Famille Dutraive, Saint Amour "Clos du Chapitre" 2019
Regular price $45.00 Save $-45.00Variety: Gamay
With a father like the beloved and famous Jean-Louis Dutraive it does not hurt the eldest son in his quest to find his own voice amongst the vines and rolling hills of the sleepy appellation of Beaujolais. With the region gaining much attention from wine geeks worldwide due to the versatility of the wines (for dining or just flat out drinking), the camaraderie of the vignerons is unparalleled. There is a young, energetic group with easy access to top vineyard sites and everyone is cheering each other on. Even after the devastating 2016 vintage, which was wiped out from hail storms, the producers remain affable and optimistic. In fact, that is how "Famille Dutraive" came about; it's a negociant project co-owned by Jean-Louis and his three children. The fruit is sourced and then vinified by the Dutraive family in their cellars. Even after the awful vintage, it seems the family continues to enjoy sourcing from other villages for their fruit.
"Clos du Chapitre," meaning the end of the chapter, is a plateau at 260 meters in altitude at the edge of St. Amour. These are 50 year old vines planted in very rocky ancient soils.

Dupeuble, Beaujolais 2019
Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00Variety: Gamay
In the States, we talk about “The Deep South” and we are referencing the southern culture down by the gulf. The personalities coming from this part of the Country is unlike anything else. The hospitality is over the top yet sometimes slightly back country. This is very much the same for the regions where Dupeuble is from; this is the deep south of Beaujolais. Recently many of the Cru’s (towns) have become quite famous, but this part of the region is true farm country and has been for a long time. The Dupeuble Domaine dates back to 1512 and has produced wines with very little change in their methods.
The Dupeuble Beaujolais comes from vines ranging from 50-100 years old from clay, granite, and limestone soils. The juice ferments naturally via carbonic maceration and then ages in stainless steel. This bottle is an incredible value for what it represents; natural winemaking, old vines, and a traditional legendary winemaker to boot.

Marcel Lapierre, Morgon 2019
Regular price $45.00 Save $-45.00Variety: Gamay
Marcel Lapierre is a name that will live on as a legend in the region of Beaujolais. After taking over his father’s domain, life changed for Marcel when he met Jules Chavet, who has been deemed his spiritual godfather. Jules represented many things to Marcel in the winemaking world, but most notably, it was he who had spoken about natural wine during the 1950s when chemical fertilizers and pesticides began to appear. He wanted to keep the traditional ways of Beaujolais intact. Marcel Lapierre became the torch carrier of this return to natural winemaking, and additionally, the “Gang of Four”—a nickname given by Kermit Lynch to Marcel and local vignerons who carried out this mission. This return to old ways meant harvesting later, starting with old vines that naturally yield lower, and minimal doses of sulphur dioxide or none at all. Marcel Lapierre unfortunately passed in 2010; his son Mathieu carries on the legacy of his father.
This Morgon is a Cru Beaujolais coming from 60 year old vines. The vines are naturally low yields and done in the old whole cluster fermentation method in old barrels. It is a wine of cult status that is snatched up upon release.

Benoit Daridan, Cheverny Rouge 2018
Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00Variety: Pinot Noir and Gamay
Benoit Daridan took over the family winery in 2001 after many years of study and work experience around the world. As the seventh generation to take over the small 15 hectare farm, Benoit has worked tirelessly to protect and promote the family traditions of passion for the region's terroir. The vineyard is perfectly positioned between arguably the Loire Valley's two most famous properties: Château de Cheverny and Chateau de Chambord. While most of the vineyard is made up of young vines, they do pride themselves on a tiny two hectare plot of 50 year old vines. The appellation of Cheverny is almost unheard of, so we seize the chance to offer wines from lesser known areas that still deliver exceptional quality.
You would think this wine was from the region of Burgundy based on its blend and style, but it is a fresher, possibly softer version coming from similar soil types in the ancient Loire Valley. It is mostly Pinot Noir with a little Gamay added; a Loire version of the Burgundy Passetoutgrain.

The Dupeuble Domaine dates back to 1512 and has produced wines with very little change in their methods.
The Dupeuble Beaujolais comes from vines ranging from 50 to 100 year old vines from clay, granite, and limestone soils. The juice ferments naturally via carbonic maceration for just 5 days versus its traditional Dupeuble Rouge counterpart that ferments for 8-12 days. This Nouveau ages in stainless steel to keep it fresh and juicy. Drink it immediately and enjoy it chilled as the French do!
Beaujolais Nouveau Day, historically, is the release of the first wine of the harvest, but also a celebration of the end of harvest. The grapes are harvested just weeks prior. There over 100 Nouveau festivals all over Beaujolais that go with the region's excellent food. Although the Nouveau style has given Beaujolais a reputation of plonk-like, bubblegum-ey, fruity-tooty tasting wine, that is clearly not always the case.

Georges Lignier et Fils, Bourgogne Passetoutgrain 2018
Regular price $24.00 Save $-24.00Variety: Pinot Noir and Gamay
Neal Rosenthal wine merchant has had the Lignier name under his portfolio wing for over thirty years, by way of Hubert Lignier, Georges’ cousin. Georges and Hubert both have vineyards in the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation, though this is where their similarities begin and end. Hubert chooses a bold and structured style for his Burgundy while Georges goes for delicate and seductive. The domain is now led by Georges’ nephew, Benoit, who worked under his uncle for an entire decade before gaining control of the vines or cellar in 2008. Benoit’s approach is very much traditional; he aims for aromatic concentration over color or structure. His usage of barrel aging is a timeless example of Burgundy tradition; older barrels are used for the Villages level wines while some new oak is used for the crus. The domain has seriously substantial plots throughout Burgundy with the average age of the vines about fifty years old.

Nicolas Gonin, Rose 2018
Regular price $20.00 Save $-20.00Variety: Mondeuse, Pinot Noir, Gamay
Isère is a lesser-known area of the Savoie region of France, yields. south of Jura and west of the Alps. Before phylloxera ravaged France in the late 1880s, Isère boasted a whopping amount of vines. The region was then planted with hybrids, and due to lack of organization to form an AOC in WWII, viticulture practically disappeared. In enters Nicolas Gonin; after having worked for Domaine Tempier in Bandol, he found himself researching ampelography during his enological studies. Curiosity led to Nicolas spending time between both his Domaine and nursery where he traces the lineage of ancient grapes while trying to bring back the lost varieties of his region.

Jean-Paul Thevenet, Morgon Vieilles Vignes 2018
Regular price $37.00 Save $-37.00Variety: Gamay
The “Gang of Four” is a nickname lovingly bestowed on the most noteworthy winemakers who make Cru Beaujolais. Kermit Lynch christened the name to Jean Foillard, Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton. The significance of this nickname lies far beyond their talents. Before natural wine made its resurgence in the area, Beaujolais Nouveau was the popular choice for years, hitting the tables of many Americans’ Thanksgiving tables every November. Enter Kermit Lynch—he began to import the crus made by the Gang in the 90s. Jean-Paul Thevenet played a major role in returning Beaujolais to its roots by starting with old vines, eliminating synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting for the healthiest grapes, and minimal doses of sulfur or none at all.
The “Morgon Vieilles Vignes” is made from vines 70 years in age with naturally low yields. The techniques are classic to the style of the Gang of Four, natural and expressive.

Mee Godard, Morgon Corcelette 2017
Regular price $35.00 Save $-35.00Variety: Gamay
Before Mee Godard moved to France, she studied wine in Oregon, then moved her way to enology school in Montpellier. Her love for the Beaujolais area grew after working for several Burgundy based wineries. Beaujolais is one of the few places in France where an aspiring winemaker can start up their own winery. Mee is a one-person show that prunes, farms, and runs a strict cellar. She is part of a new wave of talented individuals that are actively paving a path for the future generation of winemakers by setting new trends. Everything is done by hand in the vineyard and yields are kept low. She is slowly converting the agriculture to biodynamic methods, though already practices organic. Her style involves using both carbonic and non-carbonic maceration for deeply structured wine. Keep an eye out for her Morgon wines of Beaujolais because she continues to deliver.
Corcelette has a reputation as a famous vineyard in the northerly area of Morgon. The average age of the vines is 70 years; they're densely planted and low yielding. This is a wine that can function as the picnic wine and still grace fine dining tables. It pairs beautifully with food, but doesn't need it. This is her most approachably priced bottle.

Marcel Lapierre, Morgon Cuvee Marcel Lapierre 2018
Regular price $75.00 Save $-75.00Variety: Gamay
The vines for this special bottle are 100 years old, taking the idea of old vines several steps further. It is a more serious, intense, and complex version of the traditional Morgon. This will need time in the bottle or time in the decanter, or perhaps both.

Famille Dutraive, Chiroubles 2019
Regular price $38.00 Save $-38.00Variety: Gamay
This is a lively blend from two separate old vine sites in the cru of Chiroubles. Poullet is the first vineyard with a hillside at almost 400 meters in altitude and vines aged 70 years. The other vineyard site is Javernaud located at over 400 meters with vines aged about 60 years. This is a bright, fresh, and quaffable wine from Chiroubles.

Jolie Laide, Gamay Noir El Dorado 2019
Regular price $33.00 Save $-33.00Variety: Gamay Noir
Scott Schultz, the brainchild behind Jolie Lade wines, had made the journey all over the wine world before starting Jolie Lade. With stints as wine director for Thomas Keller’s Bouchon, and former assistant winemaker for Pax Wines, this formulated the plan for his future winemaking endeavors. Jolie Lade is a loose term for Pretty-Ugly, a French term that lends itself well to the unconventionally beautiful styles of Scott Schultz. He takes classic French varieties, many of them uncommon in the states, and raises them to be beautiful wines. Scott is a one-man operation (of both hands and feet) and does it well.
This Gamay is from the mountainous area of the Sierra Foothills from the Barsotti Vineyard. The grapes are picked twice, one early and one later harvest. The wine takes on the traditions of Beaujolais; carbonic and whole cluster fermentation is used for aromatics and fruitiness. The grapes are crushed by foot, reiterating the Old World feeling in these French-inspired wines. This wine ages in used barriques for six months and bottled right away for instant drinkability.

Jean Foillard, Morgon Cote du Py 2018
Regular price $45.00 Save $-45.00Variety: Gamay
Jean Foillard played a major role in returning Beaujolais to its roots by starting with old vines, eliminating synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting for the healthiest grapes, and using minimal doses of sulfur or none at all.
"Côte du Py" is the famed slope just outside the village of Morgon. Many call this vineyard the “pride of Morgon” as the granite and schist soils make for a standout complex wine.

Jolie Laide, Trousseau Poulsard Gamay Valdiguie 2019
Regular price $33.00 Save $-33.00Variety: Trousseau, Poulsard, Gamay, and Valdiguie
This wine is inspired by the reds of the French Alps. The grape varieties are traditional for the Savoie and Jura areas. They’re aromatic, red fruit-driven, herbal and peppery with grip. Even though this bottle is of a general northern California appellation, but the style is very un-California. As are traditional styles to the French Alpine areas, carbonic maceration is used for freshness and fruit; whole cluster is used for added grip and spice aromas.

Didier Meuzard, Ratafia de Bourgogne
Regular price $60.00 Save $-60.00Variety: Pinot Noir and Gamay
bottle size: 750ml
It’s stories like these that we love to learn and share. Didier Meuzard grew up in Burgundy; at a young age he was already climbing the corporate ladder far from home. After the feeling of burning out got to him, he consulted his doctor and was hastily told to make a quick career change. The change happened when he was walking through the square in his hometown where he came across an old man loading a still will the grape must from the harvest for use in distilled spirits. After questions and tasting, Didier soon was enamored with the entire process; the old man invited him to work the still job over the next couple days. It so happened that Didier had his career change using the old man’s 19th century still allowing the old man to retire. Didier took all the knowledge he could from the man, ultimately transitioning his uncle’s old farmhouse into a home base for distilling and ageing his ratafia.
Didier set out to reimagine the idea of ratafia from start to finish, starting with grape pomace and must from natural growers only. His decision was to make a red ratafia, not the white expression, which is custom for Burgundy. He took it a step further by making his ratafia gentler and more elegant, instead of the typical harsh expression. For his version, he vinifies Pinot Noir and Gamay like he is making red wine. Before fermentation begins and without the addition of sulfur, tanks are placed outside to extend the maceration process while simultaneously keeping yeasts from activating. When the first sign of fermenting begins, he presses the grapes, and adds his own eau de vie; two thirds grape must, one third spirit. The spirit kills the yeast while keeping the integrity of the natural fruitiness of the juice. The mixture goes into enameled tanks for several months followed by hand-bottling. Wonderful for dessert or on its own, and as Didier suggests, slightly cold. It will stay good for several months after opening.
The eel on the label is an ode to the maker’s mark on the old man’s still that Didier inherited—you know, the one dating back to 1860.

Mee Godard, Morgon Cote du Py 2017
Regular price $40.00 Save $-40.00Variety: Gamay
The Cote du Py is a famous vineyard in the village of Morgon, known for its "rotten rock" schist soils. Wines from this vineyard are among the most intense and structured in this village. Mee's Cote du Py utilizes fruit from this vineyard the two surrounding "Morgon" and "Chaponne" vineyards. The average age of the vines is 70 years old.

"Les Michelons" is a vineyard that's just over a hectare in the cru of Moulin-à-Vent. This is Mee Godard's only current vineyard holdings outside of Morgon. Yields from the vines are extremely low, but deliver dense and complex wines. They undergo a maceration in concrete tanks and then age in a mix of oak that is both old and new, large and small for 12 to 18 months depending on the vintage. Until 2017, she actually managed the vineyard by herself, but now has part-time help.

Jean-Louis Dutraive, Domaine de la Grand'Cour, Fleurie Chapelle des Bois 2019
Regular price $40.00 Save $-40.00Variety: Gamay
There’s a relatively newfound love for Cru Beaujolais among the sommelier set and Domaine de la Grand’Cour is one of the rock star producers to make its way into the American market. Winemaker Jean-Louis Dutraive is a 5th generation vigneron focusing on small parcels of Gamay grown with integrity and produced with minimal intervention. All the wines undergo carbonic maceration for the fermentation and a mixture of different size barrels and cement casks are used for the elevage. Finished wines are unrefined and unfiltered before bottling. At nearly 60 years old, Jean-Louis Dutraive has long held the respect of local farmers from his region but has recently turned into a rather dark horse favorite among global wine geeks. His motto in the cellar is "minimal and maximum surveillance."
"Chapelle des Bois" is a vineyard located across the dirt road from the winery in Fleurie. The vines here are 20-70 years in age. This is an organically farmed vineyard where grapes are hand-harvested. This is the vin de soif of the domaine's lineup, aka the "thirst wine."
