      The year was 1997. A world-renowned winemaker had just shown Christopher Cannan and his wife, Charlotte, an abandoned vineyard just north of the Gratallops called “Figueres.” That same day, the entire Cannan family piled into their car and followed the winemaker, post-haste, to Barcelona. At a simple café, the Cannan’s purchased the 100-hectare estate. Initially, the terrain of the previously abandoned vineyards had to be prepared for planting. (A nearby grove of century-old olive trees needed to be re-worked as well.) Both undertakings were just the beginning of what would become the Cannan family’s quest. They traveled extensively in their spare time to work under some of the best winemakers in the world. Today, their combination of passion for the property and skill in the cellar sets these wines above the rest.

      The Serras del Priorat is a younger expression of the Priorat style with a fresh fruitness; the wine is ready to drink, though has age potential for another ten years. This is a fine introduction to Priorat and the rest of Christopher Cannan’s wines.

      This is ultimately old vine Garnacha and Carignan at its best. While the wine is considered opulent and powerful, often the style of Priorat, there is still French finesse and restraint that comes through in both farming and winemaking. Just 50 cases were imported.

      Variety: Garnacha (Grenache) and Carinena (Carignan)

      bottle size: 750ml

      This is a small project done by duo Christopher and Anne Cannan from their Poblets del Monsant winery outside of Priorat. The vermouth is a specialty of the region of the nearby Catalonia. The base is Grenache and Carignan fortified with over 100 aromatic herbs and spices from the nearby mountains. Even though fortified, the wine only approaches 16% alcohol and ages for 18 months in 500 liter casks. This is ideal aperitif wine enjoyed on ice or on its own with an orange slice. Excellent with olives, nuts, or charcuterie. This could also be used in cocktails like the Manhattan, but the vermouth really shines nicely on its own.

      “Font de la Figuera” means fig tree fountain in the Catalan language, as can be seen on the label. The blend is classic to what the region of Priorat does well. All the fruit is destemmed except for some of the Syrah. The wine goes on to age for 12 months in French oak.

      This is Grenache Blanc aged in stainless steel for a pure fresh expression of this variety. While the fruit flavors all verge towards green, there are still secondary characters of floral and herbal that go very well with seafood and light cheeses.

      Variety: Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah

      Brought to you by a couple of the exquisite minds behind Clos Figueras, Anne Cannan—daughter to wine exporter Christopher Cannan, and Miquel Compte, comes this passion project located in Montsant, just outside of Priorat. The vines are sourced from the Pinyana area of Montsant, where Miquel’s family owned vines, a place of rustic beauty with verdant forests covering jagged rocky formations. It is easy to see what inspired this project. Miquel is in charge of viticulture while Anne is in charge of winemaking. Their focus is red and white Grenache from old vines; French in style, but distinctly Montsant.

      This is almost like a baby Priorat red. Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah come together from vines around 40 years in age. Ageing is completed for seven months in French and American oak casks. Paying homage to the style of the region, this Montsant is juicy and minerally.

      This white blend is sourced from 40 year old vines from relatively high altitude. The wine is fermented in both French oak casks and stainless. Grenache Blanc and a touch of Chardonnay come together for a white that has floral, salinity, and a round texture that needs food.

      Variety: Viognier, Grenache Blanc, and Chenin Blanc

      The year was 1997. A world-renowned winemaker had just shown Christopher Cannan and his wife, Charlotte, an abandoned vineyard just north of the Gratallops called “Figueres.” That same day, the entire Cannan family piled into their car and followed the winemaker, post-haste, to Barcelona. At a simple café, the Cannan’s purchased the 100-hectare estate. Initially, the terrain of the previously abandoned vineyards had to be prepared for planting. (A nearby grove of century-old olive trees needed to be re-worked as well.) Both undertakings were just the beginning of what would become the Cannan family’s quest. They traveled extensively in their spare time to work under some of the best winemakers in the world. Today, their combination of passion for the property and skill in the cellar sets these wines above the rest.

      While Priorat might be known for its red wines, it certainly has just as much potential to put out many captivating white wines. This wine evokes the high altitude of Priorat and the Mediterranean climate found in Priorat. The Viognier undergoes a gentle maceration on its skins. The fermentation begins in both stainless steel and French oak, then ages in steel.
