Barbacan is a miniscule estate of just three hectares in the far north of Italy on the Swiss border. Here the Sega family is one of the few growers in the appellation of Valtellina in Lombardy that are making wine completely naturally. Coupled with what the Italians call “heroic viticulture,” the grueling work put forth by this father and his two sons is beyond impressive. Valtellina is a serious valley of terraced vineyards. Both human efforts and the grapes are stressed, and this shows in the beautiful wines of this unique Alpine area. Chiavennasca is the local name for the variety we know as Nebbiolo.

“Sol” means sun in Italian. As seen from the label, the sun plays a vital role in the life of the vine, as well as how the Chiavennasca vines are terraced at very high altitudes. The juice spends three months macerating on the skins, then ages in a mixture of acacia and chestnut barrels for one year. It then spends another nine months in concrete before it’s ready.

Alpi Retiche, or the Rhaetian Alps, are a smaller mountain range of the easter Alps while also distinguishing itself as a separate appellation from Valtellina. There are often a small blend of other grape varieties in the mix beyond Nebbiolo. This undergoes a shorter skin maceration than ‘Sol.’ It is aged in a mixture of Slavonian oak and steel tanks before release.

This is the first ‘Cru’ of Barbacan located in the Valgella zone of Valtellina. The vines are 90 years old and vinified separately from the others due to its distinctive terroir. The wine is a Valtellina Superiore, meaning it needs to be aged for a minimum two years, at least one of which is in barrel.

There are many regions in Italy that show the detrimental hand of western trends. Amarone is, and should be, one of the great wines of Italy. However, finding one that still tastes genuinely Italian can be tricky. Ca’La Bionda is located in the historic “classic” zone of the Valpolicella region. Founded in 1902, the family’s focus has always been on the grapes and the vineyard work. They presently cultivate 25 hectares. Alessandro Castellani is the current, fourth-generation winemaker. His wines are held in six-foot-tall oak casks until ready to drink. Certain wines are aged longer than others. But at every step of the way, attention is given to tradition, as opposed to modern, quick winemaking. Alessandro’s wines rarely receive much mainstream press, which is fine by him.

This is a more elegant version of Valpolicella, the classic blending of the usual grapes. The fruit comes from the “classic” zone of Valpolicella. Fermentation is done first in stainless, then in bottle for another three months before the wine is released.

The Ravazzol Amarone is a blend of 70% Corvina, 20% Corvinone and 10% Rondinella from 50-70 year old vines grown on the hillside vineyard of Ravazzol. Immediately after harvest in September and October, the bunches of grapes are placed on cane drying racks until January or February in order to dry out the grapes, concentrating flavors and helping to delivering the unique aromas and structure of Amarone.

Ca’ La Bionda opted against the fashionable choice of the ripasso method often seen in the Valpolicella zone. The Casalvegri vineyard is noted for its fantastic soil composition, elevation, and micro-climate; all the grapes used come from this site. This considered, there is no ripasso method used for the wine. After ageing in stainless, the wine ages for 18 months in 3000 liter barrels, and another six months in bottle before release.

Variety: Garganega and Trebbiano

There are many regions in Italy that show the detrimental hand of western trends. Amarone is, and should be, one of the great wines of Italy. However, finding one that still tastes genuinely Italian can be tricky. Ca’La Bionda is located in the historic “classic” zone of the Valpolicella region. Founded in 1902, the family’s focus has always been on the grapes and the vineyard work. They presently cultivate 25 hectares. Alessandro Castellani is the current, fourth-generation winemaker. His wines are held in six-foot-tall oak casks until ready to drink. Certain wines are aged longer than others. But at every step of the way, attention is given to tradition, as opposed to modern, quick winemaking. Alessandro’s wines rarely receive much mainstream press, which is fine by him.

Coming from just outside the Soave Classico appellation, this Bianco gets a similar treatment to the Soave style. The grapes come from the Ravazzol vineyard, boasting vines more than 70 years old with superb climate and soil type, making for an invigorating white wine.

Grape varieties are much like olives in the notion that they can thrive in similar growing conditions while still expressing a sense of place. Corzano e Paterno opt to bottle several of the olive oils as “monocultivars.” Frantoio is actually the name of the olive crushing machine. This is a high yielding olive that makes a very fruity oil.

Garganega is the principal grape variety in Soave, an area about less than an hour from Le Fraghe. The grape is indigenous to the area. This fresh, attractive white wine shows aromas and flavors of apple, almond, herbs, and a hint of white peach. The palate is notable for its full body, excellent progression, and overall harmony. This is a great everyday bottle of white wine. Camporengo Garganega is delicious with first courses of seasonal vegetables and fresh seafood.

Variety: Corvina and Rondinella

As a young girl, Matilde Poggi, grew up around winemaking and hearing her parents talk about it. During October, she would go straight from school to the vineyards to help with the harvest. Her first harvest was in 1984, prior to that, the grapes were sold to another winery. Matilde is passionate about the surrounding terroir of valleys, rivers, winds from the north, and the mountainous areas that makes her wines uniquely their own. Her 3 daughters now help her run the winery. They have been certified organic since 2009.

The Bardolino growing area is between the base of Lake Gardo and Valpolicella, not far from Verona in Northeast Italy. Matile Poggi’s Bardolino contains more Corvina than is normal, with only 20% of the wine being Rondinella. The estate is organic, and the two varieties are fermented separately and then blended, using no oak for aging, as the wine would be overwhelmed by wood. This is an extremely versatile wine, with a body not unlike Pinot Noir.

Even though the estate Monte Bernardi dates back to 1085 in the region of Panzano in Tuscany, Michael Schmelzer and family purchased the estate in 2003 and have been making beautiful Sangiovese-based wines and olive oil ever since. The property’s vineyards are situated in the hilly, southern-most region of Panzano, an area that has been acknowledged as one of the “Grand Crus” of Chianti Classico. Most of the vineyards are more than 40 years old. Before 1992, the grapes were sold to neighboring farms. The Schmelzer family, originally from Michigan, purchased Monte Bernardi in 2003. As winemaker, Michael has invested time, love and money in the vineyards, the winery and villa. The property was certified biodynamic in 2004.

“Gioventu” is a new addition to the Monte Bernardi wines. As the label shows, this wine is just as much about looking to the future as well as the past. Gioventu is all about being easy and fun, which is why it does not have a Chianti classification.

Retromarcia is more than the sum of its parts; its name is an ode to the classic elegance of the historic style of Chianti. This is fresh and fruity, though with well-balanced acidity and structure.

Even though the estate Monte Bernardi dates back to 1085 in the region of Panzano in Tuscany, Michael Schmelzer and family purchased the estate in 2003 and have been making beautiful Sangiovese-based wines and olive oil ever since. The property’s vineyards are situated in the hilly, southern-most region of Panzano, an area that has been acknowledged as one of the “Grand Crus” of Chianti Classico. Most of the vineyards are more than 40 years old. Before 1992, the grapes were sold to neighboring farms. The Schmelzer family, originally from Michigan, purchased Monte Bernardi in 2003. As winemaker, Michael has invested time, love and money in the vineyards, the winery and villa. The property was certified biodynamic in 2004.

Retromarcia is more than the sum of its parts; its name is an ode to the classic elegance of the historic style of Chianti. Sangiovese shines on its own in this wine coming from vines planted between 2003 and 2010 from estate fruit in Panzano. Ageing is completed over 18 months in large casks. This is fresh and fruity, though with well-balanced acidity and structure.

Sa’etta is an estate vineyard located in Panzano from which only the best grapes are selected for this Riserva. This purely Sangiovese is naturally fermented in large oak casks, then goes on to age in Austrian and German oak for 24 months, then finishes ageing in the bottle for one more year before release. This is everything we desire in well-made Chianti: pure fruit character, acidity, a mineral backbone, finessed tannins.
