G.D. Vajra, N.S. Della Neve, Extra Brut, Metodo Classico Rosato NV
Regular price $38.00 Save $-38.00Variety: Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir
The G.D. Vajra winery was created in 1972 by Aldo and Milena Vaira, initially from vineyards planted by Aldo’s father in 1947. The winery was named for Aldo’s father, Giuseppe Domenico Vajra, because at the time Aldo was not old enough to establish the winery in his own name. Today the family has 40 hectares under vine in Barolo and other surrounding appellations. Their prized holdings in Bricco delle Viole were planted in 1949 by Aldo’s grandfather. Milena and Aldo’s three children – Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro – are all involved in the family winery operation situated in the village of Vergne. The family is hard-working, passionate, and caring. Their focus is on building something for their children, caring about the community, and cementing the stories of the regions’ past. The family is longtime friends of Hart & Cru. They continue to uphold their passion for quality wine and the people who surround them.
The story behind the wine began with Thomas Jefferson when he was French ambassador and often traveled to Piedmont. During his visits, he drank Nebbiolo and proclaimed that it was as brisk as Champagne. The Vajra family later challenged this statement by making a wine with both Nebbiolo and the Champagne grape, Pinot Noir, as its blend. This bottle gets its name from the chapel that sits on the slopes of the vineyards: “Nostra Signora Della Neve” which means "Our Lady of the Snow" referring to the barren soil which still produces beautiful fruit from this site.

Fratelli Alessandria, Verduno Pelaverga Speziale 2022
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00Variety: Pelaverga
Fratelli Alessandria is one of the stars of Verduno. The Alessandria family – owner Gian Battista, his wife Flavia, brother Alessandro, and son Vittore – lovingly produce a robust range of Piedmont specialty wines from start to finish. The farmer of the group, Gian’s philosophy is “the best wine comes from a great vineyard.” Located in the town of Verduno, in the commune of Barolo, the property has operated as a winery since the early 19th century. The wines were winning prizes as early as 1843. The original Alessandria brothers (fratelli) purchased the property in 1870. There is a deep understanding of how to work the vines in the marl soils they call “Sant’Agata,” a mixture of silt, limestone and sand. The Alessandria family first released their wine in 1978. Their style has always been classic, along with the grapes of the region; they never shifted towards a modernist hand.
Pelaverga is a rare grape difficult to find outside of its home of Verduno, but a welcome alternative to what we know as Barolo. Many Barolo producers grow this playful and herbaceous red.

Picollo Ernesto, Le Rive Gavi di Gavi 2022
Regular price $19.00 Save $-19.00Variety: Cortese
Gavi is the name of a small village in the Piedmont region. Often overshadowed by the Nebbiolo grape, Gavi really holds its own as the white wine favorite in the region. Coming from a village perched in the rolling hills of the Italian Alps, the climate here is uniquely Alpine like the north, but also Mediterranean where it soaks up sunshine and maritime breezes from the Ligurian Sea. When the northerly Piedmont folk go to Cinque Terre coast, they are sure to pick up some of this "beach wine" on their way to soak up the sun.
Outside of the village of Gavi, the Ernesto family farms 17 acres of exclusively Cortese, the variety used to make Gavi. They are now a third generation winery having been farming there since 1945. The Cortese grapes are all hand-harvested without usage of herbicides. All fermentation and ageing is done in stainless steel to keep the wines fresh and lively. It's a simple, clever wine that makes sense for many situations. This Gavi di Gavi comes from within the village of Gavi while the regular Gavi grows within the appellation.

Fratelli Alessandria, Langhe Favorita 2022
Regular price $23.00 Save $-23.00Variety: Favorita
Favorita is a distinct grape variety—as it’s known in Piedmont. But scientists say it is genetically identical to Vermentino—as it’s known in Sardinia. This a wine that will deliver freshness, minerality, and a whiff of floral.

Ettore Germano, Barolo Serralunga 2019
Regular price $65.00 Save $-65.00Variety : Nebbiolo
Based in serralunga the south-eastern most corner of the Barolo appellation, Ettore Germano's son Sergio has taken over the family estate in recent years. After completing six years of study at the School of Enology in Alba, he made wine for a few years at Fontanafredda, one of the larger wineries in the area, before returning to run the family estate in 1993. The winery still carries Ettore's name, despite the fact that his wines never reached the public market. Making primarily wine for his family with a few private customers here and here, Ettore was known throughout the area for his skill in grafting vines. Sergio, following his father's hands on approach, does much of the fieldwork himself, with the help of his wife Elena and a small crew.
This nebbbiolo is made from hand-picked fruit from young vines. The winery is certified organic and uses only native yeast in the fermentation process. Only 875 are cases produced annually.
