This is old vine Chardonnay planted way back in 1952. This is a more opulent style of Chardonnay than the other Grand Cru bottlings, which is really saying something because the wines undergo lengthy lees aging, giving this wine a profound texture and weight.

“Les Crayers” means the “big chalk,” openly referring to the hefty presence of chalk in the soil. This wine is aged for four years on the lees. No dosage, or sugar is added making this bone dry and pure. This is the first single vineyard that Marguet began to bottle.

A Prestige Champagne is the first of its kind to be vinified with natural methods and certified organically. The project is a collaboration of four great wine minds-- Benoit Maguet, Benoit Lahayem, Vincent Laval, and David Laclapart. The idea is to craft the highest quality wine using biodynamic methods in Champagne. The base wine spends two years aging on forest selection barrels before the second fermentation. The wine is released after nine years. When this bottle has been blind tasted next to top cru Champagnes including Salon, Krug, and others, it continually achieves the highest ratings blind. With less than 3000 bottles produced it can be hard to come by.

Operating as a consultant, Jestin has influenced both his biodynamic farming and natural wine practices in Marguet’s wine. The wine is sourced from the village of Ambonnay and made into a Brut Nature style. It ages on its lees for nine years before it is released.

Right after WWII, the Egly-Ouriet house was born. Francis Egly’s grandfather married Madame Ouriet with just 3 hectares of land to start from the Grand Cru area of Ambonnay. After taking over from his father, Francis Egly immediately converted the domaine to 100% estate bottling. In the process, he became one of the original pioneers of the grower Champagne movement, growing his name to be one of the top Champagne producers. He organically farms Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, both being 50 years old on average. Francis implements varied barrel aging from 1 to 5 years of age, letting every terroir express itself. Wine writer Peter Liem states, “If there are any Champagnes that fit the often-used description of “Burgundy with bubbles,” Egly-Ouriet would be the leading candidate.”

‘VP’ is all Grand Cru fruit mostly hailing from the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay in the Montagne de Reims. Winemaking is completed in barrels, 10% of which are new. The wine goes on to age on its lees for a mere seven years before release. Vieillissement Prolongé means extended aging.

It doesn’t get much better than this, even coming from a true pioneer of the grower Champagne movement. The Pinot Noir fruit comes from the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay from a single vineyard called “Les Crayeres” devoted to 70 year old vines and intensely chalky soils. Reserve juice is used for this wine, both from 2012 and 2013. The wine is both fermented and aged in barrel, some of which is new. The wine is aged on its lees for 76 months before being released.

A cap on his head and mud on his boots has made us instantly fall in love with Freddie Savart, a jolly former football (soccer) player turned world-class winemaker. Freddie’s wild creativity and experimentation is crafting Champagne that has the entire wine world talking. Savart champions Pinot Noir based Champagnes grown in the mineral rich soils of Montagne de Reims. He’s a force to be reckoned with and celebrates the romance of wine. His wines are for the thrill seekers, the wine geeks, and of course, the Champagne lovers.

Ephemere changes with each vintage; no two wines are the same. This one is a collab with Maison Dremont. The fruit comes from the Grand Cru villages of Ambonnay and Bouzy. The wine is aged for three years on the lees and just 2 grams of dosage is added.

"Les Grandes Crayeres" means the ‘big chalk,’ which this single vineyard of course is “chalk full.” In 2014, the Laherte brothers decided to vinify these vines separately, showcasing the finesse of the Chardonnay, the effect of this soft chalk, and the excellence of the vintage.

This wine draws a hint of its inspiration from Laherte’s “Les 7,” a blend of all seven permitted Champagne varieties, including Petit Meslier. The family was struck by its ability to stand on its own, as usually it would never do so. It has naturally high acidity, a quality of importance in a world where global warming continues to unveil itself. This is blended with 40% reserve wine and aged for six months on its lees in barrels. It is intense and aromatic.

Robert Moncuit, Lieu Dit d'Oger Les Vozemieux 2015

This is another producer we’ve picked up recently that is new to Ohio as well. The Moncuit family isn’t exactly new to the Champagne scene as their family began acquiring land in the Cote de Blancs as far back as 1889. Pierre Amillet spearheads the fourth generation, and he certainly doesn’t hide his affinity for the local chalky soils in the Cote de Blancs from which the Chardonnay grows so well. The family works with vines from the Grand Cru villages of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger, with their most prized parcel from ‘Les Chetillons' which has been in the family for over 70 years.

Blending wine from both 2015 and reserve wine from 2014 brings more attention to the stunning fruit and chalky soils coming from the Cote de Blancs. Just a hint of dosage as well as a bit of barrique aging brings an extra opulence to this wine. This is one of the more remarkable Blanc de Blancs on the market, and the fact that the fruit is all Grand Cru certainly helps.
