Julian and Maia Ulacia’s small winery near the small fishing village of Getaria makes a mere 6000 cases of wine annually. Getaria is part of the Basque region, home to one of the most exciting wine and food scenes in all of Spain. It is located a stone’s throw away from the coast and the French border. The wines here go perfectly with the local seafood. Even though much of Spain is known for its warmer climate wines, the Basque region is definitively cooler. The presentation of Ulacia’s Txacoli wine is an art here; the bartenders do what’s called the “high pour,” an effort to give these light zippy wines an added effervescent and foamy mouthfeel.

This is Ulacia’s signature wine; bottled with a carbonic zing. This is raised in steel and undergoes just a three month ageing period before its release.

Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup has quite the legend following it. In medieval times, there were three lords of the Languedoc entranced by the beauty of a princess. She vowed to give herself to the most gallant, Christian man. The lords traveled to Jerusalem on a crusade to defend the tomb of Christ; upon returning, they discovered the princess’ death. In their grief, they each retreated to nearby mountains, living their lives as hermits. “Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup” translates to a hermit dwelling; Saint Loup Peak was named for one of the princess’ suitors. The three Ravaille brothers now operate the winery, their family having lived in the Languedoc for over 1000 years. The emblem of three fish not only reiterates the story of the three suitors, but also the fraternal bond of the three brothers.

The name of the bottling, “Tour de Pierres” means “tower of stones.” Perhaps the tower refers to the natural assemblage of limestone, and loose red clay stones at the bottom of the Gravette slope in Pic Saint Loup.

The family behind Alta Alella has spent their entire life dedicated to wine; that would be husband and wife Josef and Cristina along and their two daughters. They have always been surrounded by vineyards and bottles; so it is only natural! There is a complete commitment to nature, yet desire to keep with trends. Though the winery is young, the family continually push themselves to learn new things with each vintage. The wines have very low intervention-no added sulfites and little is done to the wines after their grapes have been pressed.

This uses only the Pansa Blanca variety, otherwise known as Xarello. Cava typically is a blended wine, but this Cava goes against many norms. It is made in the traditional method without any added sugar OR sulfites. This is terroir at its best as the sandy granitic soil really gets to shine here.

Railsback Freres, Roman Ceremony Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

The story of two brothers: even while still in high school, Eric was already collecting bottles of prized top dollar Burgundy and Chablis, hiding them under his bed when he started college. Lyle’s quest for knowledge landed him in Austria where he met one of his most important friends in the industry, sommelier Rajat Parr. After a decade of restaurant work, Eric returned to Santa Barbara to start his own project, Lieu Dit, inspired by the Loire. Older brother Lyle had also worn many hats in the industry, ultimately landing a job for one of the most esteemed importers Kermit Lynch, leading regional sales. After leading separate lives for some time, the brothers both felt a calling to merge their two paths, which is how Railsback Frères came to be born.

Roman Ceremony is a recent project from Railsback that began as a small project for a Michelin starred restaurant, though with its success grew to 1000 case production. Fruit comes from two vineyards suited to Bordeaux varieties with its gravelly loam and clay. The fruit was harvested early, yielding a more elegant style Cabernet. Though this bottle doesn’t reinstate the Provencal style of the other Railsback bottles, it earned a separate name inspired by the birthplace of wine.

There’s no beating around the bush with the intention of this rosé. It’s inspired by the famed Provence Rosé made by Lulu Peyraud of Domaine Tempier. With her passing at the age of 102 in 2020, this style of rosé will continue to stand the test of time. “Les Rascasses” means scorpion fish and is an homage to the fish that Lulu would include in her provincial Bouillabaisse fish stew.

Andrea Felici started bottling his wines in 2002, but when his son Leonardo wanted to join the family firm, Andrea wisely sent him to get experience in the wider world, to develop a taste for fine wine, to broaden his perspectives before he came back to their tiny village in the region of the Marche. Leo spent four years working as a sommelier, then returned home. He and his father began converting the vineyards to organic. They make just two wines: a young vine Verdicchio, and a lees-aged Verdicchio from 50 year old vines. Both are delicious at incredible value.

Borgo Paglianetto Verdicchio Spumante 2015

Borgo Paglianetto is a relatively new winery born in 2008. In the central area of the Marche region are the vineyards that span the valley between Fabriano and Camerino. The wines come from the production area of Verdicchio di Matelica. This region is a short distance from the Adriatic Sea and dredged in the history of its vine growing. The closed-off Alta Valle dell ‘Esino within Matelica is unique in that it boasts north-south facing vineyards, in turn creating a unique microclimate for these vines. Borgo has a clear mantra of using the historic land to express terroir through quality and passion.

With a 2017 vintage, this traditional method Spumante uses Verdicchio from the best of the Borgo vineyard sites. The wines ages for 40 months on its lees. Due to its unique microclimate, quality, and ageing process, this wine easily gives Champagne a run for its money.

The Mirgin Cava is made in the traditional method using all three classic varieties used to make Cava. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats, and the wine ages for 30 months on its fine lees before it is disgorged and bottled. This is a Brut Nature, which simply means there is no added sugar to this wine.

“PB” means Pansa Blanca, otherwise known as Xarello, one of the traditional grapes used for Cava. Pansa Blanca is a blank canvas for its Mediterranean microclimate, taking in a salty almond characteristic reminiscent of its coastal influence. Ulacia, Txakoli de Getaria Rose 2022

Variety: Hondarrabi Beltza and Hondarrabi Zuri

Julian and Maia Ulacia’s small winery near the small fishing village of Getaria makes a mere 6000 cases of wine annually. Getaria is part of the Basque region, home to one of the most exciting wine and food scenes in all of Spain It is located a stone’s throw away from the coast and the French border. The wines here go perfectly with the local seafood. Even though much of Spain is known for its warmer climate wines, the Basque region is definitively cooler. The presentation of Ulacia’s Txacoli wine is an art here; the bartenders do what’s called the “high pour,” an effort to give these light zippy wines an added effervescent and foamy mouthfeel.

The Hondarrabi Beltza grapes come from 40 to 50 year old vines. Since this is a rose completed by blending both white and red grapes together, the grapes go through unique treatments. The reds undergo a three hour maceration while the white juice is added later to ferment together. It’s bottled just three months after harvest. Hondarrabi Beltza is said to be descended from Cabernet Franc; you can taste the distinctive green pepper notes in this so often associated with that variety.

If you take some doctors, whose family has some old land holdings, and let them be farmers you end up with some pretty amazing juice. They care about all the health benefits of wine and they cut out all the things that are bad for you. They just make wine from grapes, pretty simple. They may be called “natural” but these are truly wines we crave and love. Jean is the village doctor and he and his wife have family ties in the wine world dating back to the 16th century. The family farms with organic, intuitive practices to preserve the life of the soils and the entire property works as an eco-system. There are some incredibly old vines on site, over 115 years old, and it is pretty special to have access to this age of rootstock.

This is Chateau La Baronne’s “little cuvee!” After fine tuning the blend of Carignan and Grenache for years, this blend speaks to the voice of Corbieres and the talent of the winemakers.

Ermitage du Pic St. Loup, Rose 2021

Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup has quite the legend following it. In medieval times, there were three lords of the Languedoc entranced by the beauty of a princess. She vowed to give herself to the most gallant, Christian man. The lords traveled to Jerusalem on a crusade to defend the tomb of Christ; upon returning, they discovered the princess’ death. In their grief, they each retreated to nearby mountains, living their lives as hermits. “Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup” translates to a hermit dwelling; Saint Loup Peak was named for one of the princess’ suitors. The three Ravaille brothers now operate the winery, their family having lived in the Languedoc for over 1000 years. The emblem of three fish not only reiterates the story of the three suitors, but also the fraternal bond of the three brothers.

This is the classic trio of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre blended with Cinsault from vines 10-50 years in age. The rose is pressed directly bringing out the beautiful coral tones of the fruit. This can be drunk immediately, though would do very well to revisit after a year in the cellar.

It’s true: wine is good medicine!! La Baronne’s winemaker, Jean Lignères, is still a practicing medical doctor in the small village of Moux. He comes from a large family of doctors, inheriting the role of winemaker for the (now) 90-hectare estate his father purchased in 1957. His wife Anne, along with siblings Paul and Geneviève, run the winery. La Baronne is certified organic and biodynamic. Winemaking practices are gradually shifting away from oak maturation, and using more amphorae and egg-shaped terra cotta vats. Yet, Jean is careful to avoid the oxidative style that is associated with many natural wines.

This a white wine not for the faint of heart. Grenache Blanc, Vermentino, and Roussane come together to create a full-bodied white with texture and salinity, opulent fruit and unusual depth. The wines ferments spontaneously in stainless and ages for just four months. It needs rich oily fish prepared in a Mediterranean mindset.

Clos Figueras, Font De La Figuera Priorat Tinto 2019

The year was 1997. A world-renowned winemaker had just shown Christopher Cannan and his wife, Charlotte, an abandoned vineyard just north of the Gratallops called “Figueres.” That same day, the entire Cannan family piled into their car and followed the winemaker, post-haste, to Barcelona. At a simple café, the Cannan’s purchased the 100-hectare estate. Initially, the terrain of the previously abandoned vineyards had to be prepared for planting. (A nearby grove of century-old olive trees needed to be re-worked as well.) Both undertakings were just the beginning of what would become the Cannan family’s quest. They traveled extensively in their spare time to work under some of the best winemakers in the world. Today, their combination of passion for the property and skill in the cellar sets these wines above the rest.

“Font de la Figuera” means fig tree fountain in the Catalan language, as can be seen on the label. The blend is classic to what the region of Priorat does well. All the fruit is destemmed except for some of the Syrah. The wine goes on to age for 12 months in French oak.

The Ligneres family is bringing much needed attention to the Languedoc of southern France. The story is an unexpected one. Both the husband and wife have a background in medicine, and like many other traditional winemakers have wine running through their veins. Andre is a general practitioner and Suzette is a pharmacist. Together with their children, they manage La Baronne estate. The family is very much hands-on—they utilize dry-farming, hand harvesting, and have been certified organic and biodynamic.

The “Cayreliéres” is Grenache that’s been unfined, unfiltered, and no sulphites have been added. It hails from the plot of the same name located in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France.

Succes Vinicola, Conca de Barbera La Trompa 2021

Variety: Trepat

This winemaking tale happens in the small appellation of Conca de Barbera, located just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic Ocean in the region of Catalunya. A couple that was brought together by their love of wine. Initially the project was facilitated by “Viver de Celleristes,” a winemaking facility that allowed young entrepreneurs space to create their wines. They eventually moved to a more permanent winemaking residence in a garagiste winery. With them being so new to the Conco de Barbera appellation, other local growers assumed the couple did not know what they were doing as they were using organic methods. Mariona and Albert take part in all the work together. The wines are made in a natural manner, which is progressively becoming more and more of a focus in The New Spain.

Trepat is not widely known, though if you’ve ever enjoyed a Cava rosé, you probably enjoyed this core grape variety from northeastern Spain. Succes saw the potential in this lighter-toned, high-altitude red so much so that they’re allowing the Trepat to do the “trumpeting.”

All wine production in Colares runs through this facility, and the bottles wearing the ARC label come by way of Francisco Figueiredo, a young local dedicated to the appellation’s terroir and native grapes. It lies northwest of Lisbon toward the Atlantic, where the vines are wild and the soils are sandy. However, Chão Rijo translates from Portuguese as “hard soil”, as the vineyards on this bottling are made of compact clay. Light, earthy, authentic, and ready to drink.

Domaine d'Aupilhac, Coteaux du Languedoc 'Les Cocalieres' Rouge 2019

The Fadat family has been farming in the lieu dit of Aupilhac back since the 19th century, but it wasn’t until the current generation, Sylvain, saw true potential for the family’s holdings. He painstakingly spent years clearing the boulders in a volcanic amphitheater near the Herault river. This area has perfect southwest exposure for Mediterranean vines like Grenache, Carignan and Roussanne. He, like many vignerons before him, saw the potential in the land around him, and worked nonstop until the vision was a reality.

The single vineyard of ‘Cocalieres' is formed on remains of an ancient volcano turned into a lake, and ultimately a vineyard. The site is a geological gold mine with all sorts of limestone and basalt–a haven for vines. All the fruit is harvested and vinified all at once. It goes on to age in older barrels for 13-14 months.

Variety: Mencia and Caiño

If you were ever hoping for a story of an accidental winemaker, hang tight. Alberto Nanclares and his wife uprooted from their home in the Basque country to the ocean side village of Castrelo. The small home they purchased incidentally came with some vineyards. While Alberto initially had no plans to make wine, the thought of farming nagged at him, and so, a winemaker was born. He invested in winemaking tools, eventually setting up shop in his garage. Conventional farming then turned into organic and biodynamic, an impressive feat for a region prone to viticultural difficulties, even using seaweed from the nearby Atlantic for composting. Alberto is making incredible grower Albariño, as well as other local varieties at incredible value.

While Nanclares is known for their angular style Albarino, this is a lively red made from the local spicy Mencia and blended with other indigenous varieties. Alcohol is 11.5% and is aged like a red Burgundy almost in mostly used barrels.

WINE SHIPPING VIA USPS / UPS

The cost of shipping varies depending on which shipping option the buyer selects, as well as destination and number of bottles. The appropriate shipping rates will be calculated at checkout.

In the case of shipments outside of Ohio, the sole responsibility for complying with local regulations or tax requirements rests with the customer.

It is the purchaser’s responsibility to provide a current, shippable, physical delivery address. In the event a shipment cannot be delivered due to an incorrect address provided by the purchaser, or after three delivery attempts by the carrier, Hart & Cru reserves the right to charge purchaser the applicable carrier fee for rerouting to an alternative address or re-shipping to the same address.
