This is a newer project from the minds of Alain Graillot, his sons Antoine and Maxime, and Jacques Poulain of Domaine Ouled Thaleb. The domaine is situated on the coast of Morocco in the warm region of Zenata. It was Alain who had the idea to take his Northern Rhone style of Syrah and apply it to the gravelly terroir that he found while vacationing there. Everything in the vineyards is worked by hand and farmed organically, an extension of their practices used back home in France. This area is a bit under the radar as it is far removed from other sources that would pollute the vines, making Zenata ideal for organic farming.

This Syrah has French roots, though has the distinctive style of the Moroccocan coast where it’s warm during the day and cool winds sweep through at night. The fruit is all destemmed and aged in large older barrels. The wine is juicy and vibrant, though still has its Old World elegance.

Variety: Trousseau

Bénédicte et Stéphane Tissot are a powerhouse winemaking couple based out of Arbois in the Jura region. Their perspective plays vital to the style of their wine. They favor natural wines as opposed to industrial ones, and wines that show off nature’s gifts versus winemaking. Their wines have been certified biodynamic by Demeter. Many of Jura’s wines go for an oxidative style; their wines are not this. They prefer a reductive style, the opposite of the local style. Their love is shown by their passion and their drive to make several different wines.

Singulier is made exclusively from the Trousseau variety grown in five different parcels. These are some of the oldest estate vines dating back to the year 1930. The fruit is all destemmed to show the purity and freshness of the fruit. The wine ages in barrels for one month before its release. Think of a red fruited, juicy Pinot Noir with a slight orange peel influence you might get from Nebbiolo; that would be Trousseau.

Bonnet-Ponson, 'Griblanc' Coteaux Champenois 2020

Gregoire Bonnet began this estate in 1862. After six generations in this family, the longevity of this wine is going nowhere. The fruit has always been sourced from their own family vineyards strewn across five Premier Cru and Grand Cru villages in the region of Champagne with home base in the village of Chamery. Gregoire was one of the first recoltant manipulants of the village, indicating that he grew his own fruit and bottled it as well. While the family name may have history attached to it, they continue to improve as they now implement organic practices. The name of their domaine has also evolved as Bonnet was the original name, though a woman of the name Ponson, with wine in her blood, married into the Bonnet family.

While this wine is quality, it is by no means classic, nor ordinary. As the region of Champagne pivots its style in the wake of climate change, we see many other varieties being used, as well as a plethora of still wines. This still white utilizes all seven varieties allowed in Champagne. The wine is completely natural and slightly oxidative like the whites found in Jura.

Marilena Barbera is proprietor and winemaker at Cantine Barbera, a boutique winery located in Menfi, on the Southwest coast of Sicily. Her family has been grape producers for three generations. From her grandfather who planted the first indigenous vineyards in the early 1920’s to her father who walked in his parent’s footsteps and selected the grape varieties which would best adapt to the land’s micro-climatic conditions. Her commitment is to produce high quality wines only with the grapes grown and selected in their 30 hectares in Tenuta Belicello, only a few steps away from the Mediterranean Sea while continuing to carry on her father’s dream.

This oil comes from the Nocellara olives which are indigenous to the southwestern part of Sicily known as Valle del Belice. When the olives are used for eating, they are known as the more familiar Castelvetrano, which is named for the city of the same name. The olives, just like the vines, are certified organic.

Not only is she one of two female winemakers on the island of Mallorca, she is also just one of three natural winemakers in a place where winemaking is difficult. While many use the international varieties like Cabernet and Syrah to make their wines noticed by the world, Cati made a firm decision to use indignenous varieties that are lighter in style, reflecting the terroir of Mallorca. It shows just how focused Cati is as she not only is a single mother with a winery to run, additionally she flew back and forth from Barcelona to Mallorca daily while training as a somm. Her work ethic is unparalleled.

This is a blend of indigenous grapes from outside the family’s bodega. The fruit is aged both in amphora and stainless, as well as seeing a couple hours of skin contact. The wine is done completely naturally.

Chapel, Beaujolais Villages 2022

Despite the sound of the name, this newly founded domain is named for the last names of the couple, as opposed to… well, a chapel. Founded in the village of Regnie in Beaujolais, the couple has a few other hectares strewn between Fleurie and Chiroubles. The couple met while David Chapel was working for Mathieu Lapierre, famous winemaker of Domaine Lapierre. They still collaborate with Mathieu and Camille Lapierre on particular projects. Respecting the land is a priority as the couple uses only garden tools and a cable plough. Keep an eye on these two, as their great venture has only just begun.

This Beaujolais comes from the village of Lantignie, considered the best for Beaujolais Villages due to the high elevation. This village is behind a movement looking to make it the next Cru in the region. This wine is the perfect example of what might be served in a Lyonnais bouchon due to its versatility with local cuisine and low alcohol.

Envinate, Lousas Vinas de Aldea 2021

Envínate (Wine Yourself) has turned into a unicorn winery, producing wines people talk and read about but never can find or buy. The gang of four friends behind these bottles met while studying enology in Alicante, Spain. After graduating, they formed a wine consulting business to find lost, old vineyards and indigenous grapes and start producing wines from these sites and grapes. The aim has been no chemicals, handwork, and indigenous yeast only. The end product has been incredible and the sommelier world has latched on. Now the wines are in high demand but very little is produced.

Viñas de Aldea means “village wine,” differentiating this wine from Envinate’s single vineyard bottlings. The bottle is also named for the slate soil “Lousa” prevalent in Ribeira Sacra. The wine is made with whole cluster fermentation and aged in French oak barrels for eleven months. This Mencia is fresh and elegant oozing with peppery notes.

Famille Dutraive, Chenas Lieu-Dit "Les Perelles" 2020

With a father like the beloved and famous Jean-Louis Dutraive it does not hurt the eldest son in his quest to find his own voice amongst the vines and rolling hills of the sleepy appellation of Beaujolais. With the region gaining much attention from wine geeks worldwide due to the versatility of the wines (for dining or just flat out drinking), the camaraderie of the vignerons is unparalleled. There is a young, energetic group with easy access to top vineyard sites and everyone is cheering each other on.

After the devastating 2016 vintage, which was wiped out from hail storms, the producers remain affable and optimistic. This is how "Famille Dutraive" came about; it's a negociant project co-owned by Jean-Louis and his three children. The fruit is sourced and then vinified by the Dutraive family in their cellars.

"Les Perelles" is a lieu dit hailing from the village of Chénas sitting at an altitude of 250 meters. Paul-Henri and Charles Thillardon, owners of this site, are organic farming champions of Chénas. Jean-Louis Dutraive took the brothers under their wing after meeting them back in 2009. The mentality of helping each other out is clear as the brothers then helped the Dutraive family by selling them fruit after the terrible 2016 vintage.

Their inspired lineup includes classic reds and whites from the Loire made into vibrant, juicy styles ranging in price points. Their momentum only continues as they seek to better the world around them.

‘Les Bournais” was planted in just 2008 and it was predicted to be the greatest vineyard of Francois Chidaine. The soils are unlike any other in Montlouis with plenty of limestone and clay. Even with these young vines, the wine will do very well for years to come.

Francois and Manuéla are a husband and wife operation based in both Montlouis and Vouvray located in the central Loire Valley. In a region that produced bulk wine for years, particularly after WWII, the Chidaine duo brought an emphasis to wines of quality and regenerative farming; they also look to natural winemaking. One of their largest goals is to look to the future, “an effort to save the world.” Chidaine’s household wines are varying styles of Chenin Blanc from dry to off-dry to sparkling. Their inspired lineup includes classic reds and whites from the Loire made into vibrant, juicy styles ranging in price points. Their momentum only continues as they seek to better the world around them.

This is a very rare special bottle coming from the Chidaine lineup. Every so often, the vintage allows for a good harvest where the wines can be botrytised, otherwise known as a late harvest Vouvray wine. “Rive Gauche” means the left bank.

It is not enough to say that Isole e Olena is held to the highest regard and winemaker Paolo de Marchi has an unquestionable vision. Fourth generation winemaker Paolo De Marchi studied Agriculture at the University of Turin and worked harvests in California and France before returning to the family estate in 1976. He found much need for improvement and modernization in the Chianti Classico region. Paolo discovered a way to balance tradition with innovation by planting international varieties. Isole e Olena is named for the formation of the two estates that were purchased by the De Marchi family in the 1950s. He's earned a reputation as “Mr. Sangiovese” and also the “Dean of Chianti.” He sold the estate and completed his last vintage for Isole e Olena in 2022 after 50 years.

The “Gang of Four” is a nickname lovingly bestowed on the most noteworthy winemakers who make Cru Beaujolais. Kermit Lynch christened the name to Jean Foillard, Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton. The significance of this nickname lies far beyond their talents. Before natural wine made its resurgence in the area, Beaujolais Nouveau was the popular choice for years, hitting the tables of many Americans’ Thanksgiving tables every November. Enter Kermit Lynch—he began to import the crus made by the Gang in the 90s. Jean Foillard played a major role in returning Beaujolais to its roots by starting with old vines, eliminating synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting for the healthiest grapes, and using minimal doses of sulfur or none at all.

"Côte du Py" is the famed slope just outside the village of Morgon. Many call this vineyard the “pride of Morgon” as the granite and schist soils make for a standout complex wine.

Before World Wars I and II, excellent dry wine was made in the Rheinhessen, but with postwar economic recovery and mass market consumerism came the debacle of liebfraumilch. This was overly sweet swill exported for some time until the 1980s when several winemakers, led by Weingut Keller, decided they could do much better. The elegant dry Riesling once again made a renaissance and is here to stay for good. Klaus Peter Keller and his family are at the absolute top when it comes to dry riesling from the Rheinhessen in Germany. They create a line of single cru wines from many limestone laiden vineyards there. With each vintage, they express the unique voices of each terroir, whether it be the entry level or the grand cuvee.

If you were ever hoping for a story of an accidental winemaker, hang tight. Alberto Nanclares and his wife uprooted from their home in the Basque country to the ocean side village of Castrelo. The small home they purchased incidentally came with some vineyards. While Alberto initially had no plans to make wine, the thought of farming nagged at him, and so, a winemaker was born. He invested in winemaking tools, eventually setting up shop in his garage. Conventional farming then turned into organic and biodynamic, an impressive feat for a region prone to viticultural difficulties, even using seaweed from the nearby Atlantic for composting. Alberto is making incredible grower Albariño, as well as other local varieties at incredible value.

While Nanclares is known for their angular style Albarino, this is a lively red made from the local spicy Mencia and blended with other indigenous varieties. Alcohol is 11.5% and is aged like a red Burgundy almost in mostly used barrels.

Unlike other growers in the region, Alberto chooses not to add potassium to the wine in order to soften acidity, instead choosing to celebrate it.

Peter Lauer, Riesling "Senior" Fass 6 2021

Variety: Riesling

Peter Lauer is one of the best winemakers in all of Germany. The reality is his style is completely focused. He takes Riesling, one of the most misunderstood grape varieties on the market, and creates wines with serious expression. The wines are textural, focused, and fairly serious. Riesling, for many, is considered sweet, fruity, and playful even, but here it is in a style that finds itself in the same conversation as classified white Burgundy. No one else is making wine like this. So when we say seize the opportunity when his wines are available, do that.

This Riesling is simply flying under the radar. The bottle is designated as a village wine though all the fruit comes from the vineyard of Ayler Kupp. A hint: all of Lauer’s village level wines have a green circle on the label. The site has 70-year-old vines that are ungrafted, meaning they’d never been affected by phylloxera. It’s basically a Grand Cru wine in terms of its quality, but the value is astounding. “Senior” is this wine’s name, which refers not just to Peter Lauer’s father, but also the style as an old school throwback of the Saar wines.

Peter Lauer is one of the best winemakers in all of Germany. The reality is his style is completely focused. He takes Riesling, one of the most misunderstood grape varieties on the market, and creates wines with serious expression. The wines are textural, focused, and fairly serious. Riesling, for many, is considered sweet, fruity, and playful even, but here it is in a style that finds itself in the same conversation as classified white Burgundy. No one else is making wine like this. So when we say seize the opportunity when his wines are available, do that.

Unterstenberg is a grand cru of the Saar tributary in the Mosel, translating to “under the mountain.” Its placement at the bottom of the hill has absorbed all the minerals that have washed down for centuries, and rarely lacks water; a vineyard sponge if you will. This is one of the most powerful wines Peter makes and made into an almost off-dry style.

SRC is a small family operation that started in just 2013. Amazingly, the wines are low-production and have just recently become available here in Ohio. It is the force of husband and wife duo, Rori and Cinzia, as well as their daughter, Sandra. This is how SRC gets its name—an acronym of all their names. The project began as a small plot of land of just 0.5 hectares that Rori purchased as a surprise for Cinzia, one that went over rather well as the family continued acquiring land. The identity of Etna comes through in each of SRC’s wines where they showcase the ancient low-yielding vines, the volcanic soils, and the charming Mediterranean spirit. The family uses a careful hand in the cellar, allowing the fruit to shine—no sulfur and minimal oak ageing. We agree with many who say these wines are truly representative of their sense of place more so than any other place in the world.

“Alberello” is the name of this site boasting vines up to 100 years old that never saw phylloxera. The vines are home to softer volcanic ash on this part of the volcano allowing for a softer and intensely aromatic wine showcasing the real charm of Nerello Mascalese. The juice ages in concrete for twelve months, allowing the Albello’s purity to really shine.

This Bianco is made from the traditional Carricante with the addition of Grecanico (known as Garganega in northern Italy.) The vines are 50 to 70 years in age from black sandy soils on the north side of Etna. The winemaking is minimal, with the fruit undergoing 12 hours of maceration which is fairly common for these varieties. The lightly grippy tannin adds complexity while imparting texture and increasing its ageing potential.

Tenuta Di Carleone, Toscana 'Il Guercio' 2020

Variety: Sangiovese

Tenuta Carleone di Castiglioni was first mentioned in the year 1078 when monks first founded it in Chianti, named for the village of Castiglioni meaning “small castle.” The property is a romantic vision of wooded hills, rivers, and fertile plains. Nestled in between the hills are the Sangiovese vines and olive trees. Though the property was farmed for hundreds of years, it did not become the winery of Tenuta di Carleone until 2012. Karl Egger and Sean O’Callaghan both operate the winery with a clear vision, even though Sean is nicknamed “Il Guercio” (meaning one-eyed rascal.) They create Sangiovese in a classic way, though with Sean’s twist using organic and biodynamic practices. Nothing is added to the wine, grappa, or cold-pressed olive oils. Keep a look out for their other Sangiovese expressions, ‘Uno,’ Chianti Classico, and grappa.

This is Sangiovese from a single vineyard in the Chianti region without the Chianti designation. The grapes are harvested late due to the high elevation and the wine is aged in cement tanks. This is a standout wine for the region due to its winemaking and rigorous sustainability practices.
