by both Food & Wine Magazine and The San Francisco Chronicle. Steve and Jill are long time friends and mentors to Hart & Cru.
This Rhone-inspired blend comes from two organic vineyards in Dunnigan Hills and Napa Valley. The fruit is grown exclusively for this rose and harvested early just as it would for a sparkling wine to retain all its glorious acidity. Everything about this wine is intentionally done in a fresh style which lends itself perfectly to all manner of spring vegetables and summer porch sipping.

Variety: Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault
The lure of Provence –the colors, the sights, the sounds, the smells, what’s not to love? Certainly Canadians Jane and Hugh Faulkner couldn’t find an answer to that,
purchasing and beginning restorations of Le Grand Cros in 1989. They were joined in 1999 by son Julian, who continued upgrades, this time focusing on the vineyards and winery. Their aim is to blend science and art, balancing the latest technologies with respect for the natural setting. From this thinking comes a lineup of rosés.
Flavors are abound in this fresh and herbal spirit of Provence. L’esprit means the “mind or wit” of Domaine Grand Cros. This bottle is a blend of mostly Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah.
Ermitage du Pic St. Loup, Rose 2021Regular price $23.00 Save $-23.00
Variety: Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Cinsault
Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup has quite the legend following it. In medieval times, there were three lords of the Languedoc entranced by the beauty of a princess. She vowed to give herself to the most gallant, Christian man. The lords traveled to Jerusalem on a crusade to defend the tomb of Christ; upon returning, they discovered the princess’ death. In their grief, they each retreated to nearby mountains, living their lives as hermits. “Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup” translates to a hermit dwelling; Saint Loup Peak was named for one of the princess’ suitors. The three Ravaille brothers now operate the winery, their family having lived in the Languedoc for over 1000 years. The emblem of three fish not only reiterates the story of the three suitors, but also the fraternal bond of the three brothers.
This is the classic trio of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre blended with Cinsault from vines 10-50 years in age. The rose is pressed directly bringing out the beautiful coral tones of the fruit. This can be drunk immediately, though would do very well to revisit after a year in the cellar.
