In the Rheingau area, Jean Baptiste Becker founded “J.B. Becker” in 1893. The second generation, led by Hans-Joseph Becker, was far ahead of his time, preemptively foreseeing the dry wine movement in the Rheingau area long before anyone else was doing it. Now onto the third generation, Hajo Becker is now owner and winemaker, continuing his father and grandfather’s legacy. After tasting with cellar master Hermann Neuser’s dry wines back in the 1970s, Hajo became instantly enamored with them. This was during a time when Germany was still known internationally for its Liebfraumilch, and other sweet swill. With his first vintage in 1971, he began focusing on dry Rieslings, which lost him many of his customers. All levels of vineyard care are at the forefront of importance to Becker, but he won’t talk about it; he thinks and he works.

Emrich-Schonleber, Riesling Halenberg GG 2021

Founder Stephen Bitterolf of Vom Boden once consumed a glass of 2004 Emrich-Schonleber Riesling GG which he felt may have inspired the beginning of his business. If that doesn’t convey the influence of these wines, there are other ways. They land in the same realm as Donnhoff and the Keller wines while remaining distinctly their own. The Schonleber wines are firm in their philosophy: “the wines offer true drinking pleasure, they’re honest, authentic, and unembellished, and lastly, a goal to produce wine with distinctive personalities.” The family forms a common core of thoughtfulness around the quality of the wine as each member participates in their own way. They aim to exceed the high expectations of their wines with each vintage while maintaining precision in the vineyard.

Halenberg is known as the most dense, serious, and mineral-forward of all the Grand Crus. This is Riesling that is fairly serious. It deserves a good decanting and would do well open 1 or 2 days before enjoying, and could use a few years before opening. That being said, it's a wine for savoring and for pleasure.

Lardot, Riesling 'der Graf' 2020

Philip Lardot was bit by the wine bug back in 2013. After harvests in the Loire in France, and later in the Mosel in Germany, he knew that Riesling was his true love. When he met Ulli Stein of the famous Mosel maestro with whom he worked for almost five years. While they are strong friends, there was a moment where Lardot almost took over Stein’s estate. That moment has passed and Lardot continues his exploration of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. All of his wines are done naturally and bring an ethereal texture to the table unlike any other Mosel wines. He also brings a bit of humor when naming his wines, as the Mosel panel tasting wouldn’t allow his natural wines to be classified, he still finds a way to convey their true status.

This is quite simply a wine you need to try. Many of Lardot’s wines are single vineyard; this one is hailing from the hill of Grafenberg, aka “the hill of the count,” which Lardon has summed up with a drawing of a Count on this label. In Germany, one can’t cite a single vineyard on labels of wines that are cloudy, but Lardot still sort of did!

Before World Wars I and II, excellent dry wine was made in the Rheinhessen, but with postwar economic recovery and mass market consumerism came the debacle of liebfraumilch. This was overly sweet swill exported for some time until the 1980s when several winemakers, led by Weingut Keller, decided they could do much better. The elegant dry Riesling once again made a renaissance and is here to stay for good. Klaus Peter Keller and his family are at the absolute top when it comes to dry riesling from the Rheinhessen in Germany. They create a line of single cru wines from many limestone laiden vineyards there. With each vintage, they express the unique voices of each terroir, whether it be the entry level or the grand cuvee.

Peter Lauer, Riesling Grand Cru ‘Unterstenberg’ 2021

Peter Lauer is one of the best winemakers in all of Germany. The reality is his style is completely focused. He takes Riesling, one of the most misunderstood grape varieties on the market, and creates wines with serious expression. The wines are textural, focused, and fairly serious. Riesling, for many, is considered sweet, fruity, and playful even, but here it is in a style that finds itself in the same conversation as classified white Burgundy. No one else is making wine like this. So when we say seize the opportunity when his wines are available, do that.

Unterstenberg is a grand cru of the Saar tributary in the Mosel, translating to “under the mountain.” Its placement at the bottom of the hill has absorbed all the minerals that have washed down for centuries, and rarely lacks water; a vineyard sponge if you will. This is one of the most powerful wines Peter makes and made into an almost off-dry style.

Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler are the names behind the husband-wife duo of Weiser-Kunstler. Their passion project began in just 2005. Even though the winery is still in early stages, the project has completely taken off. The couple balances their duties—Konstantin works in the cellar while Alexandra manages the affairs of the estates. They share their love for the vineyard work together, though for them it seems like their life’s joy. They utilize all old vines, un-grafted, with low-yielding fruit. The flora and fauna throughout the vineyards is encouraged to flourish. Their vineyards include some of the steepest and dangerous slate sites. The wines, which often retain a natural residual sugar, are always in balance, singing the praises of the Mosel vines from which they hail.

Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler are the names behind the husband-wife duo of Weiser-Kunstler. Their passion project began in just 2005. Even though the winery is still in early stages, the project has completely taken off. The couple balances their duties—Konstantin works in the cellar while Alexandra manages the affairs of the estates. They share their love for the vineyard work together, though for them it seems like their life’s joy. They utilize all old vines, un-grafted, with low-yielding fruit. The flora and fauna throughout the vineyards is encouraged to flourish. Their vineyards include some of the steepest and dangerous slate sites. The wines, which often retain a natural residual sugar, are always in balance, singing the praises of the Mosel vines from which they hail.

Founder Stephen Bitterolf of Vom Boden once consumed a glass of 2004 Emrich-Schonleber Riesling GG which he felt may have inspired the beginning of his business. If that doesn’t convey the influence of these wines, there are other ways. They land in the same realm as Donnhoff and the Keller wines while remaining distinctly their own. The Schonleber wines are firm in their philosophy: “the wines offer true drinking pleasure, they’re honest, authentic, and unembellished, and lastly, a goal to produce wine with distinctive personalities.” The family forms a common core of thoughtfulness around the quality of the wine as each member participates in their own way. They aim to exceed the high expectations of their wines with each vintage while maintaining precision in the vineyard.
